Suffice it to mention a few classical fields: electrophysiology, genetics, physics, computer sciences, and more recently, social and marketing neurosciences. Of course, this large growth resulted in the production of many books. Perhaps the visual system and the visual cortex were in the vanguard because most animals do not produce their own light and offer thus the invaluable advantage of allowing investigators to conduct experiments in full control of the stimulus. In addition, the fascinating evolution of scientific techniques, the immense productivity of recent research, and the ensuing literature make it virtually impossible to publish in a single volume all worthwhile work accomplished throughout the scientific world. The days when a single individual, as Diderot, could undertake the production of an encyclopedia are gone forever. Indeed most approaches to studying the nervous system are valid and neuroscientists produce an almost astronomical number of interesting data accompanied by extremely worthy hypotheses which in turn generate new ventures in search of brain functions. Yet, it is fully justified to make an encore and to publish a book dedicated to visual cortex and beyond. Many reasons validate a book assembling chapters written by active researchers. Each has the opportunity to bind together data and explore original ideas whose fate will not fall into the hands of uncompromising reviewers of traditional journals. This book focuses on the cerebral cortex with a large emphasis on vision. Yet it offers the reader diverse approaches employed to investigate the brain, for instance, computer simulation, cellular responses, or rivalry between various targets and goal directed actions. This volume thus covers a large spectrum of research even though it is impossible to include all topics in the extremely diverse field of neurosciences.

Book excerpt: The mammalian visual system evolved to process and represent objects within the complexities of the natural world to appropriately guide behavior in order to ensure survival and reproduction. Visual neuroscience has long sought to understand the neural basis of these processes, but the complexity of both the visual world and the brain has traditionally required a highly reductionist approach. The classical approach has led to the development of models of visual perception that are largely based on the analysis of how single cells within the visual system respond to simple and parametrically defined visual stimuli. However our ultimate goal is to understand how the visual system operates in the natural world. The experiments and results contained in this thesis were conducted, in part, to explore the cat's visual system during the presentation of time varying natural scenes, i.e. movies, and to attempt to validate our current working models of the visual system. Novel large-scale recording methods were employed to record from and characterize responses of large populations of cat primary visual cortex neurons during classical as well as movie stimulation. Contrary to the current models and our general understanding of how visual cortex represents information, groups of adjacent neurons responded heterogeneously to the movies presented and individual responses were very brief and highly sparse in time. The diversity and dynamics of the spiking activity was also significantly correlated with fluctuations of the ongoing local field potentials, specifically within the gamma frequency band, ranging from 25 to 90Hz. These gamma band oscillations also exhibited rich spatiotemporal dynamics throughout the movie presentations. In conclusion, time-varying natural scenes evoke response dynamics within the cat primary visual cortex not typically observed under more classical stimulus regimes. Future experimentation and the construction of biologically feasible models of visual cortex should take into account the diversity of responses observed under more natural stimulus conditions.

Book excerpt: The nucleus basalis of the basal forebrain is an essential component of the neuromodulatory system controlling the behavioral state of an animal, and it is thought to play key roles in regulating arousal and attention. However, the effect of NB activation on sensory processing remains poorly understood. Using polytrode recording in rat visual cortex, we show that NB stimulation causes prominent decorrelation between neurons and marked improvement in the reliability of neuronal responses to natural scenes. The decorrelation depends on local activation of cortical muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, while the increased reliability involves distributed neural circuits, as evidenced by NB-induced changes in thalamic responses. Further analysis showed that the decorrelation and increased reliability improve cortical representation of natural stimuli in a complementary manner. Thus, the basal forebrain neuromodulatory circuit, which is known to be activated during aroused and attentive states, acts through both local and distributed mechanisms to improve sensory coding.

In Representation and Recognition in Vision, Shimon Edelman bases a comprehensive approach to visual representation on the notion of correspondence between proximal (internal) and distal similarities in objects. This leads to a computationally feasible and formally veridical representation of distal objects that addresses the needs of shape categorization and can be used to derive models of perceived similarity. Edelman first discusses the representational needs of various visual recognition tasks, and surveys current theories of representation in this context. He then develops a theory of representation that is related to Shepard's notion of second-order isomorphism between representations and their targets. Edelman goes beyond Shepard by specifying the conditions under which the representations can be made formally veridical. Edelman assesses his theory's performance in identification and categorization of 3D shapes and examines it in light of psychological and neurobiological data concerning the object-processing stream in primate vision. Book excerpt: "This work examines neural efficiency under conditions of noninvasive electrical stimulation, and in patients with damage to primary visual cortex. Transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) was used in combination with an equivalent noise paradigm in order to better understand the effect of added low current random noise on visual perception of oriented Gabor stimuli under varying quantities of external white noise. The design implemented allowed us to distinguish online effects of stimulation from offline effects, and the extent to which perception was altered across a variety of stimulus conditions and difficulties. We observe an improvement of neural processing only with online stimulation at high levels of external noise, suggesting that the added noise introduced to the system by tRNS A) can improve perception B) can do so only while actively stimulating cortex during a task and C) improves only stimuli of a specific type, making it critical to consider the effect of noise in tRNS effects moving forward. This work narrows the possible mechanisms by which tRNS may improve perception, and helps to explain another stimulus dimension that may be critical for successfully leveraging the greatest benefit from this type of transcranial stimulation. In patients with damage to primary visual cortex, we present work that considers the neural mechanisms underpinning recovery of visual discriminations in the damaged hemifield of homonymous hemianopic (or cortically blind) patients. Specifically, we examine the role that motion processing and adaptation play in recovery of visual processing following psychophysical training. We find evidence for recovery of motion adaptation that supports the hypothesis that motion adaptation occurs early in the visual hierarchy and is inherited by extrastriate regions (Kohn & Movshon, 2003; Larsson et al, 2016). Previously unreported delays in cortical processing are observed across visual cortex for moving dot stimuli, including the intact hemisphere of cortically blind patients that cannot be accounted for by differences in hemodynamic response. Finally, we observe highly differential functional connectivity that suggests a neural basis for behavioral deficits not only in untrained regions of the damaged hemisphere, but for deficits in visual processing that occur in otherwise intact vision"--Pages ix-x.
