Book Structural Transformation of Bangladesh Economy

Download or read book Structural Transformation of Bangladesh Economy written by Mustafa K. Mujeri and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-18 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the theory and global evidence on structural transformation along with stylised facts and implications using, among others, a dynamic panel model, for South Asia. The characteristics of the structural transformation process in Bangladesh bring out the relevance of a comprehensive and inclusive South Asian ‘brand’ in view of the challenges of large population size, high burden of poverty, rising inequalities and its compulsion to achieve rapid and sustained inclusive development. The analysis highlights several distinct characteristics of Bangladesh’s structural transformation including changes in value added, trade, employment, productivity, formal-informal jobs, and opportunities for low-skilled workers. The book suggests that the manufacturing sector could not create the required number of jobs and generate rapid absolute and relative productivity gains in the Bangladesh economy. Although the services sector has largely led output and employment growth, services subsectors with strong labour absorptive capacity have low average productivity. Hence, growth-enhancing structural transformation led by these subsectors is likely to be less dynamic than required for rapid employment-creating growth in the economy. The book’s analysis on COVID-19 and cyclone Amphan shows that an integrated disaster and development paradigm is needed for Bangladesh. An inclusive and health and well-being focused structural transformation presents the pathway to advance the people-centred approach to development in Bangladesh through both vulnerability reduction and investments in sustainable development that would offset both known and unknown disaster threats. The key for Bangladesh is to skillfully manage the ‘developer’s dilemma’ of achieving both structural transformation in terms of large productivity gains and inclusive growth for reducing poverty and rising inequalities. This book is relevant to students, academicians and development practitioners and others interested in contemporary development.

Book Bringing Class Back In

Download or read book Bringing Class Back In written by Scott G. McNall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a flurry of "poststructuralist," "post-Marxist," and "statecentered" approaches have emerged in historical and sociological scholarship. Far from ignoring these developments, the study of class has shaped and been shaped by them. As the selections in this volume indicate, class analysis changes and develops, while sustaining itself as a powerful, refined working tool in helping scholars understand the complexities of social and historical processes. This volume provides a cross-section of the rich body of social theory and empirical research being produced by scholars employing class analysis. It demonstrates the variety, vibrancy, and continuing value of class analysis in historical and sociological scholarship. The work of promising young scholars is combined with contributions from well-established figures to produce a volume that addresses continuing debates over the relationship between structure and agency, the centrality of class relations, and the dynamics of class formation, class culture, and class consciousness.

Book Bangladesh s Leather Industry

Download or read book Bangladesh s Leather Industry written by Joseph Strasser and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides an overview of how the Bangladeshi leather value chain is organised and governed. It analyses how the leather processing and leather goods/footwear subsectors are integrated into the global market and to what extent informal arrangements including illicit practices are conducive to global market entry. Power relations are dissected along the value chain, in order to analyse how local producers adapt to upholding competitiveness. The results of the work show the need to devise upgrading strategies which pay heed to the reality of informal dynamics in a global value chain (GVC) to improve the local producers’ competitiveness. The GVC perspective was combined with considerations on upgrading, subcontracting, middlemen and informality to adequately analyse the complexity of the transactions in the chain. The data of this study are drawn from empirical field studies in Dhaka, Bangladesh and other sections of the international leather value chain during the time period of 2010 to 2014. A qualitative research approach was complemented with quantitative methods.

Book An explorative study on business accelerators In the context of Bangladesh

This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, “business accelerator model” denotes the model or system following which the business accelerator runs its accelerator program and deals or interacts with the participating entrepreneurs. Lately, World Bank in one of its research has termed BiD Network as a “virtual accelerator” (World Bank, 2011), which resourcefully supports emerging market business start-ups virtually through facilitating local connections between local entrepreneurs, coaches and financiers. Apart from that, BiD Network itself is determined to support the entrepreneurs in developing economies through various innovative means and schemes, both locally and remotely. In this regard to follow-up its own services to a broader developing community, BiD Network is interested to look into the key characteristics of a business accelerator model which identifies how the business accelerator runs and deals with the entrepreneurs. In this context, the first research objective is to find out these key characteristics/functions of a business accelerator model by studying both the developed and developing country accelerators.

Book Policy Response Local Service Delivery and Governance in Bangladesh Nepal and Sri Lanka

This book was released on 2021-06-07 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes contemporary issues in governance, policy management, and policy performance both at the central and local levels in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The focus is on some central social issues such as empowerment, the inclusion of minorities, institutional trust, policy implementation, and local service delivery. Although these three countries have recently opted for democratic governance, the journey to establish and consolidate democracy as well as enhance governance capacity have been painful and filled with challenges. The chapters in this volume are country specific studies based on empirical data both quantitative and qualitative collected for several years and presented in readable prose. This does not, however, rule out the general applicability of the findings to other contexts within and beyond the borders of these countries. Despite huge differences in South Asia, the policy and governance issues and challenges that are explored, highlighted, and analyzed also have commonalities with other South Asian countries.
