Book The Company Store

Download or read book The Company Store written by John Mellor and published by Goodread Biography. This book was released on 1984 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. B. McLachlan was a fiery, idealistic Scot who came to Canada with a vision of a better world. He settled in Cape Breton, and there he worked in the coalmines beside hundreds of men and boys from all parts of the world. In the first decades of the twentieth century mine owners cared little for safety or working conditions: miners and their families were virtual serfs of the company. As their wages were squeezed lower, mine workers fought back through their union--with J. B. McLachlan at its head. The response of the authorities was fierce. The miners faced soldiers, machine guns, prison sentences, starvation, homelessness. They were betrayed by American union leaders. Throughout, J. B. McLachlan stood firm for his principles and ideals. The Company Store is the story of a remarkable Canadian, and of a little-known part of our industrial past.

Book News Around Westminster 1888 1909

Download or read book News Around Westminster 1888 1909 written by John Ashton Hester and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Keowee Courier always had a Westminster correspondent who would write a column each week reporting the goings-on in the town. This book contains selected items from those columns during the years 1888-1909. The reader can follow the development of the town, as wooden buildings gave way to brick buildings, horse-or-mule-drawn wagons and buggies gave way to automobiles--the first of which drove through town in 1902, stores began using gasoline engines to generate electric lighting, and industrial development included a shuttle and bobbin factory, a cotton mill, and a knitting mill. The school and churches were centers of activities. The economy largely depended on the cotton crop. Too much or too little rain could be devastating. Too much cotton on the market brought a lower price. Fortunately, the boll weevil had not yet arrived. . .This book will give the reader insight into what day-to-day life was like in Westminster during the town's early years.

Book Flowering of the Cumberland

Download or read book Flowering of the Cumberland written by Harriette Simpson Arnow and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harriette Arnow’s search for truth as early American settlers knew it began as a child—the old songs, handed-down stories, and proverbs that colored her world compelled her on a journey that informs her depiction of the Cumberland River Valley in Kentucky and Tennessee. Arnow drew from court records, wills, inventories, early newspapers, and unpublished manuscripts to write Seedtime on the Cumberland, which chronicles the movement of settlers away from the coast, as well as their continual refinement of the “art of pioneering.” A companion piece, this evocative history covers the same era, 1780–1803, from the first settlement in what was known as “Middle Tennessee” to the Louisiana Purchase. When Middle Tennessee was the American frontier, the men and women who settled there struggled for survival, land, and human dignity. The society they built in their new home reflected these accomplishments, vulnerabilities, and ambitions, at a time when America was experiencing great political, industrial, and social upheaval.

Book excerpt: McKinneys very first settlers began arriving from Kentucky, Arkansas, and Tennessee in the early 1840s. Collin County was created by the Texas legislature on April 3, 1846, and due to a provision violation requiring the county seat to be within 3 miles of the center of the county, McKinney replaced Buckner as the seat in 1848. The vote deciding the new seat, however, went in McKinneys favor primarily because flooding kept many citizens from casting ballots. On March 16, 1848, the state legislature passed an act to name the new town in honor of Collin McKinney, one of five original draftees of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Today McKinney is one of Americas fastest growing cities and has seen a population boom from approximately 16,000 residents in 1985 to more than 120,000 in 2010.

Book Mean Things Happening in this Land

Download or read book Mean Things Happening in this Land written by H. L. Mitchell and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare firsthand chronicle of one of the most racially progressive unions in twentieth-century America When, during the Great Depression, tenant farmers and sharecroppers were pushed off the land they had worked but never owned, many sought power in numbers by organizing unions. In 1934, seven black men and eleven white men organized the Southern Tenant Farmers Union. Socialist Harry Leland Mitchell was one of those men. Mean Things Happening in This Land is his autobiographical account of SFTU struggles—against poverty, New Deal agencies, communists, and above all, the southern planter class—to achieve economic justice in the cotton fields. In addition to its original foreword, by renowned socialist intellectual Michael Harrington, this edition contains a new preface by Samuel Mitchell and the author’s posthumous corrections and additions.
