Book Correlation of Pavement Serviceability Rating with International Roughness Index

Download or read book Correlation of Pavement Serviceability Rating with International Roughness Index written by Gulen Sedat and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indiana Dept. of Transportation (INDOT) is using a pavement management system to identify roads for periodic maintenance and re-construction. The present serviceability index (PSI), pavement riding comfort index, is one of the major factors in selecting roads for rehabilitation. This study searched statistically realistic models for PSI and international roughness index (IRI) correlation. Ten random raters rated one mile long test sections at three roughness levels for both concrete and bituminous pavements. Two nearly identical cars were used and each rater rated the 20 test sections as a driver and as a front seat passenger. Each rater assigned a PSI value between 0 and 5 (0 for worst, 5 for best) and also marked whether the ride of the section was accepatable.

Book Pavement Asset Management

Download or read book Pavement Asset Management written by Ralph Haas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-04-27 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive and practical, Pavement Asset Management provides an essential resource for educators, students and those in public agencies and consultancies who are directly responsible for managing road and airport pavements. The book is comprehensive in the integration of activities that go into having safe and cost-effective pavements using the best technologies and management processes available. This is accomplished in seven major parts, and 42 component chapters, ranging from the evolution of pavement management to date requirements to determining needs and priority programming of rehabilitation and maintenance, followed by structural design and economic analysis, implementation of pavement management systems, basic features of working systems and finally by a part on looking ahead. The most current methodologies and practical applications of managing pavements are described in this one-of-a-kind book. Real world up-to-date examples are provided, as well as an extensive list of references for each part.

Book Public Perception of Pavement Rideability

Download or read book Public Perception of Pavement Rideability written by Scott Everett Arterburn and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To evaluate the public perception of pavements in Colorado, 24 individuals were driven over 69 pavement sections in the Denver Metro area. These individuals were asked to rate the pavement based on rideability and to determine whether that ride was acceptable or unacceptable. The 69 pavement sections that were rated include: 51 bituminous and 18 concrete sections, urban and rural roads, and 35 and 55 mph speed limits. These ratings were then scaled from 0 to 5, with 5 being the best ride. Using regression analysis, the scaled ratings were compared to the roughness of the pavement. The pavement roughness was measured by the Colorado Department of Highways using a Mays Index. The conclusions are: for bituminous pavements 10% of the public is unhappy at a present serviceability index of 2.50; for concrete pavements 10% of the public is unhappy at a present serviceability index of 2.21; and the public will tolerate rougher roads at slower speeds.

Dyer and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project is the first phase of a proposed larger research effort whose goal is twofold: 1) to determine effective guidelines for collecting and processing road profiles; and 2) to determine, insofar as possible, the specific causes of the poor repeatability in the data obtained by the present Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Pavement Management System.

Book Evaluating the Relationship Between Pavement Roughness and Crash Incidences

Download or read book Evaluating the Relationship Between Pavement Roughness and Crash Incidences written by Kuvleshay Patel and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing number of crashes has been a major concern to safety engineers and planners nationwide. The State of North Carolina, which has seen more than 220,000 reported crashes per year during last three years, is no exception in this regard. The state and local agencies are spending a lot of money to improve road safety and mobility on North Carolina roads. Several studies have been carried out to better understand the causes of road crashes to pro- actively apply safety treatments. Pavement roughness is a factor that influences ride quality. A low value of pavement roughness may result in low friction or rolling resistance whereas a high value may affect ride quality and reduces the ability to control the vehicle at high speeds. Thus, it should not be too low or too high. This study focuses on evaluating the relationship between pavement roughness and occurrence of the road crashes. Pavement profile data collected by NCDOT (North Carolina Department of Transportation) using laser profilometer on 5 selected corridors in used to evaluate the relationship. Pavement roughness is determined in terms of IRI (International Roughness Index) using ProVAL (Profile Viewing and Analysis) software. Scatter plots and bivariate analysis indicate that a reasonably strong relationship exists between pavement roughness and crashes. In general, results show that the number of crashes decreases as pavement roughness increases. Multivariate analysis considering predictor variables such as traffic volume data, length, and roadway features data along with pavement roughness showed mixed results.
