Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The euphoria of discovery is the only motivation many scientists need for studying nature and its secrets. Yet euphoria is rarely expressed in scientific publications. This book, a personal account of more than thirty years of fieldwork by one of the world’s leading bat biologists, wonderfully conveys the thrill of scientific discovery. Theodore Fleming’s work to document the lives and ecological importance of plant-visiting bats has taken him to the tropical forests of Panama, Costa Rica, and Australia, and to the lush Sonoran Desert of northwest Mexico and Arizona. This book tells the story of his fascinating career and recounts his many adventures in the field. Fleming weaves autobiographical reflections together with information on the natural history and ecology of bats and describes many other animals and plants he has encountered. His book details the stresses and rewards of life in scientific field camps, gives portraits of prominent biologists such as Dan Janzen and Peter Raven, and traces the development of modern tropical biology. A witness to the destruction and development of many of the forests he has visited throughout his career, Fleming makes a passionate plea for the conservation of these wild places.

Book Plant Bacteria Association and Symbiosis

Download or read book Plant Bacteria Association and Symbiosis written by Carlos Henrique Meneses and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the environmental impacts associated with chemical fertilizer misuse, society has turned its attention to alternative and sustainable forms of plant nutrition. By providing substances that would otherwise be scarce, plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPBs) can influence the availability of nutrients, directly affecting plants' metabolism. In addition to fixing nitrogen, and solubilizing phosphorus, and iron, they also produce hormones such as auxins, gibberellins, cytokinin's, and ethylene). Studies with PGPB around the world must be directed towards biological control and growth promotion integrated into a sustainable management system. Gradually, the problems identified in research with biological control are being solved. However, erratic results regarding the bacterization of cultures frustrate researchers and result from a lack of understanding of plant-microorganism interactions dynamics under various environmental conditions.

Book The Forgetting River

Download or read book The Forgetting River written by Doreen Carvajal and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unexpected and moving story of an American journalist who works to uncover her family’s long-buried Jewish ancestry in Spain. Raised a Catholic in California, New York Times journalist Doreen Carvajal is shocked when she discovers that her background may actually be connected to conversos from Inquisition-era Spain: Jews who were forced to renounce their faith and convert to Christianity or face torture and death. With vivid childhood memories of Sunday sermons, catechism, and the rosary, Carvajal travels to the centuries-old Andalucian town of Arcos de la Frontera, to investigate her lineage and recover her family’s original religious heritage. In Arcos, Carvajal comes to realize that fear remains a legacy of the Inquisition along with the cryptic messages left by its victims. Back at her childhood home in California, she uncovers papers documenting a family of Carvajals who were burned at the stake in the 16th-century territory of Mexico. Could the author’s family history be linked to the hidden history of Arcos? And could the unfortunate Carvajals have been her ancestors? As she strives to find proof that her family had been forced to convert to Christianity six hundred years ago, Carvajal comes to understand that the past flows like a river through time—and that while the truth might be submerged, it is never truly lost.

Book Meaning Making with Malignancy

Download or read book Meaning Making with Malignancy written by Keith Roberts and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-04-04 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The day after Thanksgiving of 2016, the author was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He has undergone various forms of treatment, including therapies at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota where he began a routine of sending updates and essays to friends and family every two weeks. In the first paragraph or two of each essay, he reported on his medical situation, grounding the essays in real time and in an ambiguous but life-affirming struggle. This was followed with an essay on meaning-making-how he was trying to make sense of the experience and what helped him cope. In some of these, he focuses on advice to people who have a chronically ill friend; an example is the essay, "Awkward! What to Say (or Not Say) to Friends with a Life-threatening Disease." On other occasions, he reflects on the experience of having a life-threatening disease and addresses others in that situation with essays like "Planning for the Future When 'Planning the Future' Feels like an Oxymoron." The reflections are sometimes informed by philosophical or theological analyses but more often by a sociological lens. The result is a musing of remarkable depth. Book The Lives of Lepidopterists

Download or read book The Lives of Lepidopterists written by Lee A. Dyer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inchworms, tiger moths, underwings, owlet moths, silkworms, sphinx moths, grass moths, and butterflies. Collectively, these and many others are the Lepidoptera, one of the most diverse groups of animals on the planet. Lepidoptera can be found in the highest tropical canopies, the driest deserts, and at the leading edge of science. The adults include some of the most beautiful insects that have inspired artists and have sailed through the dreams of human cultures for millennia. The immature stages (“caterpillars”), like the underwing depicted on the cover, link together vital processes in diverse terrestrial ecosystems that are only barely documented let alone understood. The people that study these animals are lepidopterists, and the goal of this book is to introduce them with their own words. In twenty chapters, lepidopterists tell their stories, and these tales mirror the diversity of nature in their range and depth. You will find individuals that wrestle with the challenges of scientific careers, stories of far flung travel sand close calls, and historical perspectives on recent decades of scientific break throughs.
