Book Evaluation of Corrosion Erosion Behavior of Various Ceramic Materials

Download or read book Evaluation of Corrosion Erosion Behavior of Various Ceramic Materials written by J. W. Adams and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baseline and simulated environment post-exposure test results of fourteen candidate ceramic materials for stationary power-generating gas turbines are presented. The materials studied were various material types of silicon nitride, silicon carbide, aluminum nitride, A1203-Zr02, A1203-SiC, MgA1204 spinel, and SiA1ON. One dynamic (1425 deg C, 305 m/s, 1000 hr) and nine static (1000 deg, 1200 deg, and 1425 deg C for 100, 300, and 1000 hr) exposures were conducted at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center facility of the Department of Energy. The exposure environment was coal-derived fuel gas combustion products created in a fixed-bed gasification system. Post-exposure evaluation involved evaluation of surface chemistry and morphology, weight and dimension change, retained room-temperature strength and fracture surface analysis. Based upon limited testing and the small sample population available, the materials are ranked according to their probable survivability in power turbine applications.

Book Tribocorrosion of Passive Metals and Coatings

Download or read book Tribocorrosion of Passive Metals and Coatings written by D Landolt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-10-12 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tribocorrosion causes the degradation or alteration of materials through the combined action of corrosion and wear. It limits the performance and life-time of installations, machines and devices with moving parts, and controls certain manufacturing processes such as chemical–mechanical polishing. The effects of tribocorrosion are most pronounced on passive metals which owe their corrosion resistance to a thin protecting oxide film. Most corrosion-resistant engineering alloys belong to this category. This book provides an introduction to the developing field of tribocorrosion and an overview of the latest research. Part one reviews basic notions of corrosion and tribology, before presenting the most recent results on the growth and structure of passive oxide films. Tribocorrosion mechanisms under fretting, sliding and erosion conditions, respectively, are then discussed. Part two focuses on methods for measuring and preventing tribocorrosion. It includes chapters on electrochemical techniques, the design of tribocorrosion test equipment, data evaluation and the optimisation of materials’ properties for tribocorrosion systems. Part three presents a selection of tribocorrosion problems in engineering and medicine. Three chapters address the tribocorrosion of medical implants including test methods and clinical implications. Other chapters examine tribocorrosion issues in nuclear power plants, marine environments, automotive cooling circuits, elevated-temperature metal working and chemical–mechanical polishing. With its distinguished editors and international team of expert contributors Tribocorrosion of passive metals and coatings is an invaluable reference tool for engineers and researchers in industry and academia confronted with tribocorrosion problems. Comprehensively reviews current research on the tribocorrosion of passive metals and coatings, with particular reference to the design of tribocorrosion test equipment, data evaluation and the optimisation of materials’ properties for tribocorrosion systems Chapters discuss tribocorrosion mechanisms under fretting, sliding and erosion conditions before focussing on methods for measuring and preventing tribocorrosion Includes a comprehensive selection of tribocorrosion problems in engineering and medicine, such as the tribocorrosion of medical implants, and tribocorrosion issues in nuclear power plants, marine environments, automotive cooling circuits and elevated-temperature metal working

Book Corrosion Erosion Behavior of Silicon Nitride and Silicon Carbide Ceramics Gas Turbine Experience

Download or read book Corrosion Erosion Behavior of Silicon Nitride and Silicon Carbide Ceramics Gas Turbine Experience written by R. Nathan Katz and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramic materials, silicon nitride and silicon carbide in particular, are under intensive engineering development for gas turbine applications. One of the factors which has encouraged this line of development is the excellent corrosion/erosion behavior of these ceramics. This paper will briefly review some of the fundamental mechanisms and critical materials properties thought to govern the corrosion/erosion behavior of ceramics and point out where these differ from those of metals. A review of available erosion, corrosion, and combined corrosion/erosion testing of silicon nitrides and silicon carbides will be presented. While the results of these tests are quite encouraging it is evident that there is a lack of data at high temperatures, in atmospheres containing multiple contaminates, and there is virtually no long-duration testing information. The author will suggest areas of research required to further our understanding of corrosion/erosion behavior and phenomena, and provide a more extensive data base for future engineering applications. Book Hot Corrosion erosion Testing of Materials for Application to Advanced Power Conversion Systems Using Coal derived Fuels

Download or read book Hot Corrosion erosion Testing of Materials for Application to Advanced Power Conversion Systems Using Coal derived Fuels written by M. S. Nutkis and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressurized fluidized bed combustion offers a potentially efficient technique for energy production by combusting coal in an environmentally acceptable manner. This program entails the operation of the Exxon Pressurized Fluidized Bed Coal Combustion Miniplant to provide a test site for the exposure of specimens of potential fireside heat exchanger alloys and gas turbine materials. The installation and shakedown phase of this program has been completed. Heat exchanger specimen probes and turbine blade materials were exposed to pressurized fluidized bed coal combustion conditions for tests of 17 hours and 100 hours. Temperature control of the 21 heat exchanger probes was excellent, and the probe specimens showed no visible signs of attack after 117 hours of exposure. With the aid of 4 methane injection nozzles in the off gas piping, the temperature at the turbine test section was maintained at 1550°F. During the shakedown tests the flue gas flow decreased to a lower level than intended because of refractory plugs in the pressure reducing station. Temperature at the turbine test section had to be lowered during the run to maintain 9 atm pressure in the combustor. This was accomplished by ceasing methane injection and eventually lowering the combustor temperature. The airfoil-shaped turbine specimens experienced a regular pattern of fly ash deposition.

Book Mechanisms of Erosion corrosion of Metals and Their Oxide Scales

Download or read book Mechanisms of Erosion corrosion of Metals and Their Oxide Scales written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of small particles of coal and char in moving reactive gases at elevated temperatures in coal gasifiers creates a hostile environment that has caused surface degradation of metallic components in pilot plant operations. The objective of the work reported herein is to provide some insight into the basic mechanisms of degradation that occur when a small particle impacts on a bare metal surface or on one that contains a thin oxide scale. It is hoped that understanding how material is removed from the surface will provide the basis for selecting operating conditions and developing more resistant materials that will result in less materials degradation. The work to date indicates that significant differences in erosion behavior do occur as the result of different elevated temperature corrosion conditions forming different scale and interface compositions and morphologies. Generally the differences were relatively minor. However, under conditions of combined erosion-corrosion, these differences could become important. Even though the scales were thin and on ductile matrices, their erosion behavior variation with impingment angle was that of a brittle rather than a ductile material. The use of erosion tests to study the adherence of various scales has some merit. However interpretation of some of the smaller differences could be difficult.

Book Corrosion and Mechanical Behavior of Metal Materials

Download or read book Corrosion and Mechanical Behavior of Metal Materials written by Ming Liu and published by Mdpi AG. This book was released on 2023-04-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Colleagues, Many structural metal materials work under the coupling condition of the load and corrosion environment. Therefore, it is very necessary to study the corrosion and mechanical behavior of metal structural materials. The corrosion behaviors of metals under the coupling condition of the mechanics and corrosion environment mainly include stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen-induced cracking, corrosion fatigue, erosion corrosion, wear corrosion, etc. From the macroscopic or microscopic point of view, these corrosion damages all involve the fracture process, and fractures are caused by environmental factors, also known as environmental fractures. Thus, this Special Issue, "Corrosion and Mechanical Behavior of Metal Materials", will focus on the environmental fracture behavior of metal materials, including but not limited to experimental, computational, or theoretical studies on environmental corrosion fracture of high-strength metal materials.
