Book Dixie Lullaby

  • Author : Mark Kemp
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2007-11-01
  • ISBN : 1416590463
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Dixie Lullaby written by Mark Kemp and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rock & roll has transformed American culture more profoundly than any other art form. During the 1960s, it defined a generation of young people as political and social idealists, helped end the Vietnam War, and ushered in the sexual revolution. In Dixie Lullaby, veteran music journalist Mark Kemp shows that rock also renewed the identity of a generation of white southerners who came of age in the decade after segregation -- the heyday of disco, Jimmy Carter, and Saturday Night Live. Growing up in North Carolina in the 1970s, Kemp experienced pain, confusion, and shame as a result of the South's residual civil rights battles. His elementary school was integrated in 1968, the year Kemp reached third grade; his aunts, uncles, and grandparents held outdated racist views that were typical of the time; his parents, however, believed blacks should be extended the same treatment as whites, but also counseled their children to respect their elder relatives. "I loved the land that surrounded me but hated the history that haunted that land," Kemp writes. When rock music, specifically southern rock, entered his life, he began to see a new way to identify himself, beyond the legacy of racism and stereotypes of southern small-mindedness that had marked his early childhood. Well into adulthood Kemp struggled with the self-loathing familiar to many white southerners. But the seeds of forgiveness were planted in adolescence when he first heard Duane Allman and Ronnie Van Zant pour their feelings into their songs. In the tradition of music historians such as Nick Tosches and Peter Guralnick, Kemp masterfully blends into his narrative the stories of southern rock bands --from heavy hitters such as the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and R.E.M. to influential but less-known groups such as Drive-By Truckers -- as well as the personal experiences of their fans. In dozens of interviews, he charts the course of southern rock & roll. Before civil rights, the popular music of the South was a small, often racially integrated world, but after Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, black musicians struck out on their own. Their white counterparts were left to their own devices, and thus southern rock was born: a mix of popular southern styles that arose when predominantly white rockers combined rural folk, country, and rockabilly with the blues and jazz of African-American culture. This down-home, flannel-wearing, ass-kicking brand of rock took the nation by storm in the 1970s. The music gave southern kids who emulated these musicians a newfound voice. Kemp and his peers now had something they could be proud of: southern rock united them and gave them a new identity that went beyond outside perceptions of the South as one big racist backwater. Kemp offers a lyrical, thought-provoking, searingly intimate, and utterly original journey through the South of the 1960s, '70s, '80s, and '90s, viewed through the prism of rock & roll. With brilliant insight, he reveals the curative and unifying impact of rock on southerners who came of age under its influence in the chaotic years following desegregation. Dixie Lullaby fairly resonates with redemption.

Book excerpt: After my dreams of becoming a teacher were finally a reality, life had thrown me into the powerful current of adulthood. Marriage was the norm Transferring jobs occurred. New adventures were thrown at me. Family and friends came and went from my life. All of it affected me, shaped me, tossed me around like a little boat in a raging storm. Then, I was diagnosed with lupus, changing how I lived in addition to what I lived. Life became more precious to me, but at the same time, I felt it pushed me under. Welcome to your late twenties and early thirties. Life doesn't go as planned, but you have to sail on toward the horizon. In this collection, I explore more mature themes, dealing with trying to hold on to your happy youth while wading through the darkness that is always there, such as confusion, loneliness, stress, violence, and even death. Still, despite these topics, I look for the lighthouse, the beacon of hope to continue on, all through poems, short stories, children stories (about my cat and grandma), and other literary works. With the power of writing and creativity fueling me, I was able to stay afloat in light. Exclusive to this collection also is my new adult novella, Dreaming For You, following the story of Frankie Ragner, a former teenage Hollywood heartthrob that wants to better himself by being a producer, despite his addictions that have been forced upon him since youth. His only salvation when he sinks into his transgressions is his dreams, a lovely maiden visiting him in different forms when he's at his worst. She gives him everything he desires, but she's only a dream too good to be real. Still, if someone gives you such a vision, shouldn't you chase it? Endless Silver Ocean has tales for the young and young at heart, mature and impactful reading, all through poems and stories that I wrote from personal struggles, this work the most revealing about who I am as a person. Even when waves are choppy and cruel, I look to my words, my stars, to conquer this endless silver ocean.

