Book Sustainable Water and Sanitation Services

Download or read book Sustainable Water and Sanitation Services written by Livelihoods & Natural Resource Managment Institute and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-03 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the work of the WASHCost project run by the IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre (IRC), this book provides an evaluation of the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sectors in the context of developing countries and is the first systematic study of applying the life-cycle cost approach to assessing allocations. It presents unit cost estimates of the WASH sector across geographic locations and technologies, including rural and peri-urban areas, and these are compared with service levels. It analyses detailed data from more than 5000 households across nine agro-climatic zones in Andhra Pradesh State in India. Key issues assessed include poverty analysis of service levels, cost drivers and factors at the village and household level, and governance aspects such as transparency, accountability and value for money in relation to unit costs and service levels. This is the most comprehensive study of the WASH sector in India and elsewhere that utilises the life-cycle cost approach, along with GIS, econometric modelling and qualitative research methods. Not only does it contribute to research and methodology in this area, but the analysis also provides valuable insights for planners, policy makers and bi-lateral donors. The authors show how the methodology can also be applied in other developing country contexts.

Book Equality in Water and Sanitation Services

Download or read book Equality in Water and Sanitation Services written by Oliver Cumming and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is growing acceptance that the progress delivered under the Millennium Development Goal target for drinking water and sanitation has been inequitable. As a result, the progressive reduction of inequalities is now an explicit focus of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets, adopted in 2015, for universal access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). This shift in focus has implications for the way in which the next generation of WASH policies and programmes will be conceived, designed, financed and monitored. This book provides an authoritative textbook for students, as well as a point of reference for policy-makers and practitioners interested in reducing inequalities in access to WASH services. Four key areas are addressed: background to the human right to water and development goals; dimensions of inequality; case studies in delivering water and sanitation equitably; and monitoring progress in reducing inequality.

Book Cost Recovery for Water and Sanitation Utility Companies in Zambi

Download or read book Cost Recovery for Water and Sanitation Utility Companies in Zambi written by Chola Kasoma-Mbilima and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Water Supply and Sanitation (WSS) Sector in Zambia is undergoing a reform process which emanated into the creation of Commercial Utility companies (CUs) to provide water supply and sewerage services to the urban and peri-urban areas. CUs were expected to meet the full costs of service provision through user charges. Over the years, CUs have depended on government subsidies and donor support for operational and investment funds. In addition, they have operated amidst gross inefficiencies. To date, none of the CUs has reached full cost recovery. The salient findings of study were that Commercial Utilities operate inefficiently as evident from the huge water loses, low coverage rates and low hours of supply. These inefficiencies in turn affected the quality of service, revenue collection and also erode tariff increases. As a result, none of the Commercial Utilities was able to attain full cost recovery. The conclusion of the study was that Commercial Utilities should focus on becoming more efficient as opposed to upwards tariff adjustments to enhance financial viability and sustainability. NWASCO should, therefore, foster efficiency gains in the Water supply and Sanitation Sector.

Book Innovations in WASH Impact Measures

Download or read book Innovations in WASH Impact Measures written by Evan Thomas and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development includes water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) at its core. A dedicated Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 6) declares a commitment to "ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all." Monitoring progress toward this goal will be challenging: direct measures of water and sanitation service quality and use are either expensive or elusive. However, reliance on household surveys poses limitations and likely overstated progress during the Millennium Development Goal period. In Innovations in WASH Impact Measures: Water and Sanitation Measurement Technologies and Practices to Inform the Sustainable Development Goals, we review the landscape of proven and emerging technologies, methods, and approaches that can support and improve on the WASH indicators proposed for SDG target 6.1, "by 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all," and target 6.2, "by 2030, achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations." Although some of these technologies and methods are readily available, other promising approaches require further field evaluation and cost reductions. Emergent technologies, methods, and data-sharing platforms are increasingly aligned with program impact monitoring. Improved monitoring of water and sanitation interventions may allow more cost-effective and measurable results. In many cases, technologies and methods allow more complete and impartial data in time to allow program improvements. Of the myriad monitoring and evaluation methods, each has its own advantages and limitations. Surveys, ethnographies, and direct observation give context to more continuous and objective electronic sensor data. Overall, combined methodologies can provide a more comprehensive and instructive depiction of WASH usage and help the international development community measure our progress toward reaching the SDG WASH goals.

Book Water Sanitary and Waste Services for Buildings

Download or read book Water Sanitary and Waste Services for Buildings written by A.F.E. Wise and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water, sanitary and waste services represent a substantial proportion of the cost of construction, averaging 10% of the capital costs of building and with continuing costs in operation and maintenance. Nevertheless, they are often regarded as a 'Cinderella' within the building process. Parts of many different codes and regulations impact on these services, making an overall viewpoint more difficult to get. This new edition of this classic text draws together material from a variety of sources to provide the comprehensive coverage not available elsewhere. It is a resource for the sound design, operation and maintenance of these services and should be on the bookshelf of every building services engineer and architect.
