Book excerpt: In the USA, it has been collected in the Appalachian Mountains from Georgia to Maine, but also on the Ozark Plateau and in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. [...] The cause of the disappearance of the Black- foam Lichen from these provinces is uncertain, but it is significant that declines have also been observed in adjacent states of the USA. [...] The meristematic zone, at the tips of the Anzia lobes, initially produce a small amount of lower cortex and then the spongy tissue, sometimes termed the spongiostratum (Lawrey 1984; Hensen and Dobelman 1987; Jahns 1988). [...] Figure 1. Close-up photograph of the thallus of A. colpodes showing an apothecium, with its brown disc (on the right), and the black pycnidia on the lobe ends (on the left). [...] Distribution in the USA Anzia colpodes is the most common of the three species of the genus in the USA; the other two are A. ornata and A. americana.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Threats and Limiting Factors The threats to the survival of the Atlantic and Boreal populations of the Boreal Felt Lichen were assessed using the Threats Calculator. [...] With respect to the Atlantic Population of the Boreal Felt Lichen, high levels of forest harvesting have resulted in the decline in the amount of available lichen habitat. [...] The lichen is protected by provincial legislation being designated as 'vulnerable' by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador and as 'endangered' by the provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. [...] It is not clear whether the generic name derives from the hairiness of the upper cortex or that of the underside (erion being the Greek name for wool and derma that for skin). [...] Previous to these findings, more than 95% of the global population was thought to be in Canada, with the known Alaskan population it is now 88% but the percentage may be as low as 10-20% if the lichen proves to be common in the potentially available habitat in Alaska.