Book Ordinary Affects

  • Author : Kathleen Stewart
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2007-09-20
  • ISBN : 082239040X
  • Pages : 145 pages

Download or read book Ordinary Affects written by Kathleen Stewart and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2007-09-20 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ordinary Affects is a singular argument for attention to the affective dimensions of everyday life and the potential that animates the ordinary. Known for her focus on the poetics and politics of language and landscape, the anthropologist Kathleen Stewart ponders how ordinary impacts create the subject as a capacity to affect and be affected. In a series of brief vignettes combining storytelling, close ethnographic detail, and critical analysis, Stewart relates the intensities and banalities of common experiences and strange encounters, half-spied scenes and the lingering resonance of passing events. While most of the instances rendered are from Stewart’s own life, she writes in the third person in order to reflect on how intimate experiences of emotion, the body, other people, and time inextricably link us to the outside world. Stewart refrains from positing an overarching system—whether it’s called globalization or neoliberalism or capitalism—to describe the ways that economic, political, and social forces shape individual lives. Instead, she begins with the disparate, fragmented, and seemingly inconsequential experiences of everyday life to bring attention to the ordinary as an integral site of cultural politics. Ordinary affect, she insists, is registered in its particularities, yet it connects people and creates common experiences that shape public feeling. Through this anecdotal history—one that poetically ponders the extremes of the ordinary and portrays the dense network of social and personal connections that constitute a life—Stewart asserts the necessity of attending to the fleeting and changeable aspects of existence in order to recognize the complex personal and social dynamics of the political world.

Book Tengu

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roald Knutsen
  • Publisher : Global Oriental
  • Release : 2011-08-15
  • ISBN : 9004218025
  • Pages : 281 pages

Download or read book Tengu written by Roald Knutsen and published by Global Oriental. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully illustrated volume, including an eight-page colour-plate section, is the first in-depth study in English to examine the warrior and shamanic characteristics and significance of tengu in the martial art culture (bugei) of Muromachi Japan (1336-1573). According to Roald Knutsen, who is widely known for his writings on the samurai tradition, prompting his life-long study of tengu – the part-human, part-animal creatures – was the early discovery that the tengu of the Muromachi period were interacting with the deadly serious bugei masters teaching the arts of war. Here were beings who did not conform to the comic, goblin-like creatures of common folklore and were not the creations of the Buddhist priests intent on demonizing that which they did not understand and could not control. As this study shows, the part-hidden tengu under review passed on and taught the clearest theory of tactics and strategy to bushi of the highest calibre, the absorption and mastery of which often decided if the warrior and his clan lived or were annihilated on the all-too-frequent killing grounds of the Muromachi age. Tengu will be widely welcomed in many contexts including studies relating to martial arts, religion and folklore, shamanism and mythology, and the social and military history of Japan.

Book The Demon s Sermon on the Martial Arts

Download or read book The Demon s Sermon on the Martial Arts written by Sean Michael Wilson and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A visually thrilling graphic novel adaptation of classic martial arts parables on swordsmanship and strategy—written by a real-life samurai The Demon’s Sermon on the Martial Arts is a classic collection of martial arts tales, written by the eighteenth-century samurai Issai Chozanshi. Featuring demons, insects, birds, cats, and numerous other creatures, the stories here may seem whimsical, but they contain essential teachings that offer insight into the fundamental principles of the martial arts. This graphic novel version based on Chozanshi’s text brings these tales alive in a captivating and immediately accessible way. Infused with Chozanshi’s deep understanding of Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Shinto, the tales elucidate the nature of conflict, the importance of following one’s own nature, yin and yang, the cultivation and transformation of ch’i (life energy), and the attainment of mushin (no-mind). Ultimately, the reader learns in a visually exciting way that the path of the sword is a path of self-knowledge and leads to an understanding of life itself.
