Book Pasolini Requiem

Download or read book Pasolini Requiem written by Barth David Schwartz and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-05-10 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its appearance in 1992, Barth David Schwartz's biography of Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975) has been the standard reference and starting point for anyone embarking on a study of Pasolini in English, situating the multimedia artist within twentieth-century Italian and world culture. Pasolini was unique among his contemporaries--Federico Fellini, for example, didn't write novels, Giorgio Bassani did not direct films, and Eugenio Montale did not write popular journalism. Although Pasolini excelled at all of these genres, he was first and foremost a poet (see Chicago's bilingual edition of his selected poems from 2014). Whatever he was doing, Pasolini's poetry informed all aspects of his creative life, from his plays to his visual art, from his films to his political essays. In this second edition, which includes a new Afterword that contains material that has come to light since the early 1990s and revelations about Pasolini's last days, Schwartz introduces this multimedia artist to a new generation of scholars and students trying to negotiate the complexities of the Italian cultural landscape. As Susan Sontag wrote, Pasolini is "indisputably the most remarkable figure to have emerged in Italian Arts and letters since the Second World War." This new edition, revised and updated throughout, is a natural companion to our volume of poetry and, with the poems, will be a perennial seller for years to come.

Book Requiem For Modern Politics

Download or read book Requiem For Modern Politics written by William Ophuls and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long-promised sequel to Ophuls’s influential and controversial classic Ecology and the Politics of Scarcity is an equally provocative critique of the liberal philosophy of government. Ophuls contends that the modern political paradigm—that is, the body of political concepts and beliefs bequeathed to us by the Enlightenment—is no longer intellectually tenable or practically viable. Our attempt to live individualistically, hedonistically, and rationally has failed utterly, causing a comprehensive crisis that is at once political, military, economic, ecological, ethical, psychological, and spiritual. Liberal politics has abandoned virtue, rejected community, and flouted nature, thereby becoming the author of its own demise. By exposing the intrinsically contradictory and self-destructive character of Hobbesian political systems, Ophuls subverts our conventional wisdom at every turn. Indeed, his impassioned text reads more like a Greek tragedy than a conventional political argument. He critiques feminism, multiculturalism, the welfare state, and a host of other “liberal” shibboleths—but Ophuls is not yet another neoconservative. The aim of his thesis is far more radical and progressive, offering a political vision that entirely transcends the categories of liberal thought. His is a Thoreauvian vision of a “politics of consciousness” rooted in ecology as the moral and intellectual basis for governance in the twenty-first century. Ophuls holds that a polity based on a renewed erotic connection with nature offers a genuine solution to this crisis of contemporary civilization and that only within such a polity will it be possible to fulfill the worthy liberal goal of individual self-development. Ophuls’s work will interest and challenge a wide spectrum of readers, though it will not necessarily be well liked or easily accepted. No one will put down this book with his or her settled convictions about American culture intact, nor will readers ever again take modern civilization and its survival for granted.

Book Speculative Whiteness

Download or read book Speculative Whiteness written by Jordan S. Carroll and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2024-10-22 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reveals the alt-right’s project to claim science fiction and—by extension—the future Fascists such as Richard Spencer interpret science fiction films and literature as saying only white men have the imagination required to invent a high-tech future. Other white nationalists envision racist utopias filled with Aryan supermen and all-white space colonies. Speculative Whiteness traces these ideas through the entangled histories of science fiction culture and white supremacist politics, showing that debates about representation in science fiction films and literature are struggles over who has the right to imagine and inhabit the future. Although fascists insist that tomorrow belongs to them, they have always been and will continue to be contested by antifascist fans willing to fight for the future.

How do dancers that have never studied with, or worked under, Martha Graham maintain her vision? All of these questions, and many more, are considered in this fascinating book, authored by one of the Martha Graham Company's ex-principal dancers, which illuminates the ongoing significance of the Martha Graham Dance Company almost 100 years after it was founded. Book 13 A Collection of Horror and Weird Fiction

Download or read book 13 A Collection of Horror and Weird Fiction written by Michael Boatman and published by Crossroad Press. This book was released on 2016-02-27 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 13 is a collection of horror stories reflecting various elements of the American Dream. But here, the Dream has been twisted beyond easy recognition. These tales of Americana gone hideously and sometimes hysterically wrong feature a dark parade of misunderstood monsters, homicidal heroes, invading aliens, media-friendly fiends, rogue presidents… and even an occasional zombie. Like the funhouse mirrors in a carnival for crackheads, these stories reflect (and distort) the diversity of ills faced by a spinning roulette wheel of alternate Americas. Here you’ll find Americas that might have been or, perhaps, one that lurks, giggling and debauched, just over the next horizon. The inhabitants of these other Americas tell jokes that cut. One or two of them might carry a cream pie in one hand and a switchblade concealed down the backs of their pants. Their Home Sweet Horrors occupy strange colonies; realms that lie both within and outside traditional genre identifications, spanning the literary range from weird western, urban fantasy, comic crime, science- fiction and subtle political commentary (with cannibals.) There’s even a Christmas story, a tale of childhood survival featuring the last person you might reasonably expect to meet during the zombie apocalypse. In our reality, ever since the founding of the original thirteen colonies, the American Dream remains strong, of course; a clarion call to action for friends and enemies alike. Therefore, many of the stories in 13 can be enjoyed strictly for laughs. But in a nation fraught with environmental catastrophes, global conflicts, economic, religious and racial unrest, when the real monsters finally show up to check out the neighborhood… who’s to say the joke’s not on us? Stories included in this collection: The Flinch Hadley Shimmerhorn: American Icon Born Again Manny Miracle Is Alive and Well and Dying in the 29th Dimension! A Father’s Work Our Kind of People The Greenhouse Jimmy Sticks and the Outlaw Critter of Doom Across the Black Plains Christmastime in Zombietown Folds Survivor: Monster Island 2025 The Last American President

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Modisane's book, read today by all South Africans, will expose our raw pasts, private and public in their nature, which are still present in many forms as unacknowledged antecedents ... Engrossed and fascinated, I turned the pages of Blame Me on History as fast as I could.' – Njabulo S Ndebele Feeling an exile in the country of his birth, the talented journalist and leading black intellectual Bloke Modisane left South Africa in 1959. It was shortly after the apartheid government had bulldozed Sophiatown, the township of his childhood. His biting indictment of apartheid, Blame Me on History, was published in 1963 – and banned shortly afterwards. Modisane offers a harrowing account of the degradation and oppression faced daily by black South Africans. His penetrating observations and insightful commentary paint a vivid picture of what it meant to be black in apartheid South Africa. At the same time, his evocative writing transports the reader back to a time when Sophiatown still teemed with life. This 60th-anniversary edition of Modisane's autobiography serves as an example of passionate resistance to the scourge of racial discrimination in our country, and is a reminder not to forget our recent past.
