Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Spinning, Vol. 1: Including All Processes Up to the End of Carding The: following pages, which formed originally a series of articles in The Textile Mercury, have been written with the avowed intention of supplying to the students of our technical schools the means of gratifying what is nu doubtedly a growing desire for the acquisition of know ledge on the subject of cotton spinning. Whilst as a nation we are. In a position in many respects to maintain an industrial supremacy, yet it cannot be denied that at present we are passing through a very severe crisis, and unless something is done to keep apace of the enormous strides other countries are taking, and which enable them to compete successfully with our own products, we shall find ourselves lagging behind and losing the advantages we have hitherto possessed. Book Cotton Spinning

Download or read book Cotton Spinning written by Thomas Thornley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Spinning: First Year Following on the same lines, another most impor tant development took place some four years ago in the splitting up of cotton spinning and cotton weaving each into three stages. Speaking now of cotton spinning alone, a first year student under existing arrangements is only taken to the end of the carding eug1ne, and a second year student is only taken to the end of the actual spinning process. There 1s evidently a very wide contrast between the course of study of a first year student ln cotton spinning at the present time, and that of a similar student pr1or to 1889. In passing, the author may express it as his own individual opinion that some time in the near future the accredited authorities may possibly see their way to extend the scheme of study, so that textile diplomas or degrees may be granted. Quite recently a step in the right direction has been taken by the appointment of Mr. John Crompton to be Inspector of Cotton Spinning and Weaving Classes under the City and Guilds of London Institute. Mr. Crompton is the present Examiner for Cotton Weaving, and acted personally as a leading teacher of weaving for many years. Occupying also an important position in the industry he is in close touch and sympathy with the movement. Book Cotton Spinning Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cotton Spinning Classic Reprint written by A. S. Wade and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Spinning In all the publications the purely technical aspects Of the industry were not dealt with. Except where essential, there being at all times a full supply of technical works 'on cotton subjects for those engaged in carrying on the industry. My aim was and is to present views of a great industry in such a way as to bring home to the general reader the preponderating position amongst the manufacturing nations of the world held by the British Cotton Industry, and at the same time to describe the industry as a whole in a way that does not come within the scope Of a treatise Of a technical character. The volume, written by Mr. A. S. Wade, deals with this Wider View of the cotton industry. In his interesting 'survey he very rightly does not forget either the romance, the vastness, or the intricacy Of his subject. It is a book which should be read widely, for it seems to me to fill a gap in cotton industry literature and contains the most recently published statistics. My hope is that other industries, through this valuable series Of books, may be treated with equal efficiency. Download or read book Cotton Spinning Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by William Scott Taggart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Spinning, Vol. 3 IN the two previous volumes the preparing processes in cotton spinning have been fully treated. In this volume the subject of spinning and the preparation of yarns is treated in an equally exhaustive manner, with, I trust, an avoidance of some defects that existed in the earlier books. In a work of this kind, which covers so much ground and deals with many features upon which other men have written, it is perhaps unnecessary to suggest that originality is a difficult matter to obtain in one's treatment of the subject. In my efforts to do so I may have, occasionally but unconsciously, adopted similar methods of other writers 5 when such has been pointed out to me I have tried, and I hope successfully, to prevent this being an offence, and I sincerely trust that readers and writers alike will find in my efforts a desire to simply present the study of cotton spinning in an interesting and instructive manner, so that it may prove of value to those whose well-being is dependent on the success of that part of the industry it represents.
