Book excerpt: Combining heterotic groups together for development of new heterotic pattern combinations with strong agronomic performance is an important part of modern plant breeding technique. Plant breeders emphasize proper germplasm selection within and between heterotic groups that maximize heterosis potential, genetic diversity, and potential genetic gain. Our objectives were to evaluate eight [BS10(FR)C14, BS11(FR)C14, BSSS(R)C14, BSCB1(R)C14, BS13(S)C9, BSK(HI)C11, BSK(S)C11, and BS26(S)C9] U.S. Corn Belt populations and four [BS16(S)C2, BS28(R)C3, BS29(R)C3, and BS34(S)C4] adapted exotic populations, all improved by recurrent selection, for both cultivar and among crosses agronomic performance. The populations were categorized, and agronomic data considered, based upon their characterization of belonging into either a Stiff-Stalk (BSSS) group or a Non-Stiff-Stalk (non-BSSS) group. Crosses were produced using a Design II mating design (Design II crosses). Maternal and reciprocal effects were evaluated through production of reciprocal crosses (Reciprocal Design II crosses) between the two groups. Based on mean performance, the Design II and Reciprocal Design II crosses were similar for grain yield and other agronomic traits. Individual cultivar performance was dependent on the cultivar and the trait evaluated. The Stiff Stalk BS10(FR)C14 and BSSS(R)C14 (both Reid Yellow Dent) populations had the greatest average yields of 7.55 and 7.46 t ha−1, respectively, in hybrid combination with other evaluated populations. The BS10(FR)C14 x BS29(R)C3 (Suwan-1) cross (7.96 t ha−1) had the highest grain yield, suggesting that this heterotic combination should be evaluated further in future studies. Highest estimated mid-parent heterosis occurred in the BSSS(R)C14 (Reid Yellow Dent) x BSCB1(R)C14 (Lancaster Sure Crop) cross (73%) with an average grain yield of 7.53 t ha−1. A significant grain yield maternal general combining effect ( -0.32 t ha−1) was observed for the BS13(S)C9 population, suggesting that BS13(S)C9 served better as a male parent verses a female parent in cross development. Overall, a Design II analysis was successful in determining population performance, potential new heterotic combinations while maintaining existing heterotic patterns, maternal and reciprocal effects of crosses, and allowing for heterosis expression among Design II and Reciprocal Design II crosses.
