  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing

  • Pages : 145 pages

Download or read book Embodied Inquiry written by Jennifer Leigh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embodied inquiry is the process of using embodied approaches in order to study, explore or investigate a topic. But what does it actually mean to be 'embodied'? This book explores why and how we use our bodies in order to research, what an embodied approach brings to a research project, and the kinds of considerations that need to be taken into account to research in this way. We all have bodies, feelings, emotions and experiences that affect the questions we are interested in, the ways in which we choose to approach finding out the answers to those questions, and the patterns we see in the data we gather as a result. Embodied Inquiry foregrounds these questions of positionality and reflexivity in research. It considers how a project or study may be designed to take these into account and why multimodal and creative approaches to research may be used to capture embodied experiences. The book offers insights into how to analyse the types of data emerging from embodied inquiries, and the ethical considerations that are important to consider. Accounting for the interdisciplinary nature of the field, this book has been written to be a concise primer into Embodied Inquiry for research students, scholars and practitioners alike.

Book Grave Murder

  • Publisher : Penguin Random House South Africa

Download or read book Grave Murder written by Jana van der Merwe and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She is a petite, innocent-looking young woman with fantasies of skinning and flaying human skin. He is a diagnosed schizophrenic who fantasises about committing cold-blooded murder. When they meet, they will plan and execute one of the most horrific crimes ever documented in this country. In April 2011, the sleepy gold-mining town of Welkom was deeply shocked when the dismembered, decapitated body of Michael van Eck was discovered buried in a shallow grave on the outskirts of the local cemetery. Was this a muti murder, the work of a deranged madman or part of a satanic ritual? For the investigators and psychologists involved, the mystery only deepened when a seemingly unlikely arrest was made: a soft-spoken girl next door and her intelligent, devoted fiancé. Joining forces with some of the country’s most specialised experts in the occult and psychopathy, Lieutenant Ogies Nel of the Welkom Detective Unit and her colleagues in the South African Police Service unravelled one of the most brutal psychologically motivated murders ever committed in South Africa’s crime history. As they uncovered the evidence, they exposed a most heinous deed, alarmingly similar to the crimes committed by serial killer Ed Gein, who had a preference for flaying his victims’ skin. Grave Murder is the chilling account of how appearances can be very deceptive – how those who might seem innocent and harmless on the outside may hide some dark, disturbing secrets that are just waiting to be revealed.

  • Author : Shyon Baumann
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2018-06-05
  • ISBN : 0691187282

Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Book I Think You re Totally Wrong

Download or read book I Think You re Totally Wrong written by David Shields and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caleb Powell always wanted to become an artist, but he overcommitted to life; his former professor David Shields always wanted to become a human being, but he overcommitted to art. The stay-at-home dad (three young girls) and the workaholic writer (eighteen books) head to the woods to spend four days together in a cabin, arguing life vs. art. I Think You’re Totally Wrong is an impassioned, funny, probing, fiercely inconclusive, nearly-to-the-death debate. Shields and Powell talk about everything—marriage, family, sports, sex, happiness, drugs, death, betrayal, and (of course) writers and writing—in the name of exploring and debating their central question: the lived life versus the examined life. There are no teachers or students here, no interviewers or interviewees, no masters of the universe—only a chasm of uncertainty, in a dialogue that remains dazzlingly provocative and entertaining from start to finish. James Franco’s film adaptation of I Think You’re Totally Wrong, starring the authors, premiered in 2015.

Book excerpt: The Big One and what we can do to get ready for it. Mention the word earthquake and most people think of California. But while the Golden State shakes on a regular basis, Washington State, Oregon, and British Columbia are located in a zone that can produce the world's biggest earthquakes and tsunamis. In the eastern part of the continent, small cities and large, from Ottawa to Montréal to New York City, sit in active earthquake zones. In fact, more than 100-million North Americans live in active seismic zones, many of whom do not realize the risk to their community. For more than a decade, Gregor Craigie interviewed scientists, engineers, and emergency planners about earthquakes, disaster response, and resilience. He has also collected vivid first-hand accounts from people who have survived deadly earthquakes. His fascinating and deeply researched book dives headfirst into explaining the science behind The Big One -- and asks what we can do now to prepare ourselves for events geologists say aren't a matter of if, but when.

Book The Farr Disease

  • Release : 2015-08-24
  • ISBN : 9781938406485
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book The Farr Disease written by Dan Swainbank and published by Raphel Marketing.. This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1880, Dr. William Osler of McGill University in Montreal published an article in a medical journal entitled, "Heredity in Progressive Muscular Atrophy as Illustrated in the Farr Family of Vermont." In that article he reported on the case of a farmer from Sutton, Vermont named Erastus Farr, and told the story of Erastus's father, an uncle and an aunt, and four cousins, all of whom had died young of this disease of muscle wasting, now known as Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. In his well-researched book, Dan Swainbank tells the rest of the continuing story: of the family's losses over the next 135 years, of the advances in our understanding of ALS and the discovery of the family's defective gene in 1993, of the family's involvement in research and clinical trials, and the on-going search for a cure. It is also an account of a family's love and support, and the love and support of a community which keeps the hope alive that someday this sad story will have a happy ending. "This family has been of immense importance to studies of ALS. Through this family, and others like it, it was possible to discover the first ALS genes. In turn, those led to cell and animal models of the disease which have been critical in efforts to find treatments for ALS. It is possible that the first types of ALS to be treated will be those that have been so devastating to this wonderful family." Dr. Robert H. Brown. University of Massachusetts Medical School, Professor and Chair of Neurology. Discoverer of the first ALS-related gene. "It is because of the involvement in research of the Farr family and their descendants that we learned about SOD1 ALS and ways to treat it. Their love for each other and passion to help others fueled this research and has given hope to many who live with ALS. We are at an unprecedented time where several clinical trials to silence the genetic mutation in SOD1 are possible and happening. These include the use of antisense oligonucleotides and gene therapy approaches. It is a time of promise for SOD1 families and all people with ALS. Thank you Curtis, Clif, Mary and Dennis for inspiring all of us to fight against SOD1 ALS, until the cure is found." Dr. Merit Cudkowicz, Chief and Director of ALS Program, Neurology Department, Massachusetts General Hospital "As a member of a family with a 150-plus year history of life and death with ALS, we understand just how insidious this disease can be. We do not want to be an orphan disease. We want to be adopted into the minds, hearts and financial support of caring individuals and organizations. This disease is too insidious to be allowed to continue to make "orphans" in young families who lose their mothers and fathers." Susan Lynaugh, Farr family member and activist All profits from the sale of this book will go toward the search for a cure for ALS at Massachusetts General Hospital.
