Book excerpt: Ancient Greek Cosmogony is the first detailed, comprehensive account of ancient Greek theories of the origins of the world. It covers the period from 800 BC to 600 AD, beginning with myths concerning the creation of the world; the cosmogonies of all the major Greek and Roman thinkers; and the debate between Greek philosophical cosmogony and early Christian views. It argues that Greeks formulated many of the perennial problems of philosophical cosmogony and produced philosophically and scientifically interesting answers. The atomists argued that our world was one among many worlds, and came about by chance. Plato argued that it is unique, and the product of design. Empedocles and the Stoics, in quite different ways, argued that there was an unending cycle whereby the world is generated, destroyed and generated again. Aristotle on the other hand argued that there was no such thing as cosmogony, and the world has always existed. Reactions to, and developments of, these ideas are traced through Hellenistic philosophy and the debates in early Christianity on whether God created the world from nothing or from some pre-existing chaos. The book examines issues of the origins of life and the elements for the ancient Greeks, and how the cosmos will come to an end. It argues that there were several interesting debates between Greek philosophers on the fundamental principles of cosmogony, and that these debates were influential on the development of Greek philosophy and science.

This book was released on 2018-08-13 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The active principle is attracted by the passive and the Great Nag, the serpent emblem of the eternity, attracts its tail to its mouth forming thereby a circle in that incessant pursuit of the negative by the positive. The two opposing forces, unconscious and non-existing when separated, they become consciousness and life when brought together. On the post-mortem disintegration of the constituent parts of man and their return their respective source. It is not part of the evolutionary law that the human mind, our fifth principle, should be fully developed before the Fifth Round. The Seeress of Prévorst is an example of a Fifth Rounder; Count St. Germain, of a Sixth Rounder. Confucius and Plato were Fifth Rounders. While Gautama Buddha and Shankaracharya are also termed Sixth Rounders, allegorically, the former is still higher and greater than all Fifth Rounders. However, precocious minds on this Round are abnormal. Monads are not discrete principles, limited or conditioned, but rays from One Universal and Absolute Principle. The entrance into a dark room through the same aperture of one ray of sunlight following another will not constitute two rays, but one ray intensified.

Book Cosmogony and Creation in Balinese Tradition

Download or read book Cosmogony and Creation in Balinese Tradition written by C Hooykaas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1974 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 1,000 years ago in India there lived five ascetics, Pasupata's, who went around naked, with ungroomed hair. The fame of their holiness spread to Java and Bali, where they became heavenly seers, aspects both of Shiva and Buddha, celestial gods even, and as such connected with the creation. Classificatory thought classes them with a man's four older brothers: amniotic fluid, blood, vernix caseosa, and the placenta, the helpers or enemies par excellence of each and every person, whether layman or priest. This book brings together much material, from old to very modern, which indicates the extent to which these ideas were, and still are, living reality for the Balinese. The most important texts, both prose and poetry, and the comparison of many manuscripts published here for the first time, form the body of this book.
