Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Mill Machinery Calculations: A Complete, Comprehensive and Practical Treatment of All Necessary Calculation on Cotton Carding and Spinning Machines This book is intended to fill what, to the Author, has been a long-felt want, that is, a book that would give the practical calculations that are needed in running a cotton mill, from pickers to looms, in a simple, straight-forward manner, so as to be easily understood and mastered by any one who understands simple arithmetic. It is, in great part, a reprint of a series of articles that were written for and printed by "Cotton" during the years 1911 and 1912, being entirely revised and somewhat enlarged, with the addition of numerous tables scattered throughout its length, and covering practically all the calculations, simple and otherwise, that any one would ever need in handling a modem mill. Wherever possible, long tedious descriptions of individual mechanisms, peculiar to some one make or type of machine, have been omitted, as this was not the object in writing the book, but no pains have been spared to make the calculations complete yet simple and easily understood. As will be noticed, the tables occurring at the end of the different chapters of the book, are mostly taken from the catalogues of some of the cotton mill machine builders and the Author wishes here to express his appreciation of their kindness in allowing the use of such tables. Criticisms of this work, made in a spirit of friendliness, will be gladly received, as it is almost impossible to prevent the occurrence of a few mistakes. With the above remarks, the work is submitted for the approval of the public and with the hope that it will be the means of bringing a more thorough understanding of the calculations used in the mill to some who have found them a little puzzling. Under these circumstances the reader may easily imagine that, the only chance left for a new author, is to depreciate the value of those works, to all intents and purposes, and set about exalting his own with equal assurance. Such, however, shall not be the case in the present instance; indeed, it would be folly to speak disparagingly concerning the labours of others on this subject. The strongest apology, if apology was necessary, arises from the fact of the rapid and continual progress, as well as increase of machinery, which must. Necessarily have a tendency to increase the demand for productions of this kind, were they even entirely devoid of originality. The next. Reason is, that although the body of the work may contain calculations analogous to those of most other works, yet the reader, on looking over these pages, will find examples of calculations which he will not recognise as being already threadbare. Believing that, along aith the advancement of the age in general literature, there is also an increased thirst, in factory operatives, after the required knowledge in their respective departments, - which knowledge better enables them to discharge the responsibilities of their several situations. I have endeavoured to respond to this desire from my own conviction, as well as at the solicitation of several friends, who owned with me that there was yet more room, both in the field and the market, provided the commodity was cultivated to the taste, and brought within the reach of all. The work, such as it is, without further ceremony, I now offer to the public, whose praise or censure is the great ordeal of every undertaking, from the smallest to the largest. Each term represents a certain length of yarn for a fixed' weight, or vice versa; but unfortunately there are difierent standards of weights and measures, which result in a great deal of confusion, although this is less in the cotton industry than in others. The largest variety of terms is found in the woolen industry. In the United States we have woolen cut, run, grain, etc., when all may be reduced to a common basis. There is no doubt that the adoption of an international standard would benefit the textile industry, but which standard to adopt is a question on which manufacturers disagree. It is necessary to familiarize oneself With the standard numbers of the various yarns; also, as in the case of woolen yarns, where different standard numbers are used for the various terms, it is well to be familiar with the standard number of each term, as by this means a great deal of confusion will be avoided.
