Book The Economic and Social Costs of Road Accidents in Australia

Download or read book The Economic and Social Costs of Road Accidents in Australia written by Alan S. Atkins and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains a review of recent accident cost estimation studies and proposes a unit cost framework which is considered appropriate from both conceptual and empirical view points for the estimation of the social costs of road accidents in Australia. A detailed set of unit and total cost estimates for Australia in 1978 is presented, based mainly on existing data sources, supplemented by accident claims data from a sample of insurance companies and the Motor Accidents Board of Victoria. These preliminary cost estimates are also classified according to injury severity. Problems associated with accident statistics and data sources are discussed together with the estimation procedures. The report concludes that social costs provide only 'minimum' estimates of the benefits gained from accident reduction, and also that the use of average cost levels is constrained by the skewed distribution of most accident cost characteristics. Further research directed towards refinement of the conceptual and empirical bases of these estimates is recommended. Z 860303 CHECKED.

Book Australia Too Many People The Population Question

Download or read book Australia Too Many People The Population Question written by Erik Paul and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 19/11/2001: This text addresses important questions about Australia's population size and distribution which are likely to dominate the country's politics in the 21st century. The book's approach to the population question begins with a broad analysis of Australia's wellbeing. A decline in the quality of life for many Australians, growing inequality and conflict suggest that Australia is overpopulated. Population size, however, does not explain Australia's problems. These are considered in the following chapters in the context of the shortcomings of Australia's democracy; the costs of maldevelopment in the distribution of the population; the mismanagement of resources; and the level of foreign ownership. The book then focuses on the changing external milieux and Australia's engagement with Asia. This analysis provides an understanding of building pressures for Australia to accept more migrants as well as the desirability for migration to promote Australia's integration with its Asian neighbours. In the last two chapters, the book examines the main domestic forces at work for a bigger or smaller population. It argues that Australia should be more generous and accept many more people than it presently does. Australia has room for many more people. Population distribution, however, is a critical issue in Australia's quest for a better future and population growth needs to be diverted away from the eastern seaboard and the main cities of Melbourne and Sydney to regional Australia. The book makes a case for population growth in coastal cities as part of northern Australia's regional development.

Book The Aftermath of Road Accidents

Download or read book The Aftermath of Road Accidents written by Margaret Mitchell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accidents on the road are so common place in our lives today it's easy to believe that there are plenty of support systems in place for the victims. Death and injuries on the road are construed primarily as medico-legal phenomena, re-inforced both by the way accidents are described and by issues of insurance and compensation for damage and personal injury. But there are many profound psychological and social consequences that remain underestimated. Margaret Mitchell has compiled this collection from leading researchers to examine this neglected area for the unseen victims: the families who have to cope with bereavement or a disabled relative, the driver who has killed but is medically uninjured. It will be of great direct value to psychologists, psychiatrists and other health professionals and will serve as a useful reference for those in the legal profession, voluntary associations and those with personal experience of road, traffic, accidents needing advice about where to seek further help.
