Book Corpus Based Approaches to Sentence Structures

Download or read book Corpus Based Approaches to Sentence Structures written by Toshihiro Takagaki and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005-04-14 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of the series "Usage-Based Linguistic Informatics", a product of the 21st century COE program held at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS). The project has an objective to realize an integration of theoretical and applied linguistics on the basis of computer sciences. With a view to practically applying the results of linguistic analysis to language education, the promotion of individual language research has become a high-priority issue. A new field of linguistic research is intended to be developed by elucidating the state of linguistic usage based on the analysis of large amounts of linguistic data. The volume, thus, consists mainly of language-specific corpus-based analyses on sentence structures in ten different languages such as Nuuchahnulth, Korean, Chinese, Malay, Turkish, Arabic, Russian, French, English and Spanish. It also includes papers that deal with various theoretical issues in contrastive linguistics and typology.

Book Corpus Analysis

Download or read book Corpus Analysis written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers published in this volume were originally presented at the Third North American Symposium on Corpus Linguistics and Language Teaching held on 23-25 March 2001 at the Park Plaza Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts. Each paper analyses some aspect of language use or structure in one or more of the many linguistic corpora now available. The number of different corpora investigated in the book is a real testament to the progress that has been made in recent years in developing new corpora, particularly spoken corpora, as over half of the papers deal either wholly or partially with the analysis of spoken data. This book will be of particular interest to undergraduate and graduate students and scholars interested in corpus, socio and applied linguistics, discourse analysis, pragmatics, and language teaching.

Book Corpus based Analysis and Diachronic Linguistics

Download or read book Corpus based Analysis and Diachronic Linguistics written by Yuji Kawaguchi and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, linguists do not question the existence of synchronic variation, and the dichotomy between synchrony and diachrony. They recognize that synchrony can be motivated regionally (diatopic variation), sociolinguistically (diastratic variation), or stylistically (diaphasic variation). But, further, they can also recognize the hybrid nature of synchrony, which is referred to as "dynamic synchrony." This conception of synchrony assumes that similar patterns of usage can coexist in a community during a certain period and that their mutual relations are not static but conflicting enough to result in a future systematic change through symptomatic synchronic variation. Emergence of a large corpus of written texts for some languages has enabled quantitative as well as qualitative analyses of the synchronic conditions for diachronic changes, over both long and short spans of time. Most of the 14 papers in this volume represent studies on synchronic and diachronic variations based on such corpus data. For sale in all countries except Japan. Book Corpus based Research in Applied Linguistics

Download or read book Corpus based Research in Applied Linguistics written by Viviana Cortes and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-01-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises nine contributions that were written by up-and-coming corpus-based researchers with varied areas of expertise, who were all disciples of Douglas Biber sometime in the past two decades. These papers cover a wide variety of linguistic analyses and describe the principles of the Flagstaff school: a careful procedure for language corpora collection with special consideration for corpus size, representativeness, sampling and systematic analysis; the use of computer programming abilities that allow the posing of corpus-based research questions never asked before; and a strong emphasis on the combination of quantitative methods based on sound and innovative statistical procedures complemented with comprehensive qualitative functional analyses of the language. This volume has been edited in honor of Douglas Biber, a pioneer of the American school of corpus-based research.

Book Corpus Linguistics An Introduction to the Field and its Use in Linguistics

Download or read book Corpus Linguistics An Introduction to the Field and its Use in Linguistics written by Theresa Rass and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-11-04 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2, University of Innsbruck (Anglistik), course: Synchronic and/or Diachronic English Linguistics: English Syntax and Morphology, language: English, abstract: This paper is dealing with the topic of corpus linguistics. It tries to give an overview about this topic, as I think that, although it already gained popularity, not everyone is familiar with it. First, I want to explain what a corpus actually is, and what it is useful for. The different types of corpora will be described and also potential risks of depending to much on computer-processable corpora. Then the focus shifts to the fields of application of corpus linguistics, and also the use in syntax and morphology is discussed. I will also try to illustrate the opportunities a corpus provides by using an example for better understanding. The main aim of this paper is to give an overview about corpus linguistics and the fields of application, with attention to syntax and morphology.

