Book excerpt: Elementary and middle school students' sense of self-efficacy-their belief in their abilities to achieve at desirable levels on school-related tasks-has been empirically found to be significantly related to the school climate in which it is nurtured. A paucity of research exists about the relationship between self-efficacy and school climate among high school students, however. This gap in the research is problematic as self-efficacy and school climate are important correlates of student achievement and both begin to decline as students move through middle school and into high school. This study examines the association between high school students' perceptions of a triad of widely adopted domains of school climate-teaching and learning, interpersonal relationships, and the institutional environment of the school-and their beliefs in three complementary domains of self-efficacy-academic, emotional, and social self-efficacy. This cross-sectional correlational study used survey research to capture data on perceptions of school climate and self-efficacy beliefs from 10th- and 11th-graders (N = 60) at an urban high school in Texas. A Spearman's rho correlational analysis revealed a single significant positive correlation with a medium effect size between students' perceptions of the institutional environment domain of school climate and their beliefs in their emotional self-efficacy. The study's findings suggest that other factors may mediate/moderate the relationship between the domains of school climate and self-efficacy under study, although the robustness of these conclusions must be qualified due to sampling issues that arose during the data capture.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, predictive correlational study is to determine if school climate (SC) factors can accurately predict teachers' self-efficacy (TSE) in Oregon public schools. Using social cognitive theory and ecological systems theory as theoretical frameworks for this study, the importance of this research includes, adding Oregon data to the body of knowledge, narrowing the research gap, and a better understanding of SC and TSE that may be applied to improving a school’s climate, school planning, increasing TSE, and retaining teachers. The sample for this study were Oregon public school teachers, 69 of which participated in the study. Two instrumentations were used to collect data, School Climate Index and Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale surveys. The instrumentations were distributed to the teachers by the districts’ superintendents using email. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the collected data. Although SC factors’ collegial leadership, teacher professionalism, and academic press were not significantly correlated to TSE, community engagement was significantly correlated. The statistics show that together, the combined SC factors were significantly correlated to TSE. In conclusion, this study replicated previous studies examining the relationship between SC and TSE and that more research is needed to narrow the research gap. Limitations to this study include improving sample size and diversity. A few recommendations for future research are replicating this study in another state, using different instruments, and examining a reverse relationship to see if SC can be predicted by TSE factors.

Book excerpt: Research has shown the direct relations of student academic motivation and perceptions of school climate with academic achievement. However, most studies examine these relations separately. Research examining the mediating effects of motivation in the linking of school climate perceptions and achievement is limited. In order to address this limitation and contribute to the existing body of research in this area, the current study employed structural equation modeling to (a) examine a model that illustrates the role of motivation in the linking of student perceptions of school climate to academic achievement, and (b) test this model fit across student groups according to gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Analysis used data from the Educational Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS: 2002) that were gathered in a survey conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics and are representative of a national sample of 10th grade students. The results showed that the hypothesized model fit the data acceptably for the overall sample and across student groups. In the overall model, students' perceptions of school climate related significantly with both achievement outcomes. Additionally, perceptions of teacher/student relationship related significantly with all motivation variables. Most group differences were found across ethnicities. In regard to the role motivation might play in the linking of school climate with achievement, self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation appear to play roles in the linking of student perceptions of teacher/student relationship with achievement. It also appears that intrinsic motivation might play a role in the linking of students' perceptions of order/safety/discipline. Both self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation appear to play less of a role in the linking of students' perceptions of fairness/clarity of rules and achievement in reading and math. The study contributes to the research regarding school climate, motivation, and achievement by testing a complex model that examines the role of motivation as a link in the relations between school climate and achievement. Further, the results of the study not only confirm results of past studies and support the theoretical contentions of social cognitive and cognitive evaluation theories by illuminating the significant roles teachers play in supporting student motivation but also shed light on areas that require further study.

Research shows aspects of school climate impact students, parents, teachers and administrators. Climate is global to the school yet exists as a microclimate in the classroom. The influencers of climate and reaction to climate are intertwined; as one influences the others, a variety of perspectives contribute to the overall picture. This study considers the teacher perspective as an indicator of climate as part of overall organizational health. As one must consider organizational health as a pertinent part of overall school climate, this research study utilized a reduced form of the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire designed by Bentley and Rempel to measure teacher morale (1980). Teachers from two schools within one district voluntarily and anonymously answered questions on ten subtopics reflecting their experiences as a teacher in the school environment. This organizational health inventory provided feedback from participants on 10 factors indicating levels of agreement or disagreement on a four point Likert scale (from 4 = strongly agree to 1= strongly disagree). Teachers were also asked to indicate years of experience on the presurvey question, as this study also considered if factors such as teacher years of experience had any impact on teacher perspective of climate. School climate data and data from the averages of standardized PARCC test scores per school and subject area were analyzed using Bivariate Correlation tests, revealing no significant relationship between school climate and student achievement. Although survey data provided potential consideration for areas of improvement for the district in the study, recommendations by the researcher are for further study in a wider scope to increase generalizability.
