Book Lincoln and the Triumph of the Nation

Download or read book Lincoln and the Triumph of the Nation written by Mark E. Neely Jr. and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2011-11-21 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War placed the U.S. Constitution under unprecedented--and, to this day, still unmatched--strain. In Lincoln and the Triumph of the Nation, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Mark Neely examines for the first time in one book the U.S. Constitution and its often overlooked cousin, the Confederate Constitution, and the ways the documents shaped the struggle for national survival. Previous scholars have examined wartime challenges to civil liberties and questions of presidential power, but Neely argues that the constitutional conflict extended to the largest questions of national existence. Drawing on judicial opinions, presidential state papers, and political pamphlets spiced with the everyday immediacy of the partisan press, Neely reveals how judges, lawyers, editors, politicians, and government officials, both North and South, used their constitutions to fight the war and save, or create, their nation. Lincoln and the Triumph of the Nation illuminates how the U.S. Constitution not only survived its greatest test but emerged stronger after the war. That this happened at a time when the nation's very existence was threatened, Neely argues, speaks ultimately to the wisdom of the Union leadership, notably President Lincoln and his vision of the American nation.

Book The Three Governors Controversy

Download or read book The Three Governors Controversy written by Charles S. Bullock and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The death of Georgia governor-elect Eugene Talmadge in late 1946 launched a constitutional crisis that ranks as one of the most unusual political events in U.S. history: the state had three active governors at once, each claiming that he was the true elected official. This is the first full-length examination of that episode, which wasn't just a crazy quirk of Georgia politics (though it was that) but the decisive battle in a struggle between the state's progressive and rustic forces that had continued since the onset of the Great Depression. In 1946, rural forces aided by the county unit system, Jim Crow intimidation of black voters, and the Talmadge machine's "loyal 100,000" voters united to claim the governorship. In the aftermath, progressive political forces in Georgia would shrink into obscurity for the better part of a generation. In this volume is the story of how the political, governmental, and Jim Crow social institutions not only defeated Georgia's progressive forces but forestalled their effectiveness for a decade and a half.

  • Pages : 134 pages

Download or read book Rebel Georgia written by F. N. Boney and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1861 a state convention voted by a narrow margin to secede from the Union. In this popular treatment of the Civil War in Georgia, F. N. Boney tells the story of how the strain of this modern, total war relentlessly ravaged the state's resources and weakened its resolve to fight for the Confederate cause. Heavy casualties on the battlefield and accelerating inflation on the home front combined to undermine the morale of the Confederacy and the citizens of Georgia. Narrating Sherman's pivotal capture of Atlanta on 2 September 1864 and his crushing march to the sea, which ended with the fall of Savannah in late December, Boney recounts how the Confederacy's slow death affected the psyches of Georgians black and white. In the process, Boney shows how rebel Georgia gradually overcame its grief and was eventually reunited with the north in a national reconciliation.
