Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we exist? For centuries, this question was the sole province of religion and philosophy. But now science is ready to take a seat at the table. According to the prevailing scientific paradigm, the universe tends toward randomness; it functions according to laws without purpose, and the emergence of life is an accident devoid of meaning. But this bleak interpretation of nature is currently being challenged by cutting-edge findings at the intersection of physics, biology, neuroscience, and information theory—generally referred to as “complexity science.” Thanks to a new understanding of evolution, as well as recent advances in our understanding of the phenomenon known as emergence, a new cosmic narrative is taking shape: Nature’s simplest “parts” come together to form ever-greater “wholes” in a process that has no end in sight. In The Romance of Reality, cognitive neuroscientist Bobby Azarian explains the science behind this new view of reality and explores what it means for all of us. In engaging, accessible prose, Azarian outlines the fundamental misunderstanding of thermodynamics at the heart of the old assumptions about the universe’s evolution, and shows us the evidence that suggests that the universe is a “self-organizing” system, one that is moving toward increasing complexity and awareness. Cosmologist and science communicator Carl Sagan once said of humanity that “we are a way for the cosmos to know itself.” The Romance of Reality shows that this poetic statement in fact rests on a scientific foundation and gives us a new way to know the cosmos, along with a riveting vision of life that imbues existence with meaning—nothing supernatural required.

Book excerpt: Through the poetry of Wallace Stevens has been studied from a variety of critical perspectives, most critics share the view that Stevens is a secular poet who refuses religious definitions of man and nature. His major subject, it is thought, is poetry, which in its broadest sense stands as synecdoche for the possibilities that inhere in the mind engaged in creating itself even as it creates its art. This study confirms that Stevens's major concern is indeed poetry, but it proposes that when Steven speaks of the peerless poem qualified by such epithets as "grand" or "central" or "ultimate" or "supreme," he is not referring to the objective artifact with which we commonly associate the term but is rather outlining the contours of the Hermetic transcendental Man encountered in the course of spiritual meditation. Accordingly, art, in Steven's view, is a secondary or "lesser" form eventually superseded by the soul metamorphosed into an image of deity - what Stevens called "pure poetry" or the "ultimate poem." Woodman traces the appearance of the Heavenly Man of spiritual alchemy in "Owl's Clover," Steven's longest poem, and in the figure of the hero, a major motif in Stevens's work from the thirties on. She then considers the alchemical tradition to clarify the uses Steven made of its symbolic system. Succeeding chapters consider the relation of the Hermetic Man to the "supreme fiction"; the spiritual reciprocity between imagination and reality - variations of the Hermetic doctrine of correspondence; the decreation and recreation of self and nature that constitute the metamorphic stages of Hermetic meditation; and the Hermetic theory of transcendental perception that lies at the core of Steven's account of human transformation. The final chapter turns to Steven's native Pennsylvania to suggest the means by which he may have encountered the Rosicrucian tradition (the corporate form of modern Hermetism) that appears to have profoundly influenced his creative life.

Book excerpt: Is there a purpose to life? Is there a higher power? Is there an eternity? How can our lives be more fulfi lling? How do all the pieces fi t together? What is the nature of the universe? Where does all this star stuff come from? What is the origin of the universe? Curiosity of the author, Christian Eibelshauser, compelled him to search for the answers to some of life’s most enduring questions. Now his astonishing findings are revealed in - ORIGIN : A Journey Of Discovery The power behind the universe – what he calls the infi nite totality – is present in every part of the universe. In fact, it is the universe. As such, the infinite totality is present in each individual and is known as the “cosmic being” (traditionally called a soul or intuition). He believes that the reason so many have failed at finding true happiness in their lives is because they have fallen out of touch with their personal cosmic being. But there is hope. To become reacquainted with your cosmic being, you must begin consciously examining your Everyday actions and beliefs, in an effort to get rid of outdated patterns of living and thinking. He also explores the creation of the universe from a scientifi c standpoint. Using physics, the author shows that, on its most basic level, all matter is made up from nothing more than energy (with an in-depth explanation of the term ‘energy’). Therefore, the universe is the infi nite totality – or energy – itself. Finally, the author presents a new and totally revolutionary model of the universe, hitherto neither contemplated nor depicted.

