Book The Republic of Cthulhu

Download or read book The Republic of Cthulhu written by Eric Wilson and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If parapolitics, a branch of radical criminology that studies the interactions between public entities and clandestine agencies, is to develop as an academic discipline, then it must develop a coherent theory of aesthetics in order to successfully perform its primary function: to render perceptible extra-judicial phenomena that have hitherto resisted formal classification. Wilson offers the work of H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) as an example of the relevance of subversive literature-in this case, cosmic horror and the weird tale-to the parapolitical criminologist. Cosmic horror is a form of writing that relies heavily upon the epistemological assumption of a radical and irreconcilable disjunction between appearance and reality, perception and truth. In many ways, the well-constructed weird tale strongly resembles the hard-boiled detective story or the noir thriller in that the resolution of the narrative hinges upon a dramatically shattering confrontation with an unspeakable reality. Apart from its obvious utilization of conspiracy theory, the primary attraction of the Lovecraftian text lies with its remarkably sophisticated utilization of two central tropes of classical aesthetic theory-the sublime and the grotesque. Not only does Lovecraft's oeuvre represent a remarkable use of both of these motifs, but the raw literary power of the Lovecraftian weird tale serves as an outstanding exemplar for the parapolitical scholar to emulate in formulating an alternative mode of discourse, or poetics.

Book The Order of Days

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Stuart
  • Publisher : Crown
  • Release : 2012-11-27
  • ISBN : 0385527276
  • Pages : 370 pages

Download or read book The Order of Days written by David Stuart and published by Crown. This book was released on 2012-11-27 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's foremost expert on Maya culture looks at 2012 hysteria and explains the truth about what the Maya meant and what we want to believe. Apocalypse 2012: An Investigation into Civilizations End. The World Cataclysm in 2012. 2012: The return of Quetzalcoatl. According to many of these alarmingly titled books, the ancient Maya not only had a keen insight into the mystical workings of our planet and the cosmos, but they were also able to predict that the world will end in the year 2012. David Stuart, the foremost scholar of the Maya and recipient of numerous awards for his work, takes a hard look at the frenzy over 2012 and offers a fascination (and accurate) trip through Mayan culture and belief. Stuart shows how the idea that the "end of the Mayan calendar," which supposedly heralds the end of our own existence, says far more about our culture than about the ancient Maya. The Order of Days explores how the real intellectual achievement of ancient Maya timekeeping and worldview is far more impressive and remarkable than any of the popular, and often outrageous, claims about this advanced civilization. As someone who has studied the Maya for nearly all of his life and who specializes in reading their ancient texts, Stuart sees the 2012 hubbub as the most recent in a long chain of related ideas about Mesoamericans, the Maya in particular, that depicts them as somehow oddball, not "of this world," or as having some strong mystical link to other realms. Because the year 2012 has no prominent role in anything the ancient Maya ever actually wrote, Stuart takes a wider look at the Maya concepts of time and their underlying philosophy as we can best understand them. The ancient Maya, Stuart contends, were worthy of study and admiration not because they were strange but because they were altogether human, and they developed a compelling vision of time unlike any other civilization before or since.

Book The Conspiracy against the Human Race

Download or read book The Conspiracy against the Human Race written by Thomas Ligotti and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Thomas Ligotti's first nonfiction outing, an examination of the meaning (or meaninglessness) of life through an insightful, unsparing argument that proves the greatest horrors are not the products of our imagination but instead are found in reality. "There is a signature motif discernible in both works of philosophical pessimism and supernatural horror. It may be stated thus: Behind the scenes of life lurks something pernicious that makes a nightmare of our world." His fiction is known to be some of the most terrifying in the genre of supernatural horror, but Thomas Ligotti's first nonfiction book may be even scarier. Drawing on philosophy, literature, neuroscience, and other fields of study, Ligotti takes the penetrating lens of his imagination and turns it on his audience, causing them to grapple with the brutal reality that they are living a meaningless nightmare, and anyone who feels otherwise is simply acting out an optimistic fallacy. At once a guidebook to pessimistic thought and a relentless critique of humanity's employment of self-deception to cope with the pervasive suffering of their existence, The Conspiracy against the Human Race may just convince readers that there is more than a measure of truth in the despairing yet unexpectedly liberating negativity that is widely considered a hallmark of Ligotti's work.

