Book Image Worlds

Download or read book Image Worlds written by David E. Nye and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By viewing the corporation as a communicator, Image Worlds links the histories of labor, business, consumption, engineering, and photography, providing a new perspective on one of the largest and most representative corporations. General Electric was one of the first modern industrial corporations to use photographs and other media resources to create images of itself; and the GE archives, comprising well over a million images, form one of the largest privately held collections in the world. To produce this venturesome book, David Nye has used these vast archives to develop a new approach to corporate ideology through corporate iconography.Image Worlds embraces symbols, intentional signs, and photographs on the one hand and the history of institutional and technological development on the other. It views photography as a developing technology with a history of its own, and presents the corporation as a communicator as well as a producer and employer.Illustrated with nearly 60 photographs from the archives, the book identifies five "image markets" that GE sought to organize and address. Company engineers, workers, and managers received publications designed to appeal to their presumed interests. Some of these grew into public journals with a scientific-educational mission; others were restricted in circulation even within the company. At the same time, illustrated mass-media advertising was created to reach potential consumers of GE products. Advertising that presented an image of GE as a place where "progress was the most important product." While GE was promoting this enlightened image, the company was also using its resources to reach the voting public, hoping to gain their support for private electrification in the national debate over municipal power.David E. Nye is Associate Professor of American History at Odense University in Denmark.

Book Corporate Image Management

Download or read book Corporate Image Management written by Steven Howard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate Image Management is a comprehensive, practical introduction to one of the most potent marketing and management tools available for the use of senior executives. Progressive corporate leaders will want to use this new discipline to drive their organizations in today's increasingly competitive markets. The corporate image communicates the organization's mission, the professionalism of its leadership, the calibre of its employees, and its roles within the marketing environment or political landscape. Historically, thinking and writing about the subject has come from the area of graphic design. This approach no longer suits the global, dynamic, cross-border and cross-cultural world in which many of today's businesses and organizations compete. Corporate Image Management describes the discipline which will be a key to successful marketing well into the next century. Steven Howard, who has over 18 years' senior marketing experience in the Asia/Pacific region, illustrates the concept of corporate image management with case stories from Singapore Airlines, MasterCard International, Amazon.com, the National Basketball Association, Britain's Royal Family, and many others. Treats corporate image correctly as a marketing discipline, not a design issue Corporate image is a critical component of relationship excellence Can be used for implementing strategic change within any organization

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Forms of Persuasion is the first book-length history of corporate art patronage in the 1960s. After the decline of artist-illustrated advertising but before the rise of museum sponsorship, this decade saw artists and businesses exploring new ways to use art for commercial gain. Where many art historical accounts of the sixties privilege radical artistic practices that seem to oppose the dominant values of capitalism, Alex J. Taylor instead reveals an art world deeply immersed in the imperatives of big business. These projects unfolded in Madison Avenue meeting rooms and MoMA galleries, but as the most creative and competitive corporations sought growth through global expansion, they also reached markets all around the world. From Andy Warhol's commissions for packaged goods manufacturers to Richard Serra's work with the steel industry, Taylor demonstrates how major artists of the period provided brands with "forms of persuasion" that bolstered corporate power, prestige, and profit. Drawing on extensive original research conducted in artist, gallery, and corporate archives, Taylor recovers a flourishing field of promotional initiatives that saw artists, advertising creatives, and executives working around the same tables. As museums continue to grapple with the ethical dilemmas posed by funding from oil companies, military suppliers, and drug manufacturers, Forms of Persuasion returns to these earlier relations between artists and multinational corporations to examine the complex aesthetic and ideological terms of their enduring entanglements"--

Book Corporate Identity Design

Download or read book Corporate Identity Design written by Veronica Napoles and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1991-01-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a market cluttered with big and small companies competing for the consumer's attention, public image becomes more critical than ever to the success of any business. Veronica Napoles's Corporate Identity Design provides a practical tool for designing and implementing a successful, comprehensive corporate identity program. It is an invaluable resource, since fashioning a powerful and accessible identity is a company's best bet for capturing the attention of consumers. Napoles explains the difference between corporate image--how a company is actually perceived by the public--and identity--how it wants to be perceived--and shows how to close the gap between the two. In doing so, she goes beyond previous books on the subject and anticipates the needs of consumers by incorporating elements of behavioral psychology into the design process. Corporate Identity Design is not merely a picture book or an anthology of symbols, but a comprehensive, detailed examination of all factors that lead to the choice and refinement of a corporate identity. Napoles's concise, step-by-step overview looks at all phases of the corporate identity design process, including: * recognizing the need for corporate identity adjustment * selecting a basic symbol category from which to choose * deciding on and refining a chosen symbol * implementing a careful, intelligent program for phasing in the new corporate identity and ensuring its acceptance by the public. The book includes dozens of helpful illustrations, a sample design proposal, questionnnaires, design briefs, and a color chart. In addition, Napoles provides guidelines for changing a company name, including information on basic name categories and the categories and the creative process for developing and evaluating names. These and other features make Corporate Identity Design the definitive work for establishing quick and accurate image/identity relationships in the mind of the public. Design students and professionals, public relations and communications officers, and top-level management personnel will all find Corporate Identity Design a continuing resource for ideas, information, and inspiration.
