Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Combing Machines There can he no doubt that the Heilmann Comber has exercised a most important influence upon the spinning of fine cotton yarns, and high-class yarns of lower numbers, during the fifty years of its existence. It would appear that Heilmann, of Muhlhausen, had so perfected his comber as to make it a practical success, a short time before the great London Exhibition of 1851, and it there attracted a considerable amount of attention on the part of spinners and machine makers. Many of these gentlemen were so favourably impressed with Heilmann's Comber that, amongst them, an important syndicate was formed, and the patent rights of the comber were purchased by this syndicate. For many years the eminent firm of Messrs. Hetherington, of Manchester, exercised the sole privilege of making the cotton comber, and by this firm it was brought to a high degree of perfection. At the expiration of the patent rights the eminent cotton machine making firms of Messrs. Dobson & Barlow, of Bolton, and Messrs. Platt Brothers, of Oldham, also took up the manufacture of the Heilmann Cotton Comber, and both these firms have vastly aided in perfecting its constructional details. Messrs. Asa Lees & Co., of Oldham, have also quite recently begun to manufacture the Heilmann Single Nip Comber, along with the Sliver and Ribbon Lap Machines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Carding, Vol. 1: Cotton Cards Carding is really a combing or brushing action, the fibers being operated on by a series of wire teeth, which has the same effect as loosely holding a few fibers at a time and striking them with a comb; the process, however, must not be confused with that technically known as combing, which is an entirely separate process and used only in the manufac ture of fine yarns. The machine employed in carding is usually spoken Of as a card, or sometimes as a carding engine; this latter name, however, is used more commonly in England than in the United States. Book Manson Machine Works

Download or read book Manson Machine Works written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manson Machine Works: Taunton, Mass, Cotton Mill Machinery, Cards, Drawing, Combers, Spinning, Mules, Looms Several years ago I published a book called "Loom-Fixing and Weaving," which treated the subject in a thoroughly practical manner. This book has been very favorably received, and the second edition is now almost exhausted. From time to time I have received many inquiries for a book on carding and spinning, written on the same general lines, but no such book could be found. To fill this demand, the present work has been written, and if by simply being read it imparts information which has been acquired by many years experience, the object of the writer has been attained. Believing that no one man possesses all of the knowledge available on the subject, I have had assistance from some of the best mill men in the country, among whom are Mr. Eben Willey, Allenton, R. I., and Mr. H. D. Martin, Fall River, Mass. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
