Book Corporate Social Responsibility Practices The Cost of Debt

Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility Practices The Cost of Debt written by Luís Eichhorn and published by . This book was released on 2023-12-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: 1,3, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: This Master's Thesis conducts a literature review of 32 studies, compiling the current knowledge about the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices, on companies' debt costs, focusing on quantitative assessments. The growing recognition of the role corporations play in addressing environmental and social challenges has been on the rise for several years. As businesses are increasingly being held accountable for their environmental and societal influence, the calling for active engagement in CSR issues is louder than ever before. Consequently, companies face a growing demand regarding CSR issues such as sustainability practices, social impact initiatives, ethical governance, and transparent disclosure of these. Apparently, the traditional sole purpose of profit-making and increasing shareholder value is evolving into a multifaceted commitment to diverse stakeholder demands. CSR awareness and reporting on it have gained a lot of momentum in the last two decades. "2020 survey identified that 80% of N100 companies worldwide (the top 100 companies by revenue in 52 countries and jurisdictions) now report on sustainability, up by 5% since the last survey in 2017, while the reporting rate has reached 90% or more for the G250 group (the world's largest 250 companies by revenue) since 2011". Within this context, the financial implications of CSR practices, particularly their impact on companies' ability to finance operations and expansion plans, emerge as a critical area for investigation. A relatively unexplored aspect is the effect on companies' debt, which marks the primary focus of examination in this thesis.

Book Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Finance in Japan

Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Finance in Japan written by Megumi Suto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the linkages between the evolution of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate financing and governance in Japan since the late 2000s. Since the 1990s, increasing economic and financial globalization has steadily eroded the Japanese style of business based on relationships and influenced the awareness and practices of CSR that are unique to Japanese companies. In Japan’s two “lost decades” after the bubble economy, the business model and corporate financing seem to have continued a gradual financial reform toward a more market-oriented system. CSR awareness and practices of Japanese companies have been influenced by social and environmental issues that global society and communities face. Furthermore, the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011 triggered increasing attention paid to the responsibility of business toward society. In this process, major players in corporate governance and components of governance structure have continued to change. The conventional view of Japanese corporate governance and corporate finance is too narrow to understand this field in Japan. This book is based on empirical research to investigate how multifaceted CSR has aligned with business and finance and has influenced the corporate governance structure of Japanese companies. The findings and discussions in this book act are stepping stones in further research on the linkages between business and society, and provide empirical evidence on changes in Japanese corporate finance and governance.

Book Does Corporate Social Responsibility Affect the Cost of Capital

Download or read book Does Corporate Social Responsibility Affect the Cost of Capital written by Sadok El Ghoul and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine the effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on the cost of equity capital for a large sample of U.S. firms. Using several approaches to estimate firms' ex ante cost of equity, we find that firms with better CSR rankings exhibit cheaper equity financing. In particular, our findings suggest that investment in improving responsible employee relations, environmental policies, and product strategies contributes substantially to reducing firms' cost of equity. Our results also show that participation in two “sin” industries, namely, tobacco and nuclear power, increases firms' cost of equity. These findings support arguments in the literature that firms with socially responsible practices have higher valuation and lower risk.

Book Perspectives on Corporate Social Responsibility

Download or read book Perspectives on Corporate Social Responsibility written by Lez Rayman-Bacchus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade the question of the relationship between organizations and society has been subject to much debate, often of a critical nature. The decade has seen protests concerning the actions of organizations, exposures of corporate exploitation and unfolding accounting scandals. At the same time ethical behaviour and a concern for the environment have been shown to have a positive correlation with corporate performance. The nature of corporate social responsibility is therefore a topical one for businesses and academics. There are, however, many different perspectives upon what is meant by corporate social responsibility and how this might be applied within organizations. The authors involved are respected academics from a variety of disciplines from around the world. The contributions to this book investigate theoretical perspectives on the topic, the application in practice of socially responsible behaviour and the ethical dimension of such behaviour.

Book The Impact of ESG Performance on Cost of Debt via Credit Risk A Case for Sustainability Linked Loans in Europe

Download or read book The Impact of ESG Performance on Cost of Debt via Credit Risk A Case for Sustainability Linked Loans in Europe written by Florian Porzel and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-02-17 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,0, Erasmus University Rotterdam (Rotterdam School of Management), course: Finance / Sustainable Finance, language: English, abstract: This thesis, graded with summa cum laude, examines the effect of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) expressed through Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) scores on firms’ cost of debt on two distinct layers with a particular interest on the economic mechanism through which sustainability performance unfolds. Three distinct economic channels for the effect of corporate sustainability on the cost of debt capital are established, namely governance strengths, information asymmetry, and credit risk. The work provides evidence that the latter is primarily responsible for lower debt premia to sustainable borrowers. First, on firm-level, it is shown that superior ESG performance can offset cost of debt by 0.45% for a one standard deviation improvement on ESG performance. In current times of global climate stress with environmental anomalies happening at a daily rate, business actions are understood to play the pivotal role in fighting the most pressing concern in contemporary human history – the transition towards a sustainable economic model. In fact, in order to reach the ambitious sustainability target set by the European Union to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, additional sustainable investments of EUR175 to EUR290 billion are in demand annually. As such, the scaling up of private sector investments entered as key element into the EU Sustainable Finance Action Plan launched by the European Commission in 2018. And although the first climate change bankruptcy with PG&E Corp. failing to meet potential liabilities of around USD30 billion resulting from wildfires already occurred, the need for sustainable adaptation of business practices is erroneously evaluated against hypothetical scenarios or a debatable model of the long-term effects of change.

