It will consists of a observed solar bursts data, particle detector data and current geomagnetic activity data. They originate in solar activity and variability of many different forms including solar flares, coronal mass ejections, solar wind sector boundaries and coronal hole streams. Variations of geomagnetic field can adversely affect any technical systems which rely on local magnetic field measurements to be taken in the absence of significant geomagnetic variations. Users who are unaware of and thus unprepared for the imminent occurrence of major magnetic field disturbances may conduct operations which later turn out to have been useless and eventually a waste of time and resources. Our project attempts to address geomagnetic storm forecasting by developing a service which gives advance notice of increasing geomagnetic activity and thus enables the affected users to plan and conduct their operations in a more cost-effective way. Information on flux changes for different secondary particles helps to "test" Interplanetary Magnetic Fields (IMF) and magnetosphere for understanding of the level of disturbance and specific mechanisms leading to cutoff rigidity reduction. Our observations of the GMS occurred during 23rd Solar activity cycle demonstrate that Cosmic Ray increase during GMS occurs coherently (or approx. 1 hour in advance) with abrupt changes of the geomagnetic field, sized up by Dst index. To test geomagnetic disturbances models and provide a valuable user-oriented forecast, it is not sufficient to have only global geomagnetic indices. Several studies demonstrate that local geomagnetic indices are better correlated with consequences of severe GMS. Unfortunately in the radius of 1000 km. from mt. Aragats there are no permanently operating geomagnetic observatories or magneto-telluric stations.

Book excerpt: Up to now, most studies were carried out assuming azimuthally symmetric currents, neglecting the well established longitudinal asymmetry in the geomagnetic disturbance at low- and mid-latitudes during magnetic storms. The asymmetric perturbations superposed upon a symmetric field depression has been attributed by several authors to a a longitudinally limited, partial ring current with field aligned closure through the auroral ionosphere (Cummings; Fukushima and Kamide; and references therein). It has been the objective of the research covered by this report to study the effects of such magnetospheric current systems on the propagation of cosmic ray particles through the domain of the earth's magnetosphere. The corresponding results were expected to demonstrate the significance of cosmic ray measurements as an additional tool for magnetospheric studies, especially in modeling the disturbed magnetic field in the magnetosphere. In this report, first the approach to the problem is reviewed in Section 2, and examples of the basic tools needed in the procedure are illustrated in Section 3. Then, in Section 4, the results of a simple study correlating local perturbations in the geomagnetic field with cosmic ray cutoff rigidity variations are discussed. Section 5 contains a summary of a detailed quantitative analysis on the effects of a partial ring current and of field-aligned currents on both cutoff rigidities and asymptotic directions in different latitude regions. In conclusions, the significance of the results obtained in the entire study is discussed in Section 6 for both magnetospheric and cosmic ray research.

Book excerpt: An initial comparison and an expanded study of A indices showed significant differences between Fredericksburg A values (A subscript FRED) and planetary A values (A subscript p), with Ap values higher than the corresponding AFRED value most of the time. A seasonal effect was observed with a greater difference between the indices during the winter than in summer. Because of the difference between the two indices, the Space Environment Services Center changed the geomagnetic forecasts to include estimates and forecasts of both geomagnetic indices. The Air Force Global Weather Central then developed a method of estimating and directly forecasting the planetary A index. The statistical results of this study can be used to insure a reasonable agreement in the forecasts of the two indices.

Book excerpt: The access of charged particles to the earth from space through the geomagnetic field has been of interest since the discovery of the cosmic radiation. The early cosmic ray measurements found that cosmic ray intensity was ordered by the magnetic latitude and the concept of cutoff rigidity was developed. The pioneering work of Stoermer resulted in the theory of particle motion in the geomagnetic field, but the fundamental mathematical equations developed have 'no solution in closed form'. This difficulty has forced researchers to use the 'brute force' technique of numerical integration of individual trajectories to ascertain the behavior of trajectory families or groups. This requires that many of the trajectories must be traced in order to determine what energy (or rigidity) a charged particle must have to penetrate the magnetic field and arrive at a specified position. It turned out the cutoff rigidity was not a simple quantity but had many unanticipated complexities that required many hundreds if not thousands of individual trajectory calculations to solve. The accurate calculation of particle trajectories in the earth's magnetic field is a fundamental problem that limited the efficient utilization of cosmic ray measurements during the early years of cosmic ray research. As the power of computers has improved over the decades, the numerical integration procedure has grown more tractable, and magnetic field models of increasing accuracy and complexity have been utilized. This report is documentation of a general FORTRAN computer program to trace the trajectory of a charged particle of a specified rigidity from a specified position and direction through a model of the geomagnetic field. It was organized and headed by Prof. S. N. Vernov (President of All-Union Section of Cosmic Rays) and Prof. N. V. Pushkov (Director of IZMIRAN); Prof. E. L. Feinberg headed the theoretical part of the Project.

V. 2008 Keywords Aeronomy The term “aeronomy” has been used widely for many decades, but its origin has mostly been lost over the years. It was introduced by Sydney Chapman in a Letter to the Editor, entitled “Some Thoughts on Nomenclature”, in Nature in 1946 (Chapman 1946). In that letter he suggested that aeronomy should replace meteorology, writing that the word “meteor is now irrelevant and misleading”. This proposal was apparently not received with much support so in a short note in Weather in 1953 Chapman (1953)wrote: “If, despite its obvious convenience of brevity in itself and its derivatives, it does not commend itself to aeronomers, I think there is a case for modifying my proposal so that instead of the word being used to signify the study of the atmosphere in general, it should be adopted with the restricted sense of the science of the upper atmosphere, for which there is no convenient short word. ” In a chapter, he wrote in a 1960 book (Chapman 1960), he give his nal and de nitive de nition, by stating that “Aeronomy is the science of the upper region of the atmosphere, where dissociation and ionization are important”. The Workshop on “Comparative Aeronomy” was held at ISSI during the week of June 25–29, 2007.
