Book excerpt: Fatigue crack propagation studies were conducted on three new high-strength structural steels: 9Ni-4Co-0.20C, quenched and tempered; 10Ni-2Cr-1Mo-8Co, dual strengthened; and 13Cr-8Ni-2Mo, precipitation-hardened stainless. The yield strengths of these steels ranged from 176 to 193 ksi. Notched cantilever-bend specimens of each steel were cycled zero-to-tension in two environments - room air and 3.5% NaCl salt water. Fatigue crack growth rates were measured experimentally and correlated with the crack tip stress-intensity factor range. The results indicate that these new steels possess greater resistance to fatigue crack propagation and less sensitivity to environment than previously studied steels of comparable strength. Book excerpt: The useful life of steel structures that contain crack-like defects and that are subjected to cyclic loads in an aggressive environment is determined primarily by the time required for the defects to grow from subcritical dimensions to the critical size at which unstable fracture occurs. For these structures, subcritical crack growth is caused either by fatigue or by corrosion fatigue. Thus, as part of a long-range program to establish the necessary relations for predicting the corrosion-fatigue behavior of structural steels, the corrosion-fatigue crack-growth rates in four high-yield-strength steels (140 to 184 ksi) were investigated under sinusoidal loading at 6 cycles per minute in a 3 percent solution of sodium chloride. The results were analyzed by using linear-elastic fracture-mechanics concepts and were compared with fatigue-crack-propagation data obtained in a room-temperature air environment.

The results were analyzed by using linear-elastic fracture mechanics methods and were compared with fatigue-crack-propagation data obtained in a room-temperature air environment. The results showed that the threshold stress-intensity factor below which crack growth does not occur in statiscally loaded specimens decreased with increased yield strength. The fatigue-crack-growth rates per cycle in the steels investigated in an air environment and below KIscc in the room-temperature solution of sodium chloride can be represented by the equation dadN=D(t)(?KI)n where n was equal to 2.7. The function D(t), which is a measure of the corrosion-fatigue susceptibility of the material, increased with increased yield strength. Fatigue-crack-growth rates below KIscc were accelerated by a factor of 2 when the 130-ksi yield-strength material was tested at 6 cpm in the sodium chloride solution. Under identical test conditions, the corrosion fatigue-crack-growth rates in the 180-ksi yield-strength material were five to six times higher than the fatigue crack-growth rates in air environment. Corrosion-fatigue crack-growth data below KIscc were not obtained for the 220-ksi yield-strength material because of the high susceptibility of this material to the test environment (KIscc=10.5ksiin., or 11.5 MN/m3/2).

Book excerpt: Fatigue-crack growth is a potential failure mechanism that can be strongly influenced by a salt-water environment. This paper discusses fatigue-crack-propagation studies performed on three high-strength structural steels: 9Ni-4Co-0.25C, 12Ni 180-grade maraging, and 18Ni 200-grade maraging. Each steel underwent a program of fatigue cycling in two environments, a "dry" environment consisting of ambient room air and a "wet" environment consisting of 3.5 percent NaCl salt water. Relationships for fatigue-crack-growth rates as a function of the fracture mechanics stress-intensity factor (K) were obtained experimentally for each steel in both environments. The engineering significance of these relationships is presented in terms of stress levels and flaw sizes relevant to the steels under investigation. The results of this work indicate that, in an air environment, the fatigue-crack-growth rate correlates with the stress-intensity-factor range according to the power-law relationship, da/dN = C (?K)m. Fatigue-crack growth in each of the steels was accelerated by the salt-water environment. However, the environmental response varied significantly, depending upon the material and the ?K level. The lower-toughness steel was less affected by environment, and environmental effects in all the steels diminished with increasing ?K levels. No correlation was observed between fatigue-crack-growth behavior in the salt-water environment and the stress-corrosion-cracking parameter (K Iscc) obtained on the same materials.

As such, it is a comprehensive blend of fundamental knowledge and technical tools to address the issues of fatigue and corrosion. The book initiates with a systematic description of fatigue from a phenomenological point of view, since the early signs of submicroscopic damage in few surface grains and continues describing, step by step, how these precursors develop to become mechanically small cracks and, eventually, macrocracks whose growth is governed by fracture mechanics. But fracture mechanics is also introduced to analyze stress corrosion and corrosion assisted fatigue in a rather advanced fashion. The author dedicates a particular attention to corrosion starting with an electrochemical treatment that mechanical engineers with a rather limited knowledge of electrochemistry will well digest without any pain. The electrochemical introduction is considered an essential requirement to the full understanding of corrosion that is essentially an electrochemical process. All stress corrosion aspects are treated, from the generalized film rupture-anodic dissolution process that is the base of any corrosion mechanism to the aggression occurring in either mechanically or thermally sensitized alloys up to the universe of hydrogen embrittlement, which is described in all its possible modes of appearance. Multiaxial fatigue and out-of-phase loading conditions are treated in a rather comprehensive manner together with damage progression and accumulation that are not linear processes. Load spectra are analyzed also in the frequency domain using the Fourier transform in a rather elegant fashion full of applications that are generally not considered at all in fatigue textbooks, yet they deserve a special place and attention. The issue of fatigue cannot be treated without a probabilistic approach unless the designer accepts the shame of one-out-of-two pieces failure. The reader is fully introduced to the most promising and advanced analytical tools that do not require a normal or lognormal distribution of the experimental data, which is the most common case in fatigue. But the probabilistic approach is also used to introduce the fundamental issue of process volume that is the base of any engineering application of fatigue, from the probability of failure to the notch effect, from the metallurgical variability and size effect to the load type effect. Fractography plays a fundamental role in the post mortem analysis of fatigue and corrosion failures since it can unveil the mystery encrypted in any failure.
