Book excerpt: This dissertation evaluates and compares social and environmental records of Chinese national oil companies (NOCs) operating in Latin America from the early 21st century to 2015. Five countries representing the entirety of Chinese NOCs' physical presence are selected: Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela. The project discovers that Chinese NOCs demonstrate the highest level of social responsibility in Peru and the lowest in Venezuela, with the other three countries constituting intermediate observations. The differences in social responsibility records are then causally traced to variances in the host countries' regulatory frameworks and civil society capacities. Chinese NOCs are found to be most willing to commit to social responsibility under an enabling regulatory environment in which the host government facilitates competitiveness and decentralization in its hydrocarbons industry while upholding inclusive policies regarding its civil society. Moreover, these NOCs are most likely to follow through on their CSR commitments when faced with a unified and collaborative civil society. These major findings yield important policy lessons for both the host government and the civil society in developing countries with abundance in energy resources.

However, due to the decisive government interventions, further potential underlying reasons for Chinese companies' corporate social responsibility (CSR) involvement remain uncertain. The goal of this thesis is to provide insights about CSR and its key drivers and the potential effects of CSR on Chinese companies' performances as well as to offer recommendations for managers of companies in China. The thesis first addressed CSR development in the US and in China by using relevant literature. The results of the literature review showed that legal requirements, government influence, and financial profitability were key drivers for both US and Chinese companies, and CSR had a positive impact on firm performance in both countries. Subsequently, eight semi-structured key informant interviews were conducted. The selected informants were all upper-level managers in their respective companies who were aware of China's CSR strategy and were performing related practices in their firms. The interview results indicated that while legal requirements and government involvement were still the driving forces behind companies' CSR implementation in China, financial profitability is an additional predominant factor for companies' decision-makers. These two actors co-operate for the maximisation of oil profits and revenues while, at the same time, excluding local host communities from the participation in the oil development projects, preventing them to achieve a sustainable development, violating their Human Rights, and compromising their livelihoods. This paper analyses the legal framework of Nigeria in the oil sector and the peculiarities of the country in order to provide a critical overview of the issues, demonstrating that the amendment of the domestic Acts dealing with the topic, as well as the remediation to the damages caused by the oil multinationals, are no longer deferrable. The final aim is to suggest a pattern to sustainable oil development which, by means of applying the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility, would help to quell the conflict, to improve the standards of life of local people, and to make Nigeria emerge as a socio-environmentally responsible African resource-rich country.
