Book The Economic Theory of Costs

Download or read book The Economic Theory of Costs written by Matthew McCaffrey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of costs is a cornerstone of economic thinking, and figures crucially in the study of human action and society. From the first day of a principles-level course to the most advanced academic literature, costs play a vital role in virtually all behaviors and economic outcomes. How we make choices, why we trade, and how we build institutions and social orders are all problems that can be explained in light of the costs we face. This volume explores, develops, and critiques the rich literature on costs, examining some of the many ways cost remains relevant in economic theory and practice. The book especially studies costs from the perspective of the Austrian or “causal-realist” approach to economics. The chapters integrate the history of economic thought with contemporary research, finding valuable crossroads between numerous traditions in economics. They examine the role of costs in theories of choice and opportunity costs; demand and income effects; production and distribution; risk and interest rates; uncertainty and production; monopsony; Post-Keynesianism; transaction costs; socialism and management; and social entrepreneurship. Together, these papers represent an update and restatement of a central element in the economic way of thinking. Each chapter reveals how the Austrian, causalrealist approach to costs can be used to solve an important problem or debate in economics. These chapters are not only useful for students learning these concepts for the first time: they are also valuable for researchers seeking to understand the unique Austrian perspective and those who want to apply it to new problems.

Book Labour and Value Rethinking Marx s Theory of Exploitation

Download or read book Labour and Value Rethinking Marx s Theory of Exploitation written by Ernesto Screpanti and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2019-10-09 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Ernesto Screpanti provides a rigorous examination of Marx’s theory of exploitation, one of the cornerstones of Marxist thought. With precision and clarity, he identifies the holes in traditional readings of Marx’s theory before advancing his own original interpretation, drawing on contemporary philosophy and economic theory to provide a refreshingly interdisciplinary exegesis. Screpanti’s arguments are delivered with perspicuity and verve: this is a book that aims to spark a debate. He exposes ambiguities present in Marx’s exposition of his own theory, especially when dealing with the employment contract and the notions of ‘abstract labor’ and ‘labor value’, and he argues that these ambiguities have given rise to misunderstandings in previous analyses of Marx’s theory of exploitation. Screpanti’s own interpretation is a meticulously argued counterpoint to these traditional interpretations. Labour and Value is a significant contribution to the theory of economics, particularly Marxist economics. It will also be of great interest to scholars in other disciplines including sociology, political science, and moral and political philosophy. Screpanti’s clear and engaging writing style will attract the interested general reader as well as the academic theorist.

Book Microfoundations of Evolutionary Economics

Download or read book Microfoundations of Evolutionary Economics written by Yoshinori Shiozawa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides for the first time the microfoundations of evolutionary economics, enabling the reader to grasp a new framework for economic analysis that is compatible with evolutionary processes. Any independent approach to economics must include a value theory (or price theory) and price and quantity adjustment processes. Evolutionary economics has rightly and successfully concentrated its efforts on explaining evolutionary processes in technology and institutions. However, it does not have its own value theory and is not capable of explaining the workings of everyday economics processes, in which any evolutionary process would take place. Our point of departure is the addition of myopic agents with severely limited rational and forecasting capacities (in stark contrast to mainstream economics). We show how myopic agents, in a complex world, can produce a stable price system and demonstrate how they can adjust their production to changing demand flows. Agents behave without any knowledge of the overall process, and they generate a stable economy as large as the global network of exchanges. This is the true “miracle” of the market mechanism. In contrast to mainstream general equilibrium theory, this miracle can be explained without the need for an auctioneer or infinitely rational agents. Thanks to this book, evolutionary economics can now claim to be an independent approach to economics that can completely replace mainstream neoclassical economics.

Book An Introduction to the Theory of Value

Download or read book An Introduction to the Theory of Value written by William Smart and published by Ludwig von Mises Institute. This book was released on 2007 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is astonishing that a book of this quality would have been completely lost to history. It was the first to introduce the core ideas of the Menger branch of Marginalist thought to English readers. The first edition appeared in 1891. It appeared in many reprints until 1931. Professor William Smart had a gift for clear exposition that was typical of English academics of his time. His gifts here are employed in the defense of the Austrian contribution to value theory. Its lesson concerning subjectivism, value and price, causation and cost, utility, and the whole microeconomic foundation of the Austrian School, continue to be relevant - and still unabsorbed by the profession at large. Exactly as the title indicates, as an introduction to value theory, this book has never been superseded by any other. It is an outstanding statement of the first and second generations of the Austrian School, and essential for every student of economics in our times.

Book The Theory of Price Uncertainty Production and Profit

Download or read book The Theory of Price Uncertainty Production and Profit written by Clement Allan Tisdell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firms and farmers, under pure competition, must make production decisions in the face of price uncertainty. The author has integrated diverse theories of behavior under uncertainty to provide a new framework for his mathematical analysis of the impact of price uncertainty on the behavior of the firm. Drawing upon the work of Knight, Hicks, von Neumann, and Morgenstern, he develops a schema that accounts for a greater diversity of behavior than do existing theories, yet one which yields simple economic theorems of practical value. The conclusions he draws apply to both socialist and capitalist economics. Originally published in 1968. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Book Theory of Production

Download or read book Theory of Production written by Heinz D. Kurz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-02-28 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling book contains a comprehensive analytical treatment of the theory of production in a long-period framework. Although the authors take a 'Classical' approach to their subject, the scope of investigation and methods employed should interest all economic theorists. Professors Kurz and Salvadori explore economic systems that are characterised by a particular kind of primary input in the production process, such as different kinds of labour and natural resources. These systems and the corresponding prices can be understood to reflect characteristic features of a capitalist market economy in an ideal way: they express the pure logic of the relationship between value and distribution in an economic system. Specific chapters deal with prices and income distribution, economic growth, joint production, fixed capital, scarce natural resources (both renewable and exhaustible), and heterogeneous labour. The historical origins of the concepts used are also discussed in considerable detail.
