Book Men at Arms

Download or read book Men at Arms written by Tony Hopkins and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tensions generated across Europe by the Reformation meant that from the 1530s war, or the threat of war, was ever-present. In England after the Act of Supremacy, fears of invasion by leading Catholic countries focused increased attention upon the nation's defences, while the unfolding international situation required levies for overseas service. Men from Monmouthshire were summoned to do duty on both fronts. The four documents published in this volume name several thousand of them; more than this, in many instances they record the equipment that they used and the clothing that they wore. The substance of this book lies in the extensive list it presents of Monmouthshire men who were mustered during the Tudor period. For the family historian, therefore, it will be an unrivalled source of previously unpublished information, but it will be equally valuable to anyone researching the military, social or administrative history of south-east Wales.

Book Covering Violence

Download or read book Covering Violence written by Roger Simpson and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2006-07-04 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reporting on violence is one of the most problematic features of journalistic practice-the area most frequently criticized by the public and those on the receiving end of that coverage. Now in its second edition, Covering Violence remains a crucial guide for becoming a sensitive and responsible reporter. Discussing such topics as rape and the ethics of interviewing children, the book gives students and journalists a detailed understanding of what is happening "on the scene" of a violent event, including where a reporter can go safely and legally, how to obtain the most useful information, and how best to interview and photograph victims and witnesses. This second edition takes our turbulent postmillennium history into account and emphasizes the consequences of frequent exposure to traumatic events. It offers new chapters on 9/11 and terrorism, the Columbine school shootings, and the photographing of violent events, as well as additional profiles of Vietnamese American, Native American, and African American journalists. More essential than ever, Covering Violence connects journalistic practices to the rapidly expanding body of literature on trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, and secondary traumatic stress, and pays close attention to current medical and political debates concerning victims' rights.

Book Survey of Medieval Winchester

Download or read book Survey of Medieval Winchester written by Derek Keene and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1985 with total page 1062 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the fourteenth century Winchester had lost its former eminence, but in trades, manufactures, and population, as well as by virtue of its administrative and ecclesiastical role, the city was still one of the major provincial centres in England. This Survey is based on a reconstruction of the histories of the houses, plots, gardens, and fields in the city and suburbs between c. 1300 and c. 1540, although in many instances both earlier and later periods are also covered. The reconstruction takes the form of a gazetteer (Part ii) of 1,128 histories of properties, together with accounts of 56 parish churches and the international fair of St. Giles, all illustrated by detailed maps. There is also a biographical register (Part iii) concerning more than 8,000 property-holders, most of whom lived in Winchester. This is the first time that it has been possible to piece together such a precise and detailed picture of both the topography and the inhabitants of a medieval town. Part i of the book contains a full discussion of the significance of this material and, in a manner relevant to an understanding of life in medieval towns in general, describes and defines such matters as the evolution of the physical environment, housing, land-tenure, property values, the parochial structure, the practice and organization of trades, and the ways in which the citizens of Winchester adapted to the declining status of their city.
