Book Corroborative Measurements of the Transverse Motion of a Gun Tube During Firing

Download or read book Corroborative Measurements of the Transverse Motion of a Gun Tube During Firing written by T. E. Simkins and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents new measurements of transverse motion of the 30 mm (GAU-8) gun tube first reported at the Third Gun Dynamics Symposium in 1982. The measurements are unique and fully corroborated through the use of two independent measuring devices. In particular, the work discusses three items of interest. First, there definitely exists a 'base-line' transverse tube movement, the cause of which has yet to be determined. The magnitude of this motion is of the same order as that due to other causes intentionally introduced for study. Second, intentionally introducing an eccentric breech mass produces muzzle displacements in good agreement with theoretical models, provided the 'base-line' component is accounted for. Finally, the muzzle rotation created by the moving projectile - though insignificant when operating alone - is strongly coupled to, and capable of greatly modifying the rotation due to other causes. This coupling does not appear to strongly affect muzzle displacement. It is concluded that predictions from gun dynamics models which agree well with displacement measurements, may err greatly when used to predict muzzle rotation, the quality of which is of central interest.

Book An Investigation of the Characteristics of Flechette Rounds when Fired from a Multibarreled Test Gun

Download or read book An Investigation of the Characteristics of Flechette Rounds when Fired from a Multibarreled Test Gun written by S. S. Lentz and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental firings were conducted with a five-barreled test gun firing Cal. 0.22, single flechette rounds in single shots, in salvos, and in a burst at a rate of fire of 2680 rds/min. Measurements were made of action time and velocity; dispersions were obtained of the flechettes and sabots at several locations down range and photographs were taken of the flechettes and sabots at two positions along their trajectories. Observations from the targets and photographs indicate that most flechettes yaw in flight regardless of how they are fired. Those fired in salvos, or in a burst, yaw much more than those fired in single shots. Yaw may be induced by transverse forces set up by the motion of the gun tubes, blast from adjacent muzzles, shock waves from other flechettes and interference from the sabots. (Author).

Book Grave Misfortune The USS Indianapolis Tragedy

Download or read book Grave Misfortune The USS Indianapolis Tragedy written by Richard A. Hulver and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dedicated to the Sailors and Marines who lost their lives on the final voyage of USS Indianapolis and to those who survived the torment at sea following its sinking. plus the crews that risked their lives in rescue ships. The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was a decorated World War II warship that is primarily remembered for her worst 15 minutes. . This ship earned ten (10) battle stars for her service in World War II and was credited for shooting down nine (9) enemy planes. However, this fame was overshadowed by the first 15 minutes July 30, 1945, when she was struck by two (2) torpedoes from Japanese submarine I-58 and sent to the bottom of the Philippine Sea. The sinking of Indianapolis and the loss of 880 crew out of 1,196 --most deaths occurring in the 4-5 day wait for a rescue delayed --is a tragedy in U.S. naval history. This historical reference showcases primary source documents to tell the story of Indianapolis, the history of this tragedy from the U.S. Navy perspective. It recounts the sinking, rescue efforts, follow-up investigations, aftermath and continuing communications efforts. Included are deck logs to better understand the ship location when she sunk and testimony of survivors and participants. For additional historical publications produced by the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command, please check out these resources here: https://bookstore.gpo.gov/agency/naval-history-heritage-command Year 2016 marked the 71st anniversary of the sinking and another spike in public attention on the loss -- including a big screen adaptation of the story, talk of future films, documentaries, and planned expeditions to locate the wreckage of the warship.