Book Cosmos Culture Cultural Evolution in a Cosmic Context

Download or read book Cosmos Culture Cultural Evolution in a Cosmic Context written by Steven J. Dick and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2012-01-27 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOTE: NO FURTHER DISCOUNT FOR THIS PRINT PRODUCT--OVERSTOCK SALE -- Significantly reduced list price During the last 50 years, coincident with the Space Age, cosmic evolution has been recognized as the master narrative of the universe, history writ large. Cosmic evolution includes physical, biological, and cultural evolution, and of these the latter is by far the most rapid. In this volume, authors with diverse backgrounds in science, history, anthropology, and more, consider culture in the context of the cosmos. How does our knowledge of cosmic evolution affect terrestrial culture? Conversely, how does our knowledge of cultural evolution affect our thinking about possible cultures in the cosmos? Are life, mind, and culture of fundamental significance to the grand story of the cosmos that has generated its own self-understanding through science, rational reasoning, and mathematics? Might this lead to cultural evolution on a large enough scale to allow the universe to both create and steer itself toward its own destiny? Book excerpt: As collective 21st century intellect of humanity transcends age-old populist obsession about consciousness, to explore the core question of why there is something than nothing; the novel-alternative entity of Information and its biochemical substrates stand to present brilliant insights into the spectrum of life-living, experience-cognition, universe and even immortality. This presupposes complete redesign of the very label and denomination of humanity and cultures, as it demystifies and de-scams the pathologies of hypocrisy-depravity-criminality of contemporary life. The 57-year old author’s 54th eBook journeys it all. Information is the singular utility-worth-value in the universe and consciousness as a navigational media must be a highly galvanized interface to successfully lead a human body-mind not only through diverse physical-psychological milieus but also through varied simulated realities of personal experiencing-cognitions, using the light and energy of true Information. Human life-living prosperity and wealth is proportional to acquired information and guided experiences-cognitions, which the true-right Information leads to, in infinite multidimensionality. Therefore, sanity-discipline-objectivity-holism of both Information as well as Consciousness is precondition of richness of human life-living. Human intellectual journeys to decipher Realities and Self are all about extending the outer margins of Experience-Cognition to unravel the constructs of the infinitely layered nothingness. Every small evolution of human intellect is a step ahead in discovering or deciphering something novel and alternative, in the infiniteness of nothingness. Contemporary intellect seems to have hit the criticality of this ‘somethingness’. This human journey is facilitated as modern science has amply understood the centrality and criticality of Information, its constituent bits as well as the complexities of emergent web of probable realities that is available for ever evolving consciousness to decipher. The very idea of capabilities of consciousness to decipher those computationally reducible realities in the cosmic expanse of computational irreducibility is now growingly being understood and underlined. In a way, contemporary time is the true and real beginning of actual human civilization, as modern human intellect has now begun to unravel the very Causalities beneath the Substrate of all realities. This very crucial Substrate is now being understood in its true holism. This calls for complete redesign and reconstruction of not only the contemporary cultures and existing life-living purposes but the very idea and label of humanity itself as very basis of dominant and all pervading pathologies of hypocrisy-depravity-criminality in contemporary cultures is now clearly explainable. The 21st century human intellect has the informational wherewithal about ‘core causalities’ to redefine true humanism and its relationship with cosmic constructs by remodeling the very basis of contemporary sense of consciousness, experience-cognition and spectrum of causalities in cosmic milieus. The 57’s 54th very humbly dwells on this all. The contemporary human intellect has now reached a stage of evolution, where it has begun to unravel and decipher the very core-critical Information entrenched in the biochemical substrate of all ‘somethingness’, in the infiniteness of nothingness. As the questions itself have now been understood in holism of the novel-alternative light of substrate dynamics of Information, the finality of completely new answers are surfacing. The 57’s 54th details it all. Welcome…

Book Your Evolving Soul

Download or read book Your Evolving Soul written by Byron Belitsos and published by Red Wheel/Weiser. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sparks of genuine revelation are contained in many religions and esoteric systems. Your Evolving Soul declares that we’ve been graced with a new revelation for our time: the little-known Urantia Book, which has quietly sold over one million copies in a dozen languages. According to the author of this comparative analysis, the disclosures about self, soul, and spirit in the Urantia Revelation stand alone in their coherence and richness of detail. Your Evolving Soul is the first book to fully explain this advanced teaching for the ordinary reader, offering clarity and inspiration for those on any path. Belitsos compares the Urantia Book’s futuristic teachings about the threefold design of the human self-system to the models of selfhood proposed by many previous thinkers, ranging from from Plato and Saint Augustine to Carl Jung and Ken Wilber. He provides essential context for this discussion by illumining the relationship of the Urantia text to scientific psychology and to the world’s religions, with special emphasis on Christianity and Buddhism. Your Evolving Soul also provides an introduction to the cosmology, theology, and philosophy of the Urantia teaching, and reveals its many affinities with contemporary integral theory and modern theology. Through his lucid interpretation of the Urantia Revelation, the author offers a model of the human self and soul to be tested, examined, and compared—not a finished truth to be accepted as doctrine. Readers of this book will discover a plausible hypothesis of how our evolving soul becomes an immortal vehicle of our true identity. They also learn how our soul-making decisions can lead to the development of a creative, loving, unified, and perfected personality, now and into the afterlife.

