Book Association Between Dental Caries and Socioeconomic Status Among One to Five year old Native American Children

Download or read book Association Between Dental Caries and Socioeconomic Status Among One to Five year old Native American Children written by Miranda Davis and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: he 2010 Indian Health Service (IHS) oral health basic screening survey (BSS) of oral health status for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) children ages 1 through 5 years nationwide found substantial differences in caries prevalence between different IHS service areas. The reasons for these differences are not well understood. Socioeconomic status (SES) may be a related factor, as it is well established that SES is a strong predictor of caries prevalence. However, it is possible that some IHS service areas have managed to achieve relatively low caries prevalence despite low SES. This observational study examined associations between caries prevalence among preschool-aged AI/AN children and county-level SES to identify service areas in which caries prevalence was not well explained by SES.Two sources of data were used for this study. Caries prevalence data among children ages 1 through 5 years from 76 study sites was drawn from the 2010 IHS BSS. Demographic, economic and social information describing the AI/AN population in the county for each of the 76 sites were selected from the American Community Survey. Associations between county SES characteristics and study site caries prevalence were examined using correlation and linear regression analyses. Of the 76 study sites evaluated during the 2010 IHS BSS, caries outcomes and SES indicators varied widely. The percentage of children having experienced dental decay ranged from 14% to 88%, and percentage of children with untreated decay ranged from 0.5% to 74%. Percentage of decayed teeth overall ranged from 2.7% to 37.9%. Median annual income of the county ranged from $17,778 to $63,000; unemployment ranged from 6.4% to 32.9%, and percentage of the AI/AN population with a bachelor's degree ranged from 3% to 22.5%. Median income, unemployment, and educational all showed some correlation with caries prevalence. Linear regression analysis found that of the SES indicators studied, the SES indicator most predictive of caries prevalence was the percentage of the population having attained a bachelor's degree or a higher level of college education (part R2 11% - 22%). Multivariate linear regression analysis adjusting for median income, % unemployment, and % bachelor's degree found that these three SES indicators taken together can explain 29% of the variation observed in percent of teeth with decay, 21% of the variation in any decay experience, and 16% of the variation in any untreated decay. For many study sites, caries prevalence was much higher or lower than what would be predicted based on SES indicators. Sites with the highest and lowest observed caries prevalence tended to also be the sites with highest and lowest observed-predicted values: the healthiest and least healthy areas remained the healthiest and least healthy even after accounting for SES. Caries prevalence within the IHS BSS communities studied was not always well explained by SES, indicating that other factors may be contributing to caries prevalence. These communities should be studied further to discover what factors may be more related to caries prevalence.

Book Early Childhood Oral Health

Download or read book Early Childhood Oral Health written by Joel H. Berg and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dental caries has been called a “silent epidemic” and is the most prevalent chronic disease affecting children. Though much has been written on the science and practice of managing this disease, publications are diverse in their loci, preventing easy access to the reader. Early Childhood Oral Health coalesces all the important information related to this topic in a comprehensive reference for students, academics, and practitioners. This second edition expands the scope of the first and puts an additional focus on interprofessional and global efforts that are necessary to manage the growing disease crisis and screening and risk assessment efforts that have expanded with the boom of new technologies. With updated references and incorporating the latest research, chapters address the biology and epidemiology of caries, the clinical management of early childhood caries, risk assessment, and early diagnosis. Other topics include public health approaches to managing caries worldwide, implementation of new caries prevention programs, fluoride regimens, and community programs, and family oral health education. Brand new are four chapters on the medical management of early childhood caries, considerations for children with special needs, interprofessional education and practice, and how the newest policy issues and the Affordable Care Act affect dental care. A must-read for pediatric dentists, cariologists, public health dentists, and students in these fields, Early Childhood Oral Health is also relevant for pediatricians and pediatric nursing specialists worldwide.

