Download or read book Cotton and Cotton Manufactures in the United States Classic Reprint written by Edward Atkinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton and Cotton Manufactures in the United States So mills go on half-time to diminish product. Half a product will yield a profit, while the whole product, by overstocking the market, would be sold at a loss. When the markets of the world can be commanded, there can be no sudden piling up, because the area of distribution is too broad to be suddenly overstocked. Business becomes more steady with surer profits. A man engaged in a business, the products of which are used only at home, is as much interested in the question of foreign markets as the one who trades directly abroad. The labor, or producing power, of a country, is wonderfully connected. It is like water in a great reservoir. Water drawn from any point affects the level of the whole. All labor, in a country, that finds a market in foreign lands, removes so much competition from those whose products are consumed at home. When for eign markets are shut off, all home markets have sharp compe tition from increase of laborers on the home-consumed products. Every yard of textile fabric sent out of the country gives a better market and better price for every yard sold in the coun try. Labor by the influence of the wide market is more certain of employment, and is better paid: so it matters little, consider ing the interests of the country as a whole, what Specific article is sent abroad; it represents so much material removed from competition with products. That are sold at home. By the stimulus of foreign markets, also, labor is turned into the best channels, into the channels where we can produce most at least cost. Download or read book The Cotton Manufacturing Industry of the United States written by Melvin Thomas Copeland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cotton Manufacturing Industry of the United States: Awarded the David A. Wells Prize for the Year 1911-12 and Published From the Income of David A. Wells Fund The work has necessarily been restricted at several points. The early history is not given more space because, for the pur poses oi this study, it has seemed advisable to concentrate upon the later period. A history of wages in American cotton mills has not been undertaken because of the vast amount of time that would be required to secure the data on which to base any reliable conclusions. In the second part very little is said con cerning the European lace industry, because of its complicated character and the small size of our own lace manufacture. Finally, but slight reference has been made to the social condi tions under which the Operatives live, and no attempt has been made to compare cost Of living in the different countries. The object has been to secure unity, and by no means to imply that the question of laborers' welfare or standard of living is less worthy Of investigation. Nor is this change confined to those actually em ployed in the business, but extends to the habits, occupation, and condition Of a great proportion Of the population. Download or read book The Cotton Centennial 1790 1890 written by Robert Grieve and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cotton Centennial, 1790-1890: Cotton and Its Uses, the Inception and Development of the Cotton Industries of America, and a Full Account of the Pawtucket Cotton Centenary Celebration In tracing the relation of events, it was found necessary, in connection with an extended account of the Centenary Celebration, to give a short sketch of the history of Pawtucket, the growth of its industries. And its present condition and future prospects. Following along naturally, the rest of Rhode Island claimed attention, since here the industry originally centered, and has since always continued prominent, while the chief city, Providence, owes its develop ment to the manufacture. The great cotton manufacturing centres throughout New England then came in for mention, and in conclusion a sketch of the progress of the industry throughout the country is presented. The first four chapters and the last three, with the exception of portions of chapters three and nine, and the descriptive notices at the end of chapters eight and nine, were written by Mr. Robert Grieve, of Providence. The fifth, sixth and seventh chapters, a considerable part of the eighth and a portion of the third, were written and com piled by Mr. John P. Fernald, of Boston, who also wrote nearly all the descriptive notices of industries at the end of the various chapters. This book was released on 2017-01-21 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Year Book of the National Association of Cotton Manufacturers, 1930 The increased size of the Year Book in recent years and the steadily mounting cost Of preparation and publication made it seem advisable to the Board of Government to change the policy of the Association and allow a limited amount of advertising material to be used to defray partially the cost. In this way, it has been possible to retain prao tically all Of the subject matter of former years. Although the number of pages is somewhat less in this edition, this was accomplished by combining tables into what we believed to be more usable form, rather than through the elimination of material. Any comments you may have to make on the new arrangement or any suggestions you have which will make the book more valuable are earnestly solicited. Book The Movement of Wages in the Cotton Manufacturing Industry of New England Since 1860 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Movement of Wages in the Cotton Manufacturing Industry of New England Since 1860 There has been no attempt made here to study, with a thoroughness exceeding that already applied by students of economic and industrial history, the history of the labor supply in the New England cotton industry. Obviously the supply has two fundamental aspects, quantity and quality. As regards the former, the compilation and analysis of population and occupation statistics could add little of value for present pur poses, since, as we have seen in the recent war period, within limits of very general principles of social and industrial stratifi cation there is no such thing as ah arbitrary or permanent division of the industrial population into non-interchangeable classes, and munitions factories have drawn heavily on textile mills for a labor supply. Quantitative changes of population, from a positive point of view, have not been the Chief factor in indus trial adjustments, and to compile elaborate figures showing such changes would add little to the value of this study. In general, this quantitative change of labor supply has been a growth from about cotton mill employees in the United States in 1860, to in the United States in 1910, of whom were in New England. Within the New England group of states Massachusetts has always been in the lead, showing a growth of from in 1860 to in 1910. These are United States Census figures. More detailed figures for Massachusetts are presented in Chapter V. Following Massachusetts in the order of numerical importance, the other New England states are Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine and Connecticut. The development of the industry in Vermont is so small as to be almost negligible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
