Book excerpt: Inspired by Harold Bell Wright's "Mine With the Iron Door," CORRAL DUST begins with Hugh Edwards, the family patriarch, who is wrongly convicted of embezzlement and sentenced to hard time on a chain gang but after a daring escape he hides out in Arizona's Canyon del Oro with the help of an enigmatic character known as Saint Jimmy. When he is finally been exonerated , Hugh meets the hard riding Marta Hillgrove and the other colorful characters in the canyon. Hugh and Marta marry and build an adobe house where they raise four children. The youngest and only son Bobby T Edwards becomes a stuntman in 1930's westerns and takes a stand against the abuse of horses in filming which leads directly to the 'No Animals Were Harmed In the Making Of This Motion Picture' notice we see on movies today. Jane, the film's leading lady stands with Bobby T and follows him back to Arizona where they have two sons. The youngest of the two, Bill Edwards now in his late 70's, still lives in the canyon to this day. Spanning five generations of the Edwards family from Bill's grandfather Hugh to his grandson Wyatt, a Nashville songwriter who's had some wild adventures of his own, there are two things Bill Edwards' tall tales have in common. A sense of place and the ultimate truth that what really matters in life can't be bought or sold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Cowboy State (also known as Wyoming), the Wild West has never died. The West has long been the favored repository of the East?s cultural fantasies, and in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Eastern expectations and demands largely shaped Wyoming's image in this role. Becoming Western shows how the myth of the ?American West? has acted as a force both in history and in individual lives. Liza J. Nicholas interrogates the creation of Western lore by looking at five stories that focus on, respectively, Jack Flagg, a Wyoming legend and the supposed model for Owen Wister?s Virginian; an equestrian statue of Buffalo Bill sculpted by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney; the dude ranch; the creation of the American studies program at Yale; and a campaign for the U.S. Senate. Each story reveals the ways in which the East consciously imagined and manipulated the West and how Wyomingites in turn interpreted this identity, manipulated it, and put it to work for themselves. Becoming Western is a fascinating study of how invented traditions can become potent cultural and political ideology on a local as well as a national level.

Book Western Gunslingers in Fact and on Film

Download or read book Western Gunslingers in Fact and on Film written by Buck Rainey and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Billy the Kid, Wild Bill Hickok, Belle Starr, Wyatt Earp, the Younger Gang, the Dalton-Doolin Gang and Bat Masterson--these real-life lawmen and lawbreakers have been the basis of so many Hollywood Westerns that it has become difficult to discover where the truth ends and the legend begins. All actually became larger-than-life characters during their lifetimes, as contemporary newspapers and books embellished their deeds for their own purposes. But it was in Hollywood that the line between reality and myth was completely blurred. Each chapter-length entry here first focuses on the known facts of the people's lives and how each became truly legendary during their lifetimes. The reality is then compared to how they have been portrayed in the movies.

Book San Francisco A History of the Pacific Coast Metropolis Vol 1

Download or read book San Francisco A History of the Pacific Coast Metropolis Vol 1 written by John Philip Young and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2017 with total page 773 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the period of active life of San Francisco has been a short one, as historical periods go, it has been crowded with incident. Enough of the latter could be found to present a vivid picture of the career of the metropolis of the Pacific coast, but in this work something more has been attempted than a mere recital of occurrences. It has been the purpose of the author to trace the causes of the growth of the City, and to describe the manifold activities of its citizens. This is volume one out of two of one of the most thrilling and detailed histories of San Francisco.

Book An Honest Enemy

Download or read book An Honest Enemy written by Paul Magid and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of his military career, George Crook developed empathy and admiration for American Indians both as foes and as allies. As Paul Magid has demonstrated in the previous two volumes of his groundbreaking biography, this experience prepared Crook well for his metamorphosis from Indian fighter to outspoken advocate of Indian rights. An Honest Enemy is the third and final volume of Magid’s account of George Crook’s life and involvement in the Indian wars. Using rarely tapped information, including Crook’s own diaries, the work documents in dramatic detail the general’s arduous and dangerous campaigns against the Chiricahua Apaches and their leader Geronimo, action that forms a backdrop to the transformation in the general’s role vis-à-vis Native Americans. In a story by turns harrowing and tragic, Magid details the plight of Indians who, in the aftermath of their defeat, were consigned to reservations too barren to sustain them, where they were subjected to impoverishment, indifference, and in many cases, outright corruption. With growing anger, Crook watched as many tribes faced death from starvation and disease and, unwilling to passively accept their fate, desperately sought to flee their reservations and return to their homelands. Charged with the grim task of returning the Indians to such conditions, Crook was forced to choose between fulfilling his duties as a soldier and his humanitarian values. Magid describes Crook’s struggle to reconcile these conflicting concerns while promoting policies he regarded as essential to the welfare of the Indians in the face of a hostile public, jealous fellow officers, and an unsympathetic government that regarded his efforts as quixotic and misguided. Here is a tale that readers will not soon forget.

Book History of Fresno County Vol 1

Download or read book History of Fresno County Vol 1 written by Paul E. Vandor and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 731 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editor and publisher of these volumes, which include not less than several hundred biographies spread across the six books, presents them confidently as a verified and authoritative history of the county - the result of conscientious labor in original research , and of information imparted by pioneers and their descendants , entered upon originally as a pastime and without thought of publication of the collated material. It essays to present county and city historical data that had lasting bearing on the times, but which with many of the picturesque incidents were ignored or overlooked in the publications that have gone before; and lastly it is an endeavor also to fill in the hiatus of the years from 1882 through the first World War, to bring to date the tale of the development and growth of a county which, from a small beginning with a rough and uncouth mining population and hardy pioneers, has become one of the richest, politically best governed and industrially typical of a great state. Incredible as their development and growth have been, through successive industrial epochs, the mind cannot grasp the future of State and County, now that the twin Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys have reached the zenith of development and production. Today Fresno County is a leading contributor to California's greater riches, enhanced production, and to the unmeasured happiness and prosperity of its citizens. Fresno is one of the state's centers. A remarkable past will be eclipsed by a more wonderful future - it is manifest destiny. This is volume one out of six.
