Book Corporate Social Responsibility and Discrimination

Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility and Discrimination written by Christina Keinert-Kisin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-27 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and deconstructs the existing explanations for the differential career development of qualified men and women. It reframes the problem of discrimination in the workplace as a matter of organizational ethics, social responsibility and compliance with existing equal opportunity laws. Sensitive points are identified where social biases, decision-makers' individual economic interests and shortcomings of organizational incentive policies may lead to discrimination against qualified women. The ideas put forward are empirically tested in an original laboratory experiment that examines personnel selection in the male-dominated field of science and technology. It contrasts the selection of applicants with gendered and gender-blind applications available to subjects under controlled conditions. 30% of participants were high-level decision-makers, which is unprecedented in this field of research. The results, highly relevant for organizational practice, are explained and discussed in detail.

Book Organizational Downsizing Discrimination and Corporate Social Responsibility

This book was released on 1999-09-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizational restructuring and corporate downsizing can have a significant impact on the perceived social responsibility and responsiveness of any firm. This book analyzes the phenomenon by identifying the nature and types of structural or functional relationships that exist between downsizing and organizational performance variables, on the one hand, and organizational social responsiveness on the other. It looks at changes in the use of various restructuring techniques to improve efficiency and effectiveness and the effects of these changes on the organizational citizenship standing in the community. It goes on to add to the understanding of the general phenomenon of downsizing by examining its relationship to the level and pervasiveness of corporate social responsibility. Karake-Shalhoub addresses three questions. First, is corporate downsizing related to improvement in organizational financial performance? Second, is there any relationship between downsizing and corporate social responsibility? Third, what is the nature of this relationship? The book will be attractive to management theory scholars, social responsibility and ethics researchers and practitioners, organizational development researchers and practitioners, and human resource scholars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few decades, the concept of social responsibility has emerged as an increasingly important feature of the business landscape. No longer can businesses base their decisions solely on economic criteria; now they must also consider the legal, ethical, moral, philanthropic, and social impacts of each business decision. This volume, intended for corporate managers and executives, brings this newly emphasized area of social concern and responsibility into clear focus. The author provides a complete overview of all aspects of social responsibility, including its roots in early civilizations, the historical evolution of the concept, and the role of governmental intervention in developing the social concepts that prevail in American business today. In addition, Anderson provides a wealth of practical advice, backed by numerous case studies for the executive who seeks a clear, workable understanding of corporate social responsibility. Divided into four principal sections, the book begins with an introduction to the concept of social responsibility in the corporation. The second section, on the history and development of social responsibility, addresses the social responsibility doctrines of great thinkers such as Plato, Aristotle, Adam Smith, and Marx; it also assesses the impact of the transition from an agricultural to an industrialized society on concepts of social responsibility; and finally, it discusses the passsage of major pieces of social responsibility legislation. Part Three examines the legal issues involved in social responsibility, among them sexual harassment, maternity leave, drugs in the workplace, and discrimination. Of particular interest is a chapter on ethical-moral standards and how to establish, administer, and control them. The final section demonstrates how to conduct a company social responsibility audit and points to future developments in corporate social responsibility. Each chapter is followed by a list of references; many chapters also include real-world scenarios highlighting important social responsibility issues.

Book Corporation be Good

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the story of Corporate Social Responsibility---what it means, where it came from, where it is going, what it requires of business. Told in an eyewitness, I-was-there style by a pioneer of the study of CSR in the nation's business schools, it takes the reader through a half century of corporate scandals and fierce struggles over corporate ethics---from Ralph Nader's 1960s Campaign GM to today's white collar crimes at Enron, WorldCom, Tyco, and other Wall Street giants. It lays bare the values that drive corporate culture, explores the motivational depths of corporate strategy and policy, demonstrates how biological impulses can lead business decision makers astray, questions the relevance and ethical commitment of business school education, reveals the spiritual side of management life, and holds out hope that the New Millennium will see improvement in the ethical performance of business. William C. Frederick is one of the founders of the study of Corporate Social Responsibility in the United States and initiated some of the key concepts and analytic categories. His books include Business and Society, Social Auditing, and Values, Nature, and Culture in the American Corporation. He was president of The Society for Business Ethics and The Society for Advancement of Socio-Economics, and chaired the Social Issues in Management division of The Academy of Management. He conducted studies of management education in Spain, Italy, Egypt, Yugoslavia, Ecuador, Nigeria, and Australia, and designed and taught programs for executives in U. S. corporations. He was dean of the business schools at the University of Kansas City and the University of Pittsburgh. He received a PhD in economics and anthropology from the University of Texas.
