Book France and Germany in the South China Sea c 1840 1930

Download or read book France and Germany in the South China Sea c 1840 1930 written by Bert Becker and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-02 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores imperial power and the transnational encounters of shipowners and merchants in the South China Sea from 1840 to 1930. With British Hong Kong and French Indochina on its northern and western shores, the ‘Asian Mediterranean’ was for almost a century a crucible of power and an axis of economic struggle for coastal shipping companies from various nations. Merchant steamers shipped cargoes and passengers between ports of the region. Hong Kong, the global port city, and the colonial ports of Saigon and Haiphong developed into major hubs for the flow of goods and people, while Guangzhouwan survived as an almost forgotten outpost of Indochina. While previous research in this field has largely remained within the confines of colonial history, this book uses the examples of French and German companies operating in the South China Sea to demonstrate the extent to which transnational actors and business networks interacted with imperial power and the process of globalisation.

Africville is a sociological account of the relocation that reveals how lack of resources and inadequate planning led to devastating consequences for Africville relocatees. Africville is a work of painstaking scholarship that reveals in detail the social injustice that marked both the life and the death of the community. Book Compassionate Landscape

Download or read book Compassionate Landscape written by Humphrey Carver and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1975-12-15 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the top of the Clent Hills in England, one can look out over the Black Country to the north and the Forest of Arden to the south. As a boy Humphrey Carver looked at these two landscapes – one synonymous with the harsh ugliness and dehumanization brought by industry, the other with idyllic harmony between man and land. At the start of the depression Carver came to Canada where, in many and varied ways, he has tried to bring the qualities of humanity and compassion to the landscape shaped by the man. His career has involved him in the initiation of, and contact with, almost everything that has happened in the last forty years in the field of housing, planning, design, and urban and community action. This book is a history of the development of an awareness, of institutions, and of policies on the shaping of the man-made environment. It is however more than that. Mr Carver describes his own life and sensibilities, his family and his colleagues, with a trained and compassionate eye and a taut and careful prose. Rarely does one encounter an autobiography of such perceptive and satisfying craftsmanship. Those who know him will not be surprised; those who do not will be delighted to discover a work of such a warm and sympathetic humanity. Humphrey Carver has a message for us all.

Book Newfoundland Modern

  • Release : 2011-10-17
  • ISBN : 0773587411
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Newfoundland Modern written by Robert Mellin and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2011-10-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In over 220 drawings and photographs, Robert Mellin presents the development of architecture in the decades immediately following Newfoundland's 1949 union with Canada. Newfoundland's wholehearted embrace of modern architecture in this era affected planning as well as the design of cultural facilities, commercial and public buildings, housing, recreation, educational facilities, and places of worship, and Premier Joseph Smallwood often relied on modern architecture to demonstrate the progress made by his administration. Mellin explores the links between Smallwood and modern architecture, revealing how Smallwood guided the development of numerous architectural projects. He also looks at the work of two innovative local architects, Frederick A. Colbourne and Angus J. Campbell, showing how their architecture was influenced by their life-long interest in art. The first comprehensive work on an important period of architectural development in urban and rural Newfoundland, Newfoundland Modern complements Mellin's award-winning book on the outport of Tilting, Fogo Island.