Book American Cosmic

    Book Details:
  • Author : D.W. Pasulka
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2019-01-18
  • ISBN : 0190693495
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book American Cosmic written by D.W. Pasulka and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than half of American adults and more than seventy-five percent of young Americans believe in intelligent extraterrestrial life. This level of belief rivals that of belief in God. American Cosmic examines the mechanisms at work behind the thriving belief system in extraterrestrial life, a system that is changing and even supplanting traditional religions. Over the course of a six-year ethnographic study, D.W. Pasulka interviewed successful and influential scientists, professionals, and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs who believe in extraterrestrial intelligence, thereby disproving the common misconception that only fringe members of society believe in UFOs. She argues that widespread belief in aliens is due to a number of factors including their ubiquity in modern media like The X-Files, which can influence memory, and the believability lent to that media by the search for planets that might support life. American Cosmic explores the intriguing question of how people interpret unexplainable experiences, and argues that the media is replacing religion as a cultural authority that offers believers answers about non-human intelligent life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pattie McLaine never planned to be a professional psychic consultant. She had started writing at an early age and that was what she thought she really wanted to do with her life. Early on, she had no real clue about what Destiny had in store for her-no clear remembrance of a promise made to the Universe long before she was even born-a promise to perhaps try to help people again and shed some Light-as she had during many other lifetimes throughout the centuries. A series of strange and wonderful events took place, which had actually occurred in many different guises from the day that she was born. When Pattie was three months old, her mother took her into a church, knelt before the altar, and dedicated her daughter's life to God-without asking for Pattie's permission, of course. There were many other strange and incredible events that happened all along the way that are revealed within the pages of this book-which altogether amounted to what Pattie decided had to be a clever, capricious and cunning scheme-if not an Absolute Cosmic Conspiracy!

Book excerpt: Named one of the "113 Best Books of Modern Horror" by critic Stanley Wiater, Deus-X offers a potent combination of mystery, psychological horror, and spiritual terror. Two seemingly unrelated events set in motion a complex plot: in a secret government installation in California, a political prisoner is grotesquely executed; while on the East Coast, an elderly Vermont farmer vanishes, the victim of an otherwordly abduction. Three amateur investigators with divergent world views--a psychologist, a physicist, and a priest--join forces to discover the relationship between these two events. Stalked by a murderous psychopath intent on stopping them, they encounter UFOs, inexplicable religious phenomena, multiple personalities, and overwhelming psychic violence. They are drawn inexorably forward through the gothic halls of a Canadian hospital for elderly and demented priests to the locked chambers of a covert American repository for space-age weaponry, where they uncover a sinister application of computer technology.

Book The Flat Earth Conspiracy

Download or read book The Flat Earth Conspiracy written by Eric Dubay and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-11-09 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wolves in sheep's clothing have pulled the wool over our eyes. For almost 500 years, the masses have been thoroughly deceived by a cosmic fairy-tale of astronomical proportions. We have been taught a falsehood so gigantic and diabolical that it has blinded us from our own experience and common sense, from seeing the world and the universe as they truly are. Through pseudo-science books and programs, mass media and public education, universities and government propaganda, the world has been systematically brain-washed, slowly indoctrinated over centuries into the unquestioning belief of the greatest lie of all time. A multi-generational conspiracy has succeeded, in the minds of the masses, to pick up the fixed Earth, shape it into a ball, spin it in circles, and throw it around the Sun! The greatest cover-up of all time, NASA and Freemasonry's biggest secret, is that we are living on a plane, not a planet, that Earth is the flat, stationary center of the universe.