Book Argument Structure in Usage Based Construction Grammar

Download or read book Argument Structure in Usage Based Construction Grammar written by Florent Perek and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The argument structure of verbs, defined as the part of grammar that deals with how participants in verbal events are expressed in clauses, is a classical topic in linguistics that has received considerable attention in the literature. This book investigates argument structure in English from a usage-based perspective, taking the view that the cognitive representation of grammar is shaped by language use, and that crucial aspects of grammatical organization are tied to the frequency with which words and syntactic constructions are used. On the basis of several case studies combining quantitative corpus studies and psycholinguistic experiments, it is shown how a usage-based approach sheds new light on a number of issues in argument realization and offers frequency-based explanations for its organizing principles at three levels of generality: verbs, constructions, and argument structure alternations.

Book A Corpus based Error Analysis of Turkish Learners and the English Verb Phrase

Download or read book A Corpus based Error Analysis of Turkish Learners and the English Verb Phrase written by Seda Evirgen and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, language: English, abstract: In the thesis at hand, a special emphasis will be on Turkish English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ errors and their difficulties when learning English as a second language. Further, it will provide interpretative approaches regarding the reasons for this. The errors that will be analyzed are subject-verb-agreement errors in different subcategories in Turkish EFL students’ writings in the form of argumentative essays. Furthermore, the essays are analyzed for incorrect verb phrases because of missing verbs, which could be due to the different sentence structures in English and Turkish. The aim is to conduct a corpus-based error analysis in order to investigate and answer two main questions. The first question is, if Turkish EFL students are having difficulties in applying the rules in their essays. The second question deals with the analysis of the error sources to be able to interpret them in order to provide pedagogical implications towards them.

Book Synchronic Corpus Linguistics

Download or read book Synchronic Corpus Linguistics written by Carol E. Percy and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1996 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synchronic corpus linguistics contains select papers from the sixteenth International Conference on English Language Research on Computerized Corpora (ICAME 16). The papers reflect the state of the art in the design, analysis, and annotation of corpora. Corpora new and old facilitate the description of single registers of English (e.g., London teenage English, business English) and of specific grammatical topics across registers (e.g., the grammatical flexibility of idioms), including variation studies (e.g., popular vs. technical registers of English). Other corpora permit the comparison of English to other languages (Norwegian, German, Swedish); of L1 English to L2 English; and of English as an original language to English in translation. A number of these papers emphasize pragmatics: indeed, among the papers on spoken English is an assessment of corpora annotated for discourse analysis. Other papers describe different aspects of the automatic analysis of text. Two papers describe semantic analysis of large text corpora composed of news/business text. Automatic grammatical analysis is the subject of other papers: two evaluate existing automatic parsers and wordclass taggers, while two describe how annotated corpora are being used to develop two new and innovative automatic parsers.

Book Corpus based Analyses of the Problem Solution Pattern

Download or read book Corpus based Analyses of the Problem Solution Pattern written by Lynne Flowerdew and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008-02-06 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports research on the Problem-Solution rhetorical pattern, which has to date received very little attention in corpus-based studies. Insights from genre analysis and systemic-functional grammar are also applied to the analysis of the Problem-Solution pattern, thus moving towards a more multi-faceted analysis of corpus data. The pattern is investigated in two specialized corpora of technically-oriented report writing, a professional corpus and a student corpus, using a key word and key-key word analysis. Phraseological analyses of key words in both corpora are presented. Data show that students’ writing lacks a range of lexico-grammatical patternings for expressing the Problem and Solution elements of the pattern. The book concludes with some pedagogic implications and applications of the findings. Suggested concordancing activities are discussed within the context of key issues in the field of data-driven learning.
