Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A sharp, funny grammar guide they’ll actually want to read, from Random House’s longtime copy chief and one of Twitter’s leading language gurus NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY O: The Oprah Magazine • Paste • Shelf Awareness “Essential (and delightful!)”—People We all write, all the time: books, blogs, emails. Lots and lots of emails. And we all want to write better. Benjamin Dreyer is here to help. As Random House’s copy chief, Dreyer has upheld the standards of the legendary publisher for more than two decades. He is beloved by authors and editors alike—not to mention his followers on social media—for deconstructing the English language with playful erudition. Now he distills everything he has learned from the myriad books he has copyedited and overseen into a useful guide not just for writers but for everyone who wants to put their best prose foot forward. As authoritative as it is amusing, Dreyer’s English offers lessons on punctuation, from the underloved semicolon to the enigmatic en dash; the rules and nonrules of grammar, including why it’s OK to begin a sentence with “And” or “But” and to confidently split an infinitive; and why it’s best to avoid the doldrums of the Wan Intensifiers and Throat Clearers, including “very,” “rather,” “of course,” and the dreaded “actually.” Dreyer will let you know whether “alright” is all right (sometimes) and even help you brush up on your spelling—though, as he notes, “The problem with mnemonic devices is that I can never remember them.” And yes: “Only godless savages eschew the series comma.” Chockful of advice, insider wisdom, and fun facts, this book will prove to be invaluable to everyone who wants to shore up their writing skills, mandatory for people who spend their time editing and shaping other people’s prose, and—perhaps best of all—an utter treat for anyone who simply revels in language. Praise for Dreyer’s English “Playful, smart, self-conscious, and personal . . . One encounters wisdom and good sense on nearly every page of Dreyer’s English.”—The Wall Street Journal “Destined to become a classic.”—The Millions “Dreyer can help you . . . with tips on punctuation and spelling. . . . Even better: He’ll entertain you while he’s at it.”—Newsday
Download or read book How to Write Correct English written by K. K. Singh and published by K.K. Publications. This book was released on 2022-03-13 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English has become a global language. In the minds of many worldwide, it guarantees a better life through enhanced social and economic opportunities. As a result, English teachers are in high demand. Some claim that English is attractive because as it has spread throughout the world, it has severed it's who adopt it. Grammar rules and vocabulary can simply be taught to eager learners so they can use English for social and economic advancement. However, learning English is more than mastering a certain number of words and memorizing a set of grammar rules. Although plugging words it is less effective for language learners. Language acquisition studies have discovered that both native and nonnative speakers learn English best not by being taught rules but by interacting with other users of the language, either orally or through print. This interaction introduces a social element to grammar that brings with it hidden social messages. For example, suppose a language learner has been taught that English has a very simple way to make requests: simply say the verb with no subject being expressed, as in "Open the door." After class, the student is carrying a pile of books and comes to a closed door. What would be the reaction of other English speakers if the student were to shout out to someone passing nearby, "Open the door"? The student would probably be considered rude. "Could you please open the door?" which has the form of a question rather than a command, would probably be considered more polite. Suppose an English teacher sees one of her students writing with a crayon rather than a pencil. She helpfully asks, "Don't you have a pencil?" If the student answers "yes," does that mean that the student does or does not have a pencil? The answer depends on which part of the world the student is from.

Book excerpt: Have you ever been frustrated, aggravated, irritated, upset, disturbed, annoyed, bothered, perturbed or discouraged when you are trying to write a decent paragraph in the English language, and suddenly found out that you are not sure of the grammar rules, and it is hard to locate that wizard to tell you once and for all whether you should place a comma here or there? You probably look into your dictionary first and scream out loud or yell at the innocent computer screen because the information you are looking for is not there. Do not panic or dread; help is on the way. This book is an attempt to give you a summary of resources when it comes to grammar in laypersons language. With the index in the back of the book, you will be able to easily and effortlessly locate what you want to look up and find the answer right at your fingertips. Speaking from previous English knowledge, skills, practices, understandings, familiarities and know-how, I realize that sometimes the more grammar books you read, the more confused you get. There are tons of grammar books out there, but upon which one can you rely? There are contradictions constantly when you read more than one grammar book. One book will tell you to use an s after 2005s to execute plurality; others may not recommend the same. In addition, languages are animate. They change all the time. They can get sick and die, and they can have newly generated sounds and words. Language has a life. Born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand, English was taught to me at an early age, but it was taught as a foreign language, where there were only a few English classes per week. I did not have the opportunity of being in a bilingual environment. I struggled and studied hard. My parents made sure that I received a great education. English was taught to me by so many teachers and professors from many different countries, some of whom were not native speakers of the English language. I received many different grammar rules that often confused me, but as I acquired more education, things started to become clearer. As an undergraduate student in Bangkok, I majored in English and double-minored in Linguistics and Psychology. I continued my studies at the University of Illinois Graduate School in Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second Language in the United States. Suddenly, I became an English professor. I received my masters degree in January, and, in the same month, I started teaching at a university. In my profession, there are ESL and EIL. I would like to clarify the abbreviations ESL and EIL. ESL stands for English as a Second Language. EIL stands for English as an International Language. There are also other terms such as ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and EFL (English as a Foreign Language). Even though English is not the most spoken language in the world, it has, indeed, become international, used by hundreds of millions of people every day. So, I will attempt to write this book from an angle of one who has been there and done that. In other words, I have been an ESL/EIL student and an ESL/EIL professor. I still learn new things about English grammar on a daily basis. There are so many rules out there, but it is fun to continue to learn. One should never stop learning, period! I have been teaching ESL/EIL for over three decades. I have always sympathized with my students as I have seen them struggle to gain command of the English language. My background as an ESL/EIL student and as an ESL/EIL teacher, hopefully, has helped my students a great deal. I have also learned a lot from my students. Therefore, this book is a compilation of what I have learned throughout the years, first as a little girl, as an ESL/EIL student, and now as an ESL/EIL professor.

Download or read book Proper English written by Tony Crowley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1991. Debates about the state and status of the English language are rarely debates about language alone. Closely linked to the question, what is proper English? is another, more significant social question: who are the proper English? The texts in this book have been selected to illustrate the process by which particular forms of English usage are erected and validated as correct and standard. At the same time, the texts demonstrate how a certain group of people, and certain sets of cultural practices are privileged as correct, standard and central. Covering a period of three hundred years, these writers, who include Locke, Swift, Webster, James, Newbolt and Marenbon, wrestle with questions of language change and decay, correct and incorrect usage, what to prescribe and proscribe. Reread in the light of recent debates about cultural identity - how is it constructed and maintained? what are its effects? - these texts clearly demonstrate the formative roles of race, class and gender in the construction of proper ‘Englishness' . Tony Crowley's introductory material breaks new ground in rescuing these texts from the academic backwater of the 'history of the language' and in reasserting the central role of language in history.
