Download or read book Corruption and Nigerian Political Economy written by Ibrahim Kawuley Mikai and published by UUM Press. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book analyses the background of corrupt practices in the annals of Nigerian political history from pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial era down to the fourth democratic dispensation. The book also establishes a nexus between corruption and political economy in the Nigerian political theatre. Indeed, corruption undermines the rules of law, equity, transparency democratization and national development which breed poverty, insecurity and general underdevelopment among the populace. Meanwhile, the political economy approach and the theories of corruption and their application on Nigerian political economy is highlighted. The role of policy-makers and stakeholders with their policies and programmes on combating corruption is also analysed. Furthermore, the giant efforts of international organizations, civil society organizations (CSOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on combating the menace of corruption are also pointed out. The book serves as a guide to researchers on the subject matter and the freedom fighters with their anti-corruption crusade or mandates so as to proffer solutions to corrupt practices and scandals in Nigeria and beyond.

Book Moral Economies of Corruption

Download or read book Moral Economies of Corruption written by Steven Pierce and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria is famous for "419" e-mails asking recipients for bank account information and for scandals involving the disappearance of billions of dollars from government coffers. Corruption permeates even minor official interactions, from traffic control to university admissions. In Moral Economies of Corruption Steven Pierce provides a cultural history of the last 150 years of corruption in Nigeria as a case study for considering how corruption plays an important role in the processes of political change in all states. He suggests that corruption is best understood in Nigeria, as well as in all other nations, as a culturally contingent set of political discourses and historically embedded practices. The best solution to combatting Nigerian government corruption, Pierce contends, is not through attempts to prevent officials from diverting public revenue to self-interested ends, but to ask how public ends can be served by accommodating Nigeria's history of patronage as a fundamental political principle.

Book excerpt: Despite being Africa’s largest economy and most populous country, with abundant natural resources, Nigeria still faces substantial development challenges. This book argues that corruption lies at the heart of many of the country’s problems. Drawing on a range of different disciplinary perspectives, this volume explores the relationship between corruption and development, investigating the causes, contexts, and consequences of corruption, and the pathways for addressing it. As well as covering the wider background and theory surrounding corruption in the country, the book will investigate different sectors: the media, the judiciary, the health sector, industry, the criminal justice system, and of course politics and governance. The book concludes by considering attitudes and perceptions to corruption within Nigeria, current approaches to countering corruption, and future pathways to addressing the problem. This book’s critical investigation of the links between corruption and development in Nigeria will be of interest to researchers of corruption, development and African Studies, as well as to policy makers, practitioners, and local stakeholders.

Book excerpt: This book documents five presentations made at a two-day conference on corruption, organised by the Institute for Academic Freedom, University of Port Harcourt in May 2000. The editor provides an overview, observing the extent to which the crisis of corruption - indivisible from the crisis of the Nigerian state and the colonial legacy - impinges upon national economic calculations; and sets out the anti-corruption and good-governance manifesto and the human rights agenda of the conference. The ensuing papers cover, and present possible solutions for: the political economy of corruption; the Nigerian state as an instrument of corruption; corruption and the challenges of development; and underdevelopment and corruption.

Book The Political Constraints on Nigerian Economic Development Since the Independence

Download or read book The Political Constraints on Nigerian Economic Development Since the Independence written by Cajetan Iwunze and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since gaining its independence in 1960, Nigeria has never really existed as a unified nation, but rather as scattered tribal sects that often fail to coexist with one another peacefully. This uneasy alliance has led to civil war in the past, and is responsible for the continuing conflict between Muslims and Christians that exists in Nigeria today. Because of these deeply embedded political constraints, Nigeria has also fallen behind in terms of economic development. However Nigeria is not a nation without resources. Many of Nigeria's conflicts are centered around oil. As it stands currently, Nigeria's wealth is concentrated in the hands of the ruling elite and little has been done to improve the situation of the poorest segments of the population. But the prolonged and dismal situation in the Nigerian economy that serves as the inspiration behind The Political Constraints on Nigerian Economic Development Since the Independence is not without a potential solution. Author Cajetan Iwunze intended this book as more than just a statement against the tribal nationalism and the economic bandits that continue to loot the country. It also aims to suggest that if there is a solution, it lies in reforming the country's institutions so that Nigeria's oil wealth can be used for the benefit of everyone. Although he currently lives in the UK, Cajetan Iwunze was born in eastern Nigeria. Mr. Iwunze is an international human rights campaigner, writer and teacher who serves as the Director of Professional Tutors Ltd. and the CEO of Dyswrite Ltd. Book The Causes of Instability in Nigeria and Implications for the United States Enlarged Edition

Download or read book The Causes of Instability in Nigeria and Implications for the United States Enlarged Edition written by Clarence J. Bouchat and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the political economy of Nigeria is needed to reveal the root causes of its many ethnic, religious, economic, and political problems and address them for the long term. The pressures now weighing on Nigeria could literally fracture the state along deep fault lines if rampant corruption and partisanship continues. As mutually important partners for both of our interests in Africa, the United States should assist in specific but indirect ways to help Nigerians overcome their political economic problems. Within such assistance, the role of the U.S. military is particularly delicate but needed through focused aid to specific programs and sharing of expertise, all best managed through employing units that are regionally aligned to Nigeria or West Africa.
