Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This resource produces the first comprehensive history of the state’s federal courts from the inception of the Mississippi Territory to the late twentieth century. Using archival material and legal documents, David M. Hargrove untangles the state’s complex legal history, which includes slavery and secession, the Civil War and Reconstruction, Jim Crow and civil rights. In this important overview of the United States courts in Mississippi, Hargrove surveys the state’s federal judiciary as it rules on key issues in Mississippi’s past. He examines the court as it mediates conflict between regional and national agendas as well as protects constitutional rights of the state’s African American citizens during the Reconstruction and civil rights eras. Hargrove traces how political activities of the state’s federal judges affected public perceptions of an independent judiciary. Growing demands for federal judicial and law enforcement infrastructure, he notes, called for courthouses that remain iconic presences in the state’s largest cities. Hargrove presents detailed judicial biographies of judges who shaped Mississippi’s federal bench. Commissioned by the state’s federal judiciary to write the book, he offers balanced perspectives on jurists whose reputations have suffered in hindsight, while illuminating the achievements of those who have received little public recognition.

Book Civil War Suits in the U S Court of Claims

Download or read book Civil War Suits in the U S Court of Claims written by Greg H. Williams and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-10-14 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not long after the eruption of civil war, the United States found itself mired in claims against the government. Loyal citizens living in insurrectionary districts complained about property seizure. Military pay disputes abounded, and some of the army's attempts at procurement were called into question. Charged with resolving these cases was the United States Court of Claims. Originally set up to advise Congress on pension matters, by 1863 the newly expanded court was the chief body dealing with claims resulting from the war. The entries in this book present the particulars of the Civil War cases heard by the United States Court of Claims. Cases include disputed contracts; pay disputes; compensation for use of property or property lost, destroyed or damaged; and quartermaster or paymaster money stolen, captured, or lost. Suits filed by loyal states to recover war expenses are also listed. Appendices include 1860 census data, military regulations regarding pay and expenditures, relevant acts of Congress and other documents, and information about the 1864 Kentucky Draft Case claimants.

Book Marketing the Frontier in the Northwest Territory

Download or read book Marketing the Frontier in the Northwest Territory written by Robert E. Mitchell and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-05-18 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining narrative history with data-rich social and economic analysis, this new institutional economics study examines the failure of frontier farms in the antebellum Northwest Territory, where legislatively-created imperfect markets and poor surveying resulted in massive investment losses for both individual farmers and the national economy. The history of farming and spatial settlement patterns in the Great Lakes region is described, with specific focus on the State of Michigan viewed through a case study of Midland County. Inter and intra-state differences in soil endowments, public and private promoters of site-specific investment opportunities, time trends in settled populations and the experiences of individual investors are covered in detail.
