Book Civil Society and Class Politics

Download or read book Civil Society and Class Politics written by Irving Louis Horowitz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seymour Martin Lipset's work throughout a long and distinguished career has been stamped by several features: a powerful linkage of research data and social theory, innovative views of historical events, and a realization that politics is an activity native to all human beings, voters and non-voters, democratic and non-democratic systems, and advanced and developing economies. He has earned the right to be called a genuine pioneer in the field now recognized as political sociology. In this special collection of professional comment and personal tribute, some of Lipset's closest colleagues have gathered to review his life work in political sociology. This volume includes essays on sociology and socialism, the collapse of class politics, political leadership, the perpetuation of inequality across generations, political extremism, religion as a source of polarization, working-class authoritarianism, and an examination of civil life in the United States across the century. Among the contributors are Nathan Glazer, Terry Nichols Clark, Richard J. Samuels, Sidney Verba, Nancy Burns, Kay Lehman Schlozman, Robert B. Smith, William Schneider, Dick Houtman, and Marcella Ridlen Ray. The volume is further graced by two special features: an academic memoir entitled "Steady Work" written by Lipset, and a full-scale bibliography of his books, monographs and pamphlets. In short, this is a specialist volume for social scientists that can be easily enjoyed by readers outside the field. This volume was initially presented as a double issue of The American Sociologist. Horowitz was commissioned by the editor of the journal to serve as special editor for the volume. In turn, the contributions originated at a series of invited panels at the Eastern Sociological Society meetings in 2002.

Book Multiple Populisms

Download or read book Multiple Populisms written by Paul Blokker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive interpretation of the multiple manifestations of populism using Italy, the only country amongst consolidated constitutional democracies in which populist political forces have been in government on various occasions since the early 1990s, as the starting point and benchmark. Populism is a complex, multi-faceted political phenomenon which redefines many of the essential characteristics of democracy; participation, representation, and political conflict. This book considers contemporary versions of populism that pose a real challenge to representative and constitutional democracy. Contributors provide an integrative interpretation of populism and analyse its principal historical, social and politico-legal variables to provide a multi-dimensional reflection on the concept of populism, comprehensive analysis of the populist phenomenon and a theoretical and comparative perspective on the diverse political experiences of populism. Based on conceptual and interdisciplinary reflections from expert authors, this book will be of great interest to scholars and post-graduate students of cultural studies, European studies, political sociology, political science, comparative politics, political philosophy, and political theory with an interest in a comparative and interdisciplinary theory of populism and its manifestations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural warfare and trust: fighting the Mafia in Palermo concentrates on a central issue in research on democratic processes: the development of generalised trust. The existence of generalised trust and confidence in a society is decisive for economic development and an effective democracy. Is it possible to fight persistent values of distrust and non-cooperation? Is it possible to support the development of generalised trust through public action and education? The book addresses these questions by examining political efforts to combat Palermo’s Mafia-controlled heritage and to turn a tradition of non-cooperation and distrust into cooperation and trust. In particular, it focuses on the school program launched in Palermo during the mid-1990s, which was designed to break the Mafia’s territorial and mental control. Combining theories on social capital and civic education, the author presents and analyses new quantitative and qualitative research carried out in seven public schools in Palermo. This book will be valuable to students, academics and researchers interested in social capital and trust, Italian politics, civic education, organised crime, local government and democratic practice.

Download or read book La Movimentista written by Raffaella Fanelli and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-05-19 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Mirage of America in Contemporary Italian Literature and Film

Download or read book The Mirage of America in Contemporary Italian Literature and Film written by Barbara Alfano and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mirage of America in Contemporary Italian Literature and Film explores the use of images associated with the United States in Italian novels and films released between the 1980s and the 2000s. In this study, Barbara Alfano looks at the ways in which the individuals portrayed in these works – and the intellectuals who created them – confront the cultural construct of the American myth. As Alfano demonstrates, this myth is an integral part of Italians’ discourse to define themselves culturally – in essence, Italian intellectuals talk about America often for the purpose of talking about Italy. The book draws attention to the importance of Italian literature and film as explorations of an individual’s ethics, and to how these productions allow for functioning across cultures. It thus differentiates itself from other studies on the subject that aim at establishing the relevance and influence of American culture on Italian twentieth-century artistic representations.

Book Echoing Voices in Italian Literature

Download or read book Echoing Voices in Italian Literature written by Teresa Franco and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays explores the reception of classics and translation from modern languages as two different, yet synergic, ways of engaging with literary canons and established traditions in 20th-century Italy. These two areas complement each other and equally contribute to shape several kinds of identities: authorial, literary, national and cultural. Foregrounding the transnational aspects of key concepts such as poetics, literary voice, canon and tradition, the book is intended for scholars and students of Italian literature and culture, classical reception and translation studies. With its two shifting focuses, on forms of classical tradition and forms of literary translation, the volume brings to the fore new configurations of 20th-century literature, culture and thought.

Book Elsa Morante s Politics of Writing

Download or read book Elsa Morante s Politics of Writing written by Stefania Lucamante and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elsa Morante’s Politics of Writing is a collected volume of twenty-one essays written by Morante specialists and international scholars. Essays gather attention on four broad critical topics, namely the relationship Morante entertained with the arts, cinema, theatre, and the visual arts; new critical approaches to her four novels; treatment of body and sexual politics; and Morante’s prophetic voice as it emerges in both her literary works and her essayistic writings. Essays focus on Elsa Morante’s strategies to address her wide disinterest (and contempt) for the Italian intellectual status quo of her time, regardless of its political side, while showing at once her own kind of ideological commitment. Further, contributors tackle the ways in which Morante’s writings shape classical oppositions such as engagement and enchantment with the world, sin and repentance, self-reflection, and corporality, as well as how her engagement in the visual arts, theatre, and cinematic adaptations of her works garner further perspectives to her stories and characters. Her works—particularly the novels Menzogna e sortilegio (House of Liars, 1948), La Storia: Romanzo (History: A Novel, 1974) and, more explicitly, Aracoeli (Aracoeli, 1982)—foreshadowed and advanced tenets and structures later affirmed by postmodernism, namely the fragmentation of narrative cells, rhizomatic narratives, lack of a linear temporal consistency, and meta- and self-reflective processes.
