Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times best selling true story of an unlikely friendship forged between a woman and the man she incorrectly identified as her rapist and sent to prison for 11 years. Jennifer Thompson was raped at knifepoint by a man who broke into her apartment while she slept. She was able to escape, and eventually positively identified Ronald Cotton as her attacker. Ronald insisted that she was mistaken-- but Jennifer's positive identification was the compelling evidence that put him behind bars. After eleven years, Ronald was allowed to take a DNA test that proved his innocence. He was released, after serving more than a decade in prison for a crime he never committed. Two years later, Jennifer and Ronald met face to face-- and forged an unlikely friendship that changed both of their lives. With Picking Cotton, Jennifer and Ronald tell in their own words the harrowing details of their tragedy, and challenge our ideas of memory and judgment while demonstrating the profound nature of human grace and the healing power of forgiveness.

We may imagine that science is a process of breakthroughs and light bulb moments. But in reality, science goes wrong 99% of the time. Almost every idea a scientist comes up with is quickly disproved by a failed experiment or rival research. Science moves at a rate of inches per decade and we often like it that way. But occasionally, just occasionally, a complete fluke happens and changes everything as we know it. From an untimely sneeze in a petri dish leading to the groundbreaking creation of antibiotics, to the incredible discovery of microwaves via melted chocolate, Accidental is a rip-roaring adventure through science gone wrong, and accidentally changing humanity for the better.

There she meets an Australian who is unlike any male she has met before. But it is not long before Rhea uncovers in Reiner the same insecurities as the English males of her past. In the end she leaves him, stoned and dancing around a self-immolating backpacker on a beach in Southern India, and travels on to join her best friend Belinda in Australia. There Rhea completes a novel she has begun to find during her travels through India, in which a young member of the resistance in the Third World War, Michael teams up with the punk Bozzo and heroin addict Sheena to plan a revelation to the world of a multinational corporate plot in collusion with global government. In the process, the hapless Michael discovers that the story he thought he was in is about as far from the centre of the narrative as he could have imagined.

Book Loyalist to a Fault

Download or read book Loyalist to a Fault written by Evan Munday and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: October Schwartz and her five deadest pals are back for another crime-solving caper When October Schwartz raises her five dead friends to investigate the cause of Cyril Cooper's death way back in 1783, she expects a dull research-based journey into the lives of Canada's earliest British settlers, the United Empire Loyalists. You'd think our favourite teen detective would have the hang of this solving-mysteries thing by now, but when a ghost pirate appears on the scene, October may be in over her head. The ghost pirate — or someone in a very convincing costume — is thieving key evidence at every turn, beating October to the goods time and again. Worst of all, Valentine's Day is looming, and October's friends seem more concerned about secret admirers than secret conspiracies. As October digs deeper into the mystery, she starts to suspect the pirate may be someone very close to her, just as she uncovers facts regarding her long-missing mom and the meaning behind a cryptic message from a past case. The Dead Kid Detective Agency's third quest is a veritable bouquet of misadventures that weaves the American Revolution, a beyond-chaotic school dance, a historic sea vessel, and a boatload of supernatural shenanigans into one unforgettable madcap adventure.

