Book Gandhi s Spinning Wheel and the Making of India

Download or read book Gandhi s Spinning Wheel and the Making of India written by Rebecca Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-03 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gandhi’s use of the spinning wheel was one of the most significant unifying elements of the nationalist movement in India. Spinning was seen as an economic and political activity that could bring together the diverse population of South Asia, and allow the formerly elite nationalist movement to connect to the broader Indian population. This book looks at the politics of spinning both as a visual symbol and as a symbolic practice. It traces the genealogy of spinning from its early colonial manifestations in Company painting to its appropriation by the anti-colonial movement. This complex of visual imagery and performative ritual had the potential to overcome labour, gender, and religious divisions and thereby produce an accessible and effective symbol for the Gandhian anti-colonial movement. By thoroughly examining all aspects of this symbol’s deployment, this book unpacks the politics of the spinning wheel and provides a model for the analysis of political symbols elsewhere. It also probes the successes of India’s particular anti-colonial movement, making an invaluable contribution to studies in social and cultural history, as well as South Asian Studies.

  • ISBN : 1326870777
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book The Indian Hundi written by James F Frayne and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hundis refer to financial instruments which evolved on the Indian sub-continent and appear to have been in use there from at least the sixteenth century. They were used in trade and credit transactions and, as such, were used as remittance instruments for the purpose of transfer of funds from one place to another. In the days of the Princely States and the British Raj these hundis served as Travellers Cheques. What makes hundis so interesting is the sheer variety of them and the uses to which they were put. As a safety precaution, moreover, they were usually written in an elaborate script which only bankers knew how to read and write. They are still used in India today, even though the resources of modern banking are available for most commercial transactions.

Book Modern Indian Political Thought

Download or read book Modern Indian Political Thought written by Bidyut Chakrabarty and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an unconventional articulation of the political thinking in India in a refreshingly creative manner in more than one way. Empirically, the book becomes innovative by providing an analytically more grasping contextual interpretation of Indian political thought that evolved during the nationalist struggle against colonialism. Insightfully, it attempts to unearth the hitherto unexplored yet vital subaltern strands of political thinking in India as manifested through the mode of numerous significant socio-economic movements operating side by side and sometimes as part of the mainstream nationalist movement. This book articulates the main currents of Indian political thought by locating the text and themes of the thinkers within the socio-economic and politico-cultural contexts in which such ideas were conceptualised and articulated. The book also tries to analytically grasp the influences of the various British constitutional devices that appeared as the responses of the colonial government to redress the genuine socio-economic grievances of the various sections of Indian society. The book breaks new ground in not only articulating the main currents of Indian political thought in an analytically more sound approach of context-driven discussion but also provokes new research in the field by charting a new course in grasping and articulating the political thought in India. This volume will be useful to the students, researchers and faculty working in the fields of political science, political sociology, political economy and post-colonial contemporary Indian politics in particular. It will also be an invaluable and interesting reading for those interested in South Asian studies.

Download or read book A Frayed History written by Meena Menon and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once the envy of the world for its quality and variety, Indian cotton today is mired in uncertainty and despair. Though India is the largest producer of cotton, its farmers are trapped in debt, and thousands choose to kill themselves than face an ignominious fate. Handloom weavers, once proud standard-bearers of the country's artisanal heritage, are barely able to scrape together a living. To make matters worse, there is the back-breaking competition with artificial fibres. Meena Menon and Uzramma take us through the fascinating history of cotton in India, examining its illustrious origins, its blood-stained colonial heritage, and the events that led to its current crisis. Amid the bleakness, the authors suggest a silver lining: reviving indigenous cotton—and the handloom industry that spun its fame. Through painstaking research, Menon and Uzramma show that with the right combination of friendly policies and championing the Indian cotton brand, it is possible to restore the fabric's past glory. This is an important book not just for lovers of cotton but anyone concerned with the struggles of Indian agriculture in a brutal, fast-changing market.
