Book Gamma Ray Astronomy from 1011 to 1014 EV Using the Atmospheric Cerenkov Technique

Download or read book Gamma Ray Astronomy from 1011 to 1014 EV Using the Atmospheric Cerenkov Technique written by N. A. Porter and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The atmospheric Cerenkov technique has been widely used over the past two decades to search for point sources of 1011 to 1014 eV gamma rays. In this technique the gamma rays are detected by the Cerenkov light emission from the small air showers that they create in the atmosphere. The basic principles underlying the technique are reviewed with particular reference to the experiments performed to date, (September 1977). The production and absorption processes that pertain to this energy region are discussed. There is strong evidence for the detection of 10^12 eV gamma rays from NP0532, Centaurus A and Cygnus X-3. Models for these, and other sources for which upper limits have been derived, are outlined. There appears to be no other technique that can compete with the atmospheric Cerenkov technique in this energy range. The methods by which the present flux sensitivity can be reduced by factors of 10 - 100 are discussed; it is also possible to extend observations into the previously unexplored 10 - 100 Gev energy range.

Book Very High Energy Cosmic Gamma Radiation A Crucial Window On The Extreme Universe

Download or read book Very High Energy Cosmic Gamma Radiation A Crucial Window On The Extreme Universe written by Felix A Aharonian and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004-07-19 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gamma ray astronomy, the branch of high energy astrophysics that studies the sky in energetic γ-ray photons, is destined to play a crucial role in the exploration of nonthermal phenomena in the Universe in their most extreme and violent forms. The great potential of this discipline offers impressive coverage of many “hot topics” of modern astrophysics and cosmology, such as the origin of galactic and extragalactic cosmic rays, particle acceleration and radiation processes under extreme astrophysical conditions, and the search for dark matter. The recent observational results and exciting theoretical predictions provide a strong rationale for a deep study of cosmic radiation with forthcoming satellite-borne and ground-based detectors in the so-called very high energy domain of the electromagnetic spectrum above 1010 eV.This invaluable book presents the motivations and highlights the principal objectives of the field, as well as demonstrates its intrinsic links to other branches of high energy astrophysics. Preference is given to three topical areas: (i) origin of cosmic rays; (ii) physics and astrophysics of relativistic jets; (iii) observational gamma ray cosmology. Also, an essential part of the book is devoted to the discussion of the principal mechanisms of production and absorption of energetic γ-rays in different astrophysical environments, as well as to the description of the detection methods of high energy cosmic γ-radiation.

  • ISBN : 3662026813
  • Pages : 451 pages

Download or read book The New Cosmos written by Albrecht Unsöld and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy, astrophysics and space research have developed extensively and rapidly in the last few decades. The new opportunities for observation afforded by space travel, the development of high-sensitivity light detectors and the use of powerful computers have revealed new aspects of the fascinating world of galaxies and quasars, stars and planets. The fourth, completely revised edition of The New Cosmos bears witness to this explosive development. It provides a comprehensive but concise introduction to all of astronomy and astrophysics. It stresses observations and theoretical principles equally, requiring of the reader only basic mathematical and scientific background knowledge. Like its predecessors, this edition of The New Cosmos will be welcomed by students and researchers in the fields of astronomy, physics and earth sciences, as well as by serious amateur astronomers.

Download or read book Gamma Ray Bursts written by Gilbert Vedrenne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-20 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since their discovery was first announced in 1973, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been among the most fascination objects in the universe. While the initial mystery has gone, the fascination continues, sustained by the close connection linking GRBs with some of the most fundamental topics in modern astrophysics and cosmology. Both authors have been active in GRB observations for over two decades and have produced an outstanding account on both the history and the perspectives of GRB research.
