This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Growing for Rural Schools Cotton cloth has been found in the ancient tombs of the Incas of Peru about the year of 1522. The poetic writers of the Orient called the cloth webs of woven wind. From 1500 B. C. Until an equal number of years after the begin ning of the Christian Era, India was the center of the cotton indus try. From India it was introduced into China and Japan, and rapidly spread over Arabia, Africa and Egypt. History states that cotton was growing on the American continent at the time of its discovery by Columbus, and that the first efforts to grow cotton in the United States were made in Virginia about the year 1621. In 1764 eight small bags of cotton were exported to Liverpool from the United States. The separation of the seed from the lint was a Herculean task, the work being done by hand, four pounds of lint cotton per week being the task required from each head of a family, in addition to the usual field work. At this rate it required one individual a little more than two years to remove the seed from a bale. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Farm Practice in the Cultivation of Cotton Classic Reprint

Download or read book Farm Practice in the Cultivation of Cotton Classic Reprint written by Henry Roy Cates and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Practice in the Cultivation of Cotton In this division, especially in Mississippi, the farms are very large and are operated by the tenant system. Usually the owner lives in a near - by town or village and visits the farm only occasionally to direct the work. A hired superintendent lives on the farm and has direct control of it and the supervision of the tenants. The soils in the Delta areas are very fertile, and little commercial fertilizer is used. Average crop yields are higher than in any other area studied. More tillage after planting is given cotton in this area than in the other regions surveyed. This is due largely to the fact that many of the fields are infested with nut-grass, and to control it extra tillage is required. The South Atlantic division is composed of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. In this division eight sur veys were made. The farms are of medium size and are largely oper ated by the tenant system, but under the direct supervision of the own ers. The prevailing system is to furnish each tenant with a mule and 20 or 25 acres of land, the greater part of which is planted to cotton Cotton is the most profitable crop in this area, and one reason for a 1 - horse tenant system is that when each tenant has only a l - horse crop he grows all the cotton he and his family can pick. With a 2-horse crop the tenant could not Increase his cotton acreage because of scarcity of labor for harvesting, so he would necessarily grow other crops, such as corn or oats; consequently a larger percentage of the land is cultivated in cotton by the l-horse tenant system, with a relatively larger return for the landowner. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE BANCROFT PRIZE • A Pulitzer Prize finalist that's as unsettling as it is enlightening: a book that brilliantly weaves together the story of cotton with how the present global world came to exist. “Masterly … An astonishing achievement.” —The New York Times The empire of cotton was, from the beginning, a fulcrum of constant global struggle between slaves and planters, merchants and statesmen, workers and factory owners. Sven Beckert makes clear how these forces ushered in the world of modern capitalism, including the vast wealth and disturbing inequalities that are with us today. In a remarkably brief period, European entrepreneurs and powerful politicians recast the world’s most significant manufacturing industry, combining imperial expansion and slave labor with new machines and wage workers to make and remake global capitalism.

Book Black Reconstruction in America The Oxford W E B Du Bois

Download or read book Black Reconstruction in America The Oxford W E B Du Bois written by W. E. B. Du Bois and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 1134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. E. B. Du Bois was a public intellectual, sociologist, and activist on behalf of the African American community. He profoundly shaped black political culture in the United States through his founding role in the NAACP, as well as internationally through the Pan-African movement. Du Bois's sociological and historical research on African-American communities and culture broke ground in many areas, including the history of the post-Civil War Reconstruction period. Du Bois was also a prolific author of novels, autobiographical accounts, innumerable editorials and journalistic pieces, and several works of history. Black Reconstruction in America tells and interprets the story of the twenty years of Reconstruction from the point of view of newly liberated African Americans. Though lambasted by critics at the time of its publication in 1935, Black Reconstruction has only grown in historical and literary importance. In the 1960s it joined the canon of the most influential revisionist historical works. Its greatest achievement is weaving a credible, lyrical historical narrative of the hostile and politically fraught years of 1860-1880 with a powerful critical analysis of the harmful effects of democracy, including Jim Crow laws and other injustices. With a series introduction by editor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and an introduction by David Levering Lewis, this edition is essential for anyone interested in African American history.

Download or read book Cotton Tenants written by James Agee and published by Melville House. This book was released on 2013-06-04 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A re-discovered masterpiece of reporting by a literary icon and a celebrated photographer In 1941, James Agee and Walker Evans published Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, a 400-page prose symphony about three tenant farming families in Hale County, Alabama, at the height of the Great Depression. The book shattered journalistic and literary conventions. Critic Lionel Trilling called it the “most realistic and most important moral effort of our American generation.” The origins of Agee and Evans’s famous collaboration date back to an assignment for Fortune magazine, which sent them to Alabama in the summer of 1936 to report a story that was never published. Some have assumed that Fortune’s editors shelved the story because of the unconventional style that marked Famous Men, and for years the original report was presumed lost. But fifty years after Agee’s death, a trove of his manuscripts turned out to include a typescript labeled “Cotton Tenants.” Once examined, the pages made it clear that Agee had in fact written a masterly, 30,000-word report for Fortune. Published here for the first time, and accompanied by thirty of Walker Evans’s historic photos, Cotton Tenants is an eloquent report of three families struggling through desperate times. Indeed, Agee’s dispatch remains relevant as one of the most honest explorations of poverty in America ever attempted and as a foundational document of long-form reporting. As the novelist Adam Haslett writes in an introduction, it is “a poet’s brief for the prosecution of economic and social injustice.”
