Download or read book Essays in the History of Canadian Law written by George Blain Baker and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1999-12-15 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume in the Osgoode Society's distinguished series on the history of Canadian law is a tribute to Professor R.C.B. Risk, one of the pioneers of Canadian legal history and for many years regarded as its foremost authority. The fifteen original essays are by notable scholars, some of whom were students of Professor Risk, and represent some of the best and most original work in the area of Canadian legal history. They cover a number of important topics that range from the form of the criminal trial in the eighteenth century, to debates over the meaning of property in the nineteenth, and to lawyer/poet Tom MacInnes's views on the law of aboriginal title in the twentieth century.
Download or read book Sir Oliver Mowat written by A. Margaret Evans and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1992-12-15 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few political leaders in Ontario's history have had as lasting an impact on the province, and perhaps on the nation, as Oliver Mowat, premier from 1872 to 1896. Under his leadership Ontario flourished economically, socially, and politically. Among the many political skills that Mowat brought to office, one of the most useful was pragmatism. He was able to establish a rock-solid style that appealed to a wide spectrum of the electorate: rural and urban, Catholic and Protestant. He was also adept at redrawing constituency boundaries and extending the franchise at opportune times. Margaret Evans's biography of Mowat is in some ways the story of a golden age in the province's history. During this period Ontario modernized agriculture and industry, opened the north, developed natural resources, addressed social problems, and accepted trade unions. Above all, it established itself as the dominant province in Confederation. This last was accomplished through a stubborn struggle with Ottawa. John A. Macdonald fought hard against Mowat's provincial-rights moves, and referred to the premier as 'the little tyrant.' But Mowat prevailed. The Canada that emerged was a less centralized state than Macdonald had ever wanted; the provinces had substantially more power. A century later, that legacy of diffused power has been at the centre of much of Canada's constitutional debate.

Download or read book Federalism in Canada and Australia written by W.H. Heick and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comparison of the history and politics of two sister societies, comparing Canada with Australia, rather than, as is traditional, with the United Kingdom or the United States. It is representative of a particular interest in promoting more contact and exchange among Canadian and Australian scholars who were investigating various features of the two societies. Because some of them were individually involved in aspects of federalist studies, an examination of the early evolution of federalism in what once were the two sister dominions seemed quite an appropriate area in which to begin comparisons. The book discusses Canadian federalism from about 1864 to 1880 and Australian federalism from about 1897 to 1914. It examines the background and changes wrought on early Canadian federalism and early Australian federalism.
