Book Corrosion by Solutions Containing HNO3 HF and Reducing Agents

Download or read book Corrosion by Solutions Containing HNO3 HF and Reducing Agents written by M. LaVern Holzworth and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The corrosion resistance of various materials of construction was measured in mixtures of nitric and hydrofluoric acids that contained hydroxylamine nitrate, sulfamic acid, and ascorbic acid. The corrosion of Types 304L and 309b stainless steel was investigated as a function of the concentrations of the components of the medium. Methods of decreasing corrosion by addition of ferric, cupric, and silver cations as inhibitors, or aluminum as a complexing agent were found.

Book INHIBITION OF HNO3 HF CORROSION OF TYPE 304 L STAINLESS STEEL WITH Al NO3 3

Download or read book INHIBITION OF HNO3 HF CORROSION OF TYPE 304 L STAINLESS STEEL WITH Al NO3 3 written by and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To prevent corrosion of equipment by nitric acid hydrofluoric acid mixture, aluminum nitrate nonohydrate is added to tie up the fluoride, either as aluthinum fluoride or a tight complex. It was found that a solution of nitric acid, hydrofluoric acid, and aluthinum nitrate nonohydraie in which the hydrofluonic acid - aluminum nitrate nonohydrate molar ratio is 3, did not show serious corrosive attack on the 300-series stainless steel. (J.E.D.).

Book Corrosion by Fluoride Solutions

Download or read book Corrosion by Fluoride Solutions written by Woodfin E. Shuler and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various alloys and stainless steels were tested for their resistance to corrosion in hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid, and in mixtures of the tow acids. Stainless 309Cb corroded in 4M HF - 10M HNO3 at rates of about 80 mils per year at 80©C. Neutralized solutions containing 1 to 12M fluoride corroded mild steel at rates of about 10 mils per year at 95©C.

Book Corrosion by Solutions Containing HNO sub 3 HF and Reducing Agents

Download or read book Corrosion by Solutions Containing HNO sub 3 HF and Reducing Agents written by and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The corrosion of stainless steel in mixtures of nitric and hydrofluoric acids is markedly increased by the addition of eitber hydroxylamine nitrate or sulfamic acid, but not by the addition of ascorbic acid. Silver, Hastelloy C, and Monel corroded at rates less than five mils per year in a nitric acid-- hydrofluoric acid solution containing hydroxylamine nitrate, sulfamic acid, and ascorbic acid. Hastelloy B, Haynes 25, Carpenter 20, and Nionel corroded at rates up to 25 mils per year. Corrosion rates of about 25 mils per year were considered acceptable for this application. The corrosion of Type 304L or Type 309Cb stainless steel in a solution of nitric and hydrofluoric acids conthining a reducing agent was decreased to less than 20 mils per year by the addition of either aluminum or silver ions. Very small concentrations of either cupric or ferric ions lowered the corrosion rale of 309Cb stainless to less than five mils per year in the same solution. (auth).

Book Corrosion of High Ni Cr Alloys and Type 304L Stainless Steel in HNO3 HF

Download or read book Corrosion of High Ni Cr Alloys and Type 304L Stainless Steel in HNO3 HF written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteen alloys were evaluated as possible materials of construction for steam heating coils, the dissolver vessel, and the off-gas system of proposed facilities to process thorium and uranium fuels. Commercially available alloys were found that are satisfactory for all applications. With thorium fuel, which requires HNO3-HF for dissolution, the best alloy for service at 130°C when complexing agents for fluoride are used is Inconel 690; with no complexing agents at 130°C, Inconel 671 is best. At 95°C, six other alloys tested would be adequate: Haynes 25, Ferralium, Inconel 625, Type 304L stainless steel, Incoloy 825, and Haynes 20 (in order of decreasing preference); based on composition, six untested alloys would also be adequate. The ions most effective in reducing fluoride corrosion were the complexing agents Zr/sup 4 +/ and Th/sup 4 +/; Al/sup 3 +/ was less effective. With uranium fuel, modestly priced Type 304L stainless steel is adequate. Corrosion will be most severe in HNO3-HF used occasionally for flushing and in solutions of HNO3 and corrosion products (ferric and dichromate ions). HF corrosion can be minimized by complexing the fluoride ion and by passivation of the steel with strong nitric acid. Corrosion caused by corrosion products can be minimized by operating at lower temperatures.
