The variation of salinity levels In the open and within the building envelope with distance from both surf and bay beaches is defined. A research program designed to permit the life prediction of corrodible building components is outlined. The program consists of a series of exposures In a salt spray/climate chamber. Coupons of zinc, galvanized steel and 'Zincalume'-coated steel were directly exposed, while brick ties manufactured from stainless steel and galvanized steel were embedded in mortar and exposed. The results of the first test are presented. These results indicate that high corrosion rates occur at high humidities but moderate chloride levels. The corrosion rate of the embedded galvanized steel was an order of magnitude higher than that of the directly exposed galvanized steel.