Book Corporate Governance in Japan

Download or read book Corporate Governance in Japan written by Masahiko Aoki and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-09-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debates regarding corporate governance have become increasingly important in Japan as the post-war model of bank-based, stakeholder-oriented corporate governance faces the new pressures associated with globalization and growing investor demands for shareholder value. Bringing together a group of leading scholars from economics, law, sociology and management studies, this book looks at how the Japanese approach to corporate governance and the firm have changed in the post-bubble era. The contributions offer a unique empirical exploration of why and how Japanese firms are reshaping their corporate governance arrangements, leading to greater diversity among firms and new 'hybrid' forms of corporate governance. The book concludes by looking at what effect these incremental but transformative changes may have on Japan's distinctive variety of capitalism.

Download or read book Values Nature and Culture in the American Corporation written by William C. Frederick and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Values, Nature, and Culture in the American Corporation, distinguished ethicist William Frederick explores issues of fundamental importance to all who aspire to conduct their business affairs ethically. He begins with an examination of the three value systems in business that are basically incompatible, and therefore in constant tension. The first is the need for managers to efficiently allocate resources for maximum profits. The second is the natural tendency for managers, in pursuit of the first goal, to accumulate power for its own sake. The third is the desire for people in the community to create relationships that will perpetuate these communities. Frederick brings in a range of ideas and concepts from the social sciences as well as the natural sciences to illuminate his discussion. In the final section of the book he explores a range of issues of current concern to managers, including corporate culture and technology.

Book Corporate Social Responsibility and the Cost of Equity

Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility and the Cost of Equity written by Bibek Khadgi and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have paid close attention to the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and business performance, with various studies looking at the possible advantages of CSR. The increased focus is due to the government's, the general public's, and investors' growing social and environmental concerns. In order to remain sustainable, businesses should give back to the communities in which they operate. It is especially important for banks because they rely heavily on public funds in the form of deposits. CSR's impact on several financial measures such as profitability, cost of capital, and corporate risk level has long been at the forefront of debate, and a significant management consequence makes it worthwhile to comprehend the link between the two. In contrast to early philanthropic perspectives, the influence of corporate social responsibility as a strategic resource on numerous performance and risk measures has previously been investigated. This study aimed to investigate the link between bank spending on corporate social responsibility and the cost of equity for 21 commercial banks in Nepal. In the context of Nepal Rastra Banks' guidelines of spending 1% of the previous year's net profit on corporate social responsibility, the yearly CSR expenditure of banks has been used as an independent variable and the cost of equity as a dependent variable. The capital asset pricing model was used to determine the cost of equity. Similarly, bank-specific control variables and macroeconomic control variables are employed. Based on 840 bank year panel data observations spanning 5 years from fiscal year 2017/18 to 2021/22, pooled ordinary least squares (POLS), fixed effect, and random effect regression estimation were performed, followed by the Hausman test to determine the suitability of fixed or random effect models and the Breusch-Pagan LM test to determine the suitability of pooled OLS and random effect models. Both tests validated the pooled OLS method's suitability for this investigation. The findings show that corporate social responsibility has a significant negative influence on the cost of equity. In other words, larger CSR costs decrease the cost of equity. The results reinforce the growing strategic view of CSR. The study's conclusions have far-reaching implications. The first notable implications for bank executives are that they view CSR as a strategic resource for lowering their cost of equity. Instilling a greater CSR culture of transparency and disclosure might lower the cost of equity. Furthermore, the findings are beneficial to investors and portfolio managers. The findings arerelated to the fact that increased CSR initiatives promote transparency and minimize perceived risk. Thus, investors and portfolio managers might hunt for socially responsible banks, or, in this study setting, banks with higher CSR spending, for investments. It benefits their job of risk management and diversification. Moreover, this study finds that banks do not spend 1% of their previous year's net profit each year. It unleashes the condition of non-compliance with regulatory norms as well as unstandardized disclosure practices. The regulatory authorities need to ensure that all banks comply with the regulations. Moreover, a standardized approach to CSR reporting and disclosures can be an issue for new policy dialogue to improve CSR culture and practices.
