Book West German Industry and the Challenge of the Nazi Past

Download or read book West German Industry and the Challenge of the Nazi Past written by S. Jonathan Wiesen and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2004-02-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking study, S. Jonathan Wiesen explores how West German business leaders remade and marketed their public image in the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust. He challenges assumptions that West Germans - and industrialists in particular - were silent about the recent past during the years of denazification and reconstruction, revealing how German business leaders attempted to absolve themselves of responsibility for Nazi crimes while recasting themselves as socially and culturally engaged public figures. Through case studies of individual firms such as Siemens and Krupp, Wiesen depicts corporate publicity as a telling example of postwar selective memory.

Book The Business Culture in Germany

Download or read book The Business Culture in Germany written by Collin Randlesome and published by Digital Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The business culture in Germany presents a fascinating picture in the mid-1990s. Attempts are still being made to introduce into eastern Germany the beliefs, attitudes and core values of the business culture which have been responsible for so much success and prosperity in the west - but have for many years been culturally rejected by the east. In his new book, Collin Randlesome identifies strengths and conservatism as two of the most powerful of these western values. Collin Randlesome identifies strength and conservatism as two of the most powerful of these western values and he suggests they find their general expression in: *a social, rather than a free market economy *a solid manufacturing base *a strong emphasis on research and development in industry *concern for the physical environment *a nurturing, long-term view of business. Criticism of German companies has often focused on the less tangible aspects, however, such as a tendency to be product-led and an aversion to risk and the spirit of enterprise. Eastern Germany has developed in a very different direction, and the author examines the effects of introducing western values here, as well as the conflicts and contrasts that have arisen. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this merging of cultures is the reaction to the integration process by Germans themselves. The differing responses of people in both western and eastern Germany are recorded in detail.

Book A History of Corporate Governance around the World

Download or read book A History of Corporate Governance around the World written by Randall K. Morck and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many Americans, capitalism is a dynamic engine of prosperity that rewards the bold, the daring, and the hardworking. But to many outside the United States, capitalism seems like an initiative that serves only to concentrate power and wealth in the hands of a few hereditary oligarchies. As A History of Corporate Governance around the World shows, neither conception is wrong. In this volume, some of the brightest minds in the field of economics present new empirical research that suggests that each side of the debate has something to offer the other. Free enterprise and well-developed financial systems are proven to produce growth in those countries that have them. But research also suggests that in some other capitalist countries, arrangements truly do concentrate corporate ownership in the hands of a few wealthy families. A History of Corporate Governance around the World provides historical studies of the patterns of corporate governance in several countries-including the large industrial economies of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States; larger developing economies like China and India; and alternative models like those of the Netherlands and Sweden.

Book Industry and Politics in West Germany

Download or read book Industry and Politics in West Germany written by Peter J. Katzenstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic technological developments in industrial production, the rise of new social movements in national politics, and great changes in the international political economy have left a deep imprint on the Federal Republic. A compelling explanation of West Germany's success in maintaining economic prosperity and political stability under such challenging conditions has continued to elude observers. Under the editorship of Peter J. Katzenstein, thirteen distinguished scholars from both sides of the Atlantic here provide an original interpretation of the political economy of the Bonn Republic during the forty years since its founding, and explore in particular its extraordinary capacity for accommodating change. Whereas studies in political economy have typically focused on one level of political action—either the shop floor, or national politics, or the international system—this innovative account analyzes the interaction of change at all three levels, bringing together case studies drawn from six manufacturing and service sectors.

Book Managers and Management in West Germany

Download or read book Managers and Management in West Germany written by Peter Lawrence and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1980 but re-issued now with a new preface, this book looks at the German manager from a sociological viewpoint and explains why German management has been so successful and highlights the key factors in the training of the German manager and the attitudes and skills he develops in his work. The views and aspirations of German managers themselves are discussed in the light of the author's first-hand acquaintance with German industry. Throughout there is comparison with the UK, USA and other European countries. The manufacturing function is the subject of a special examination. It is argued that although German management has adopted some American practices the ethic is strictly German and an essential part of the German character.

Book West German Industry and the Challenge of the Nazi Past 1945 1955

Download or read book West German Industry and the Challenge of the Nazi Past 1945 1955 written by S. Jonathan Wiesen and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003-01-14 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust, West German industrialists faced a major crisis in their public image. With mounting revelations about the use of forced and slave labor, the "Aryanization" of Jewish property, and corporate profiteering under National Socialism, industrialists emerged from the war with their national and international reputations in tatters. In this groundbreaking study, Jonathan Wiesen explores how West German business leaders remade and marketed their public image between 1945 and 1955. He challenges assumptions that West Germans--and industrialists in particular--were silent about the recent past during the years of denazification and reconstruction. Drawing on sources that include private correspondence, popular literature, and a wealth of unpublished materials from corporate archives, Wiesen reveals how German business leaders attempted to absolve themselves of responsibility for Nazi crimes while recasting themselves as socially and culturally engaged public figures. Through case studies of individual firms such as Siemens and Krupp, Wiesen depicts corporate publicity as a telling example of postwar selective memory. In his introduction and conclusion, Wiesen considers the recent establishment of a multibillion dollar fund to provide financial compensation to the victims of industrial exploitation during World War II. This acknowledgment by German industry of its ongoing responsibility for its past crimes underscores the contemporary relevance of Wiesen's study.