Book The Cosmic Hologram

Download or read book The Cosmic Hologram written by Jude Currivan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How holographic patterns of information underlie our physical reality • 2017 Nautilus Silver Award • Includes myriad evidence from a wide range of cutting-edge scientific discoveries showing our Universe is an interconnected hologram of information • Explains how consciousness is a major component of the cosmic hologram of information, making us both manifestations and co-creators of our reality • Reconciles Quantum Mechanics and Einstein’s Theory of Relativity by showing that energy-matter and space-time are complementary expressions of information Our understanding of the Universe is about to transform at all levels, from the tiniest Planck scale to the vast reaches of space. Recent scientific discoveries show that the information that upholds all of our modern technologies is exactly the same as the universal in-formation that underpins, pervades, and is all we call physical reality. Exploring how information is more fundamental than energy, matter, space, or time, Jude Currivan, Ph.D., examines the latest research across many fields of study and many scales of existence to show how our Universe is in-formed and holographically manifested. She explains how the fractal in-formational patterns that guide behavior at the atomic level also guide the structure of galactic clusters in space. She demonstrates how the in-formational relationships that underlie earthquakes are the same as those that play out during human conflicts. She shows how cities grow in the same in-formational ways that galaxies evolve and how the dynamic in-formational forms that pervade ecosystems are identical to the informational structures of the Internet and our social behaviors. Demonstrating how information is physically real, the author explores how consciousness connects us to the many interconnected layers of universal in-formation, making us both manifestations and co-creators of the cosmic hologram of reality. She explains how Quantum Mechanics and Einstein’s Theory of Relativity can at last be reconciled if we consider energy-matter and space-time as complementary expressions of information, and she explores how the cosmic hologram underlies the true origin of species and our own evolution. Concurring too with ancient spiritual wisdom, the author offers solid evidence that consciousness is not something we “have” but the fundamental nature of what we and the entire Universe are. With this understanding, we can each transform our own lives and help co-create and in-form the world around us.

Download or read book The Eric Voegelin Reader written by Charles R. Embry and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time Eric Voegelin fled Hitler’s regime and made his way to the United States in 1938, he had already written four books criticizing Nazi racism, establishing what would be the focus of his life’s work: to account for the endemic political violence of the twentieth century. One of the most original political philosophers of the period, Voegelin has largely avoided ideological labels or categorizations of his work. Because of this, however, and because no one work or volume of his can do justice to his overall project, his work has been seen as difficult to approach. Drawing from the University of Missouri Press’s thirty-four-volume edition of The Collected Works of Eric Voegelin (1990-2009), Charles Embry and Glenn Hughes have assembled a selection of representative works of Voegelin, satisfying a longstanding need for a single volume that can serve as a general introduction to Voegelin’s philosophy. The collection includes writings that demonstrate the range and creativity of Voegelin’s thought as it developed from 1956 until his death in 1985 in his search for the history of order in human society. The Reader begins with excerpts from Autobiographical Reflections (1973), which include an orienting mixture of biographical information, philosophical motivations, and the scope of Voegelin’s project. It reflects key periods of Voegelin’s philosophical development, pivoting on his flight from the Gestapo. The next section focuses on Voegelin’s understanding of the contemporary need to re-ground political science in a non-positivistic, post-Weberian outlook and method. It begins with Voegelin’s historical survey of science and scientism, followed by his explanation of what political science now requires in his introduction to The New Science of Politics. Also included are two essays that exemplify the practice of this “new science.” Voegelin started his academic career as a political scientist, and these early essays indicate his wide philosophical vision. Voegelin recognized that a fully responsible “new science of politics” would require the development of a philosophy of history. This led to the writing of his magnum opus, the five-volume Order and History (1956–1985). This section of the Reader includes his introductions to volumes 1, 2 and 4 and his most essential accounts of the theoretical requirements and historical scope of a philosophy of history adequate to present-day scholarship and historical discoveries. In the course of his career, Voegelin came to understand that political science, political philosophy, and philosophy of history must have as their theoretical nucleus a sound philosophical anthropology based on an accurate philosophy of human consciousness. The next set of writings consists of one late lecture and four late essays that exemplify how Voegelin recovers the wisdom of classical philosophy and the Western religious tradition while criticizing modern misrepresentations of consciousness. The result is Voegelin’s contemporary accounts of the nature of reason, the challenge of truly rational discussion, and the search for divine origins and the life of the human spirit. During his philosophical journey, Voegelin addressed the historical situatedness of human existence, explicating the historicity of human consciousness in a manner that gave full due to the challenges of acknowledging both human immersion in the story of history and the ability of consciousness to arrive at philosophically valid truths about existence that are transhistorical. The essays in this final section present the culmination of his philosophical meditation on history, consciousness, and reality.