Download or read book Oral Health Status in Infants and Toddlers Enrolled in Early Head Start in Seattle and Factors Related to Their Oral Health written by Ana Lucia Seminario and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To assess dental caries by the level (prevalence) and the degree (mean dmfs) of the disease, as well as to investigate which factors regarding parents' behaviors related to oral health, oral hygiene and diet may be associated with dental caries among low-income urban preschoolers in Seattle. Children (n=155) aged 6 to 36 months and their parents from State assistance programs for low-income families participated in this cross-sectional study in Seattle, USA. The presence of dental caries was measured by one examiner using the World Health Organization diagnostic criteria. Information on knowledge, attitudes and behaviors towards oral health, oral diet and oral hygiene included breast/bottle feeding, frequency of sweet and sugary drink intake, frequency of between-meals sweet intake, frequency of bedtime food intake. Other variables also evaluated were demographics, such as children's age, gender and race/ethnicity; parents' age, education and marital status; number of children per household, history of dental examination, and history of dental pain. Caries prevalence and mean dmfs were calculated. Associations among predictors and oral health status (dental caries Y/N) were estimated using unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression. Differences in dmfs distribution and predictors were evaluated using multiple linear regression. All regression models took clustering within sites into account. The prevalence of dental caries was 20.65% and the mean dmfs was 1.22(SD: 4.95). After adjusting for age (p

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2016 in the subject Medicine - Dentistry, , language: English, abstract: Oral health is related to general health and quality of life, which emphasizes the importance of retaining good functional dentition. It is associated with development of healthy personality, perception and enables an individual to speak, eat and socialize without active disease and discomfort. The role of nutrition is also related to poor oral health affecting growth and cognitive development that leads to medical complications of untreated diseases, and result in poor social outcomes. Despite the great improvement in oral health, many countries still encounter oral diseases which are widely prevalent, more so in the developing countries like India. Dental diseases, such as Dental caries, Periodontal disease and Oral mucosal lesions, are the major public health problem throughout the world with the high prevalence due to altered life style and eating habits. The burden of Oral disease is particularly high for the disadvantageous and poor population groups in both developing and developed countries. Dental caries is an epidemic disease affecting humans of all ages in regions of most common disease of children. Among all the dental diseases, the prevalence of dental caries in India is increasing referred as “Disease of civilization.” According to Centre for Disease Control & Prevention, dental caries is perhaps the most prevalent infectious disease. Although it is well understood and preventable but still a global problem among children and young adults. More than 40% of children have caries by the time they reach kindergarten.

Book Diet Food Insecurity and Dental Caries Prevalence and Severity in Children Ages 2 11

Download or read book Diet Food Insecurity and Dental Caries Prevalence and Severity in Children Ages 2 11 written by Nadine Susan Braunstein and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Background . Dental caries is the most common chronic childhood disease. The association of diet, food insecurity and caries is unknown. Objectives . To evaluate the associations of diet quality, food insecurity and caries prevalence and severity in children ages 2-11. To examine consistencies in associations between dietary quality indicators and dental caries status in young children in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Methods . Children ages 2-5 (n=801) and 6-11 years (n=1097) from the 2001-2002 who had dental exam, food security, and diet data were studied. Logistic and linear regression was used to explore relationships between caries status and diet exposures and food security status, controlling for age, race, poverty, household smoking, dental visits and health insurance coverage. Diet quality indicators and dental caries status were compared between NHANES 2001-2002 and NHANES III [1988-1994] (n=4119). Results . Children ages 2-5 in the upper quartile of diet quality were 69% less likely to have early childhood caries (ECC) (OR 0.31, 95% CI 0.18, 0.56) compared with those in the lowest quartile. Young children living in food insecure households had higher caries prevalence than food secure children (38.2% vs. 23.0%, p =0.004) and a 1.8 greater odds of caries (95% CI 1.09, 2.97). In children ages 6-11, multiple linear regression models identified specific eating behaviors (total number of meals and snacks, soda consumption and number of days/week school lunch eaten) as being significantly associated with the number of decayed and filled primary teeth (dft) (p

Book excerpt: Dental Caries is a major new work on a subject of vital concern to all dentists. It builds on the work of two former books, Textbook of Clinical Cariology and Fluoride in Dentistry, to present a definitive resource on caries prevention and treatment. The management of dental caries is central to daily work in dental offices because caries is ubiquitous in all populations, lesion development continues lifelong and caries is the most common cause of tooth loss around the world. The book's logical structure consists of four parts, covering: The Disease; Diagnosis; Prevention, Non-Operative and Operative Treatment and Prognosis. It provides a clear understanding of the disease process, be it at an individual or population level. The Editors are joined by 28 expert authors who have contributed a wealth of chapters, ranging from the role of fluorides to restoring the tooth. Careful balance between prophylaxis and surgical intervention guides the reader through the maze of treatment decisions, while the breadth of the book reflects diverse, and sometimes controversial, opinion on dental caries.