Landos - a bustling, developing (slowly) city of chancers, lunatics, thieves and utter stupidity... and that's just the coppers! Book One - SVELT: Are you ready to join an unlikely hero on an unexpected quest? While in the city taking a break from work on the farm, Svelt 'inherits' a strange map from a dying wizard and, with the vague clues as his only guide, begins the seemingly impossible task of searching for the mysterious artefact. Although he is oblivious to the 'help' from a mischievous, ancient time-traveller, some believe it should not be found. Finding himself was the original objective, but Svelt soon learns that being the centre of attention in Landos is not conducive to growing old... especially for a dwarf troll. Book Two - EVENTFUL TIMES: An astronomical anomaly causes widespread panic! The wizards turn to brandy... and eventually, when the threat becomes impossible to ignore (even by wizard thresholds), someone has the good sense to ask for practical help. But is perennial tinkerer Albert Sonny ready for such a challenge? Book Three - THE Nth HORSEMAN: Landos is under attack again! This time, a long-forgotten winged menace terrorises the citizens. With rewards on offer, the ever-resourceful opportunists offer their dubious services, yet, even a professional slayer meets his match with this beast - unprecedented in the entire history of dragon lore... not to mention mathematics. A specialist horseman of the twilight is summoned to guide victims in the unorthodox aftermath - his steed not being particularly fond of sugar lumps, and noticeably lacking in the limb department. Book Four - LAWFUL TIMES: With no heir to the throne of Merewood, the elves are divided in their choice of successor. Merith, a loyal friend of the late king, believes his son, Thaldyr, has more right to rule than most, but others remember a different bloodline. The great forest of Merewood has not seen a queen - a jewel - rule for centuries, but does the lost jewel of Merewood even exist? Both parties believe that she does, and with a vague idea of where she resides, both intend to find her first... for very different reasons. Meanwhile, in the bustling city of Landos, a travelling con man returns, fresh from escaping the merciless grasp of King Louis de-Cap - Garlician monarch and lover of all things painful to those that aren't... him. The prodigal son soon formulates a plan to turn the city's archaic law system on its head. On the outskirts, in their strange little blithering bohemia, the wizards... are being wizards... Oh, to live in truly Lawful Times.

Book It Came from Something Awful

Download or read book It Came from Something Awful written by Dale Beran and published by All Points Books. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How 4chan and 8chan fuel white nationalism, inspire violence, and infect politics. The internet has transformed the ways we think and act, and by consequence, our politics. The most impactful recent political movements on the far left and right started with massive online collectives of teenagers. Strangely, both movements began on the same website: an anime imageboard called 4chan.org. It Came from Something Awful is the fascinating and bizarre story of sites like 4chan and 8chan and their profound effect on youth counterculture. Dale Beran has observed the anonymous messageboard community's shifting activities and interests since the beginning. Sites like 4chan and 8chan are microcosms of the internet itself—simultaneously at the vanguard of contemporary culture, politics, comedy and language, and a new low for all of the above. They were the original meme machines, mostly frequented by socially awkward and disenfranchised young men in search of a place to be alone together. During the recession of the late 2000’s, the memes became political. 4chan was the online hub of a leftist hacker collective known as Anonymous and a prominent supporter of the Occupy Wall Street movement. But within a few short years, the site’s ideology spun on its axis; it became the birthplace and breeding ground of the alt-right. In It Came from Something Awful, Beran uses his insider’s knowledge and natural storytelling ability to chronicle 4chan's strange journey from creating rage-comics to inciting riots to—according to some—memeing Donald Trump into the White House.

Book Nietzsche on the Decadence and Flourishing of Culture

Download or read book Nietzsche on the Decadence and Flourishing of Culture written by Andrew Huddleston and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-02 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Nietzsche's first book The Birth of Tragedy (1872), cultural renewal is paramount among his concerns. In the person of Richard Wagner, Nietzsche saw someone who might bring together a fragmented and directionless modern society through the creation of tragic festival that, through its mythic content, would allegedly give renewed meaning and purpose to human life. The standard story about Nietzsche's philosophical development is that he becomes disillusioned with this project and his mature philosophy undergoes a radical shift. Instead of reposing his hopes in a broader culture, he comes to occupy himself instead with the fate of a few great individuals, or, at the extreme, perhaps mainly with his own quasi-artistic self-cultivation. On these readings, to the extent that he remains concerned with culture at all, it is only as something whose noxious influence threatens this cadre of elite individuals. Nietzsche on the Decadence and Flourishing of Culture questions this individualist reading that has become prevalent, and develops an alternative interpretation of Nietzsche as a more social thinker who sees collective cultural achievements as no less important. Great individuals are not all that matter. Andrew Huddleston uses Nietzsche's perfectionistic ideal of a flourishing culture and his diagnostics of cultural malaise as a point of departure for reconsidering many of the central themes in Nietzsche's ethics and social philosophy, as well as for understanding the interconnections with the form of cultural criticism that was part and parcel of his distinctive philosophical enterprise.
