Book excerpt: Fat seemed to be getting fatter under Queen Victoria: Tweedledum and Tweedledee; Joe "the fat boy" in The Pickwick Papers; even the first known report of childhood obesity in 1859. But for the short, corpulent (and extremely success- ful) undertaker William Banting, the overweight life was not a bundle of laughs. It was only at the age of sixty, when he was unable to even "attend to the little offices which humanity requires, without considerable pain and difficulty", that he finally stumbled upon a cure: an early incarnation of the Atkins diet. Butter, potatoes, sugar, milk--all gone, in favour of fish, meat, dry toast (and seven glasses of claret a day). And with the diet for the body came a diet for the mind: for Lewis Carroll, an indiscriminate intake of "fatty" information was just as harmful as carbohydrates--and in today's society of ever-increasing "consumption" of food, news and even relationships, Banting and Carroll are remarkably ahead of their time. The books in "Found on the Shelves" have been chosen to give a fascinating insight into the treasures that can be found while browsing in The London Library. Now celebrating its 175th anniversary, with over seventeen miles of shelving and more than a million books, The London Library has become an unrivalled archive of the modes, manners and thoughts of each generation which has helped to form it. From essays on dieting in the 1860s to instructions for gentlewomen on trout-fishing, from advice on the ill health caused by the "modern" craze of bicycling to travelogues from Norway, they are as readable and relevant today as they were more than a century ago--even if contemporary dieticians might not recommend quite such a regular intake of brandy!

Book Childhood Obesity in America

Download or read book Childhood Obesity in America written by Laura Dawes and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-09 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, a plump child was considered a healthy child. No longer. An overweight child is now known to be at risk for maladies ranging from asthma to cardiovascular disease, and obesity among American children has reached epidemic proportions. Childhood Obesity in America traces the changes in diagnosis and treatment, as well as popular understanding, of the most serious public health problem facing American children today. Excess weight was once thought to be something children outgrew, or even a safeguard against infectious disease. But by the mid-twentieth century, researchers recognized early obesity as an indicator of lifelong troubles. Debates about its causes and proper treatment multiplied. Over the century, fat children were injected with animal glands, psychoanalyzed, given amphetamines, and sent to fat camp. In recent decades, an emphasis on taking personal responsibility for one’s health, combined with commercial interests, has affected the way the public health establishment has responded to childhood obesity—and the stigma fat children face. At variance with this personal emphasis is the realization that societal factors, including fast food, unsafe neighborhoods, and marketing targeted at children, are strongly implicated in weight gain. Activists and the courts are the most recent players in the obesity epidemic’s biography. Today, obesity in this age group is seen as a complex condition, with metabolic, endocrine, genetic, psychological, and social elements. Laura Dawes makes a powerful case that understanding the cultural history of a disease is critical to developing effective health policy.

Book Geographies of Obesity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Karen Witten
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-04-15
  • ISBN : 1317129105
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book Geographies of Obesity written by Karen Witten and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, rates of adult and childhood obesity in the developed world have risen sharply. By the year 2000, 65% of the United States population were overweight, 30% of these obese. Whilst medical treatment has tended to focus on individual habits of diet and exercise, this approach does little to account for globally increasing levels of obesity, and the external, environmental factors that may be responsible. This in-depth study assembles the evidence for a geographical explanation of current obesity trends, and is the first work to examine the ways in which environment and living conditions promote an imbalance of energy intake over energy expenditure. The book calls upon the expertise of geographers, nutritionists, epidemiologists, sociologists and public health researchers, resulting in a broad, multidisciplinary analysis of this important health issue. Book Obesity in Childhood and Adolescence

Download or read book Obesity in Childhood and Adolescence written by Wieland Kiess and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obesity in childhood and adolescence has reached epidemic proportions in all industrialized countries around the world. Its impact on individual lives as well as on health economics has to be recognized by physicians and the public alike. Among the most common consequences of obesity in the adolescent are hypertension, dyslipidemia, back pain and psychosocial problems. Therapeutic strategies include psychological and family therapy, lifestyle/behavior modification and nutrition education. The role of regular exercise and exercise programs is emphasized. Surgical procedures and drugs used in adult obesity are still not generally recommended for obese adolescents. This book aims to increase physicians knowledge and understanding of obesity in childhood and adolescence as well as to further public awareness of the health burden and economic dimension of obesity at a young age. Several chapters deliver insights into the basic understanding of which factors contribute to or prevent the development of overweight and obesity in young people. Other contributions provide tools for the clinician to manage the care of the child and adolescent with overweight/obesity. In addition, knowledge from the latest scientific studies on the molecular biology of obesity is also presented.

Book excerpt: In The Fattening of America, renowned health economist Eric Finkelstein, along with business writer Laurie Zuckerman, reveal how the U.S. economy has become the driving force behind our expanding waistlines. Book Obesity

  • Author : Alexandra A. Brewis

Download or read book Obesity written by Alexandra A. Brewis and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-08 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world now filled with more people who are overweight than underweight, public health and medical perspectives paint obesity as a catastrophic epidemic that threatens to overwhelm health systems and undermine life expectancies globally. In many societies, being obese also creates profound personal suffering because it is so culturally stigmatized. Yet despite loud messages about the health and social costs of being obese, weight gain is a seemingly universal aspect of the modern human condition. Grounded in a holistic anthropological approach and using a range of ethnographic and ecological case studies, Obesity shows that the human tendency to become and stay fat makes perfect sense in terms of evolved human inclinations and the physical and social realities of modern life. Drawing on her own fieldwork in the rural United States, Mexico, and the Pacific Islands over the last two decades, Alexandra A. Brewis addresses such critical questions as why obesity is defined as a problem and why some groups are so much more at risk than others. She suggests innovative ways that anthropology and other social sciences can use community-based research to address the serious public health and social justice concerns provoked by the global spread of obesity.

Book Clinical Handbook of Weight Management Second Edition

Download or read book Clinical Handbook of Weight Management Second Edition written by Michael E J Lean and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obesity has not, until very recently, featured very strongly in medical training. There has been a widespread view that becoming overweight is a sign of a weak personality, a combination of gluttony and apparent sloth, accompanied very often by a degree of mendacity. For this reason, medical practitioners are often reluctant to become involved in obesity and weight management. The second edition of this popular handbook provides an up-to-date background on obesity and an understanding of weight management for health professionals and offers outlines for management plans which can be instituted at a primary care level.

Book Dieting Overweight and Obesity

Download or read book Dieting Overweight and Obesity written by Wolfgang Stroebe and published by American Psychological Association (APA). This book was released on 2008 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dieting, Overweight, and Obesity: Self-Regulation in a Food-Rich Environment examines why self-regulation of weight is so difficult for many people. The author explains the history of bodyweight standards, details the emotional and physical consequences of being overweight, and explores the various treatment and prevention plans for obesity. In reviewing the numerous psychological theories that explain people's problems with weight, Stroebe points out that each does not take into consideration the desire for palatable food. He then presents the goal conflict theory which assumes that chronic dieters who have difficulties in controlling their weight often disregard bodily cues of hunger and satiety not because they are unable to recognize them, but because they do not want to recognize them.
