Book Corporate Acquisition Strategies and Economic Performance A Case of Slovenia

Download or read book Corporate Acquisition Strategies and Economic Performance A Case of Slovenia written by Matej Lahovnik and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to examine the factors that influenced the performance of acquisitions in Slovenia. The empirical research methodology is based on qualitative part (interviews by using questionnaire) and quantitative part (descriptive statistics, correlation, regression model). In the methodology subjective approach (performance perceived by managers) is combined with more objective criteria. The performance of an acquisition is measured by comparing the acquisition's motives with its outcomes. The acquisitions were divided into three types: horizontal, vertical and conglomerate. The result of this research implicates that the so-called strategic and organizational fit between companies involved in M&A play an important role in improving the operational performance of the acquired companies in the post-acquisition period. Successful acquirers not only had a background in detecting below-average or less than full potential performance, but they also had some skills and competencies to improve the performance of an acquired firm. The results of our study suggest the conclusion that increasing relatedness - especially with regard to certain competencies and skills - between companies involved in an acquisition increases the chances of success.

Book Macroeconomic Imbalances

Download or read book Macroeconomic Imbalances written by European Commission. Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 14 February 2012, the European Commission presented its first Alert Mechanism Report (AMR), prepared in accordance with Article 3 of Regulation (EU) No 1176/2011 on the prevention and correction of macroeconomic imbalances. The AMR serves as an initial screening device, helping to identify Member States that warrant further in-depth analysis to determine whether imbalances exist or risk emerging. According to Article 5 of Regulation No. 1176/2011, these country-specific ?in-depth reviews? should examine the nature, origin and severity of macroeconomic developments in the Member State concerned which constitute, or could lead to, imbalances. On the basis of this analysis, the Commission will establish whether it considers that an imbalance exists and what type of policy follow-up it will recommend to the Council. For Slovenia, the AMR noted that two indicators in the scoreboard exceeded their thresholds in 2010 and suggested the need to assess the development and drivers of potential imbalances. The AMR explained that in the years before the crisis, Slovenia enjoyed strong growth and domestic demand conditions, coupled with some losses in price competitiveness and a gradual widening of the current account deficit. It identified signs that overheating occurred, particularly as regards private sector credit growth, construction value added and property prices. The Slovenian economy was hit hard by the global crisis and the AMR noted that this has brought some, perhaps temporary, adjustment in the external balance but this is still at an early stage. Against this background, Section 2 examines the external and internal dimensions of imbalances including developments in competitiveness, private sector indebtedness and in asset markets. This is followed by a closer look at the implications of indebtedness of non-financial corporations for the banking sector in Section 3. Section 4 presents possible policy considerations.

Book Innovation Systems in Small Catching Up Economies

Download or read book Innovation Systems in Small Catching Up Economies written by Elias G. Carayannis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-13 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In several parts of the world, countries are undergoing economic, social, and political transitions, enhanced and accelerated by the forces of globalization. These transition economies can serve as laboratories for understanding the innovation process. This volume features original theoretical and empirical research. It offers the first comprehensive view of innovation system development in the context of small catching-up economies. Smallness, path dependency, and latecomer status of such economies create some inherent limitations for their innovation systems, but these special characteristics can offer advantages as well. For example, smallness is often related with increased flexibility and shorter reaction times, while latecomers can benefit from earlier experiences of their more advanced neighbors. Path-dependency highlights the fact that the innovation system development processes are considerably influenced by the past experience of a particular country or region. By incorporating these features into an integrated analysis, the authors address such questions as: · What special features characterize the innovation system development in small catching-up economies? · What are the causes for innovation success or failure? · How do organizational capabilities and internationalization tendencies relate to company level innovations? · What is the role of human capital and social factors in the innovation process? · How can various policies support innovation in an integrated manner? Drawing from research about Europe, Asia, and Latin America, the authors provide readers with a systemic view of the innovation system development in small catching-up economies. They discuss the unique features of this development and contribute to an in-depth understanding of various determinants and their impacts on the innovation process. The policy implications will offer a set of normative guidelines for enhancing innovation system development.

Book Strategic Alliances Mergers and Acquisitions

Download or read book Strategic Alliances Mergers and Acquisitions written by J. M. Ulijn and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizational flirts and marriages alliances, mergers and acquisitions are dramatic examples of how soft cultures can produce hard facts of success or failure. Decisions born from human vanity can lead to destruction of human capital. The chapters selected by Ulijn, Duysters and Meijer illustrate the many facets of organizational family life for the scholar and, hopefully, for the decision-maker who considers another move. Geert Hofstede, author of Culture s Consequences This unique book focuses on the link between different types of culture (national, corporate, professional) and the success of strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions. Over the past decades we have seen a significant increase in the number of strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions. Despite this proliferation many recent studies have reported high failure rates. This failure is often attributed to cultural differences between partners, which has led to a growing body of literature on the subject. To date, most of these studies have focused on national and corporate culture, whereas this book also places particular emphasis on the importance of culture at the professional level. The authors clearly show that all three levels of culture may have a profound impact upon the ultimate success or failure of alliances, mergers and acquisitions. Researchers in the field of international business, strategic management, and strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions will find this book to be of invaluable interest. Managers in multinational corporations and international business students should also not be without this important resource.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enterprise Restructuring and Foreign Investment in the Transforming East: The Impact of Privatization explores the dynamic interrelationships between enterprise restructuring and foreign investment in transition economies of postcommunist countries, especially those of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). This important book offers investors and international businesses a continuum from theory to praxis as it discusses theoretical and methodological issues and empirical and practical implications of economic relationships to show how these interrelationships manifest themselves in prevailing trends, policy tradeoffs, and business strategies. Contending that the transformation to a state-owned enterprise to a capitalistic corporation involves more than reacting to economic incentives, Enterprise Restructuring and Foreign Investment in the Transforming East examines why enterprises need access to capital markets, finance investments, and acquire new capabilities in order to successfully compete in a market economy. Some of the strategies you will find that relate to common elements of the restructuring process include: a shift to a less hierarchal organization structure the adoption of Western financial management and accounting practices the introduction of stricter budget constraints the evolution of the marketing function and the rationalization of product ranges according to market needs Informative and intelligent, this book offers you a firsthand look at the complex and critical topic of restructuring as it relates to the realization of benefits of privatization at both the micro and macro levels. Using a case study approach, Enterprise Restructuring and Foreign Investment in the Transforming East gives you in-depth knowledge of the actual empirical/practical processes as they have been experienced in transition economies.

Book The Role of Universities in the Europe 2020 Strategy

Download or read book The Role of Universities in the Europe 2020 Strategy written by Alessandra Ricciardelli and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a unique study of the role of universities, as organisation systems, in the pursuit of the Europe 2020 strategy. While Europe 2020 focuses on creating the basis for the advancement and cohesion of the EU’s member states, it also has an important role in influencing the development strategies for potential candidate states. In this regard, the book examines two new member states – Slovenia and Croatia – and two potential EU candidate states – Serbia and Kosovo – in the Western Balkans. Based on these cases, the author argues that the operationalization of the Europe 2020 strategy depends to a great extent of the role and contribution of tertiary organisations such as educational institutions, i.e. public and private universities, and therefore requires the formulation of an economic development strategy at the national level that is capable of duly allocating the available financial resources. The study suggests that the paradigm shift represented by Europe 2020 has helped to forge a new academic identity, adding to the relevance of university organisations as fundamental agents for the promotion of economic development; in addition, it shows that an intensive learning process involving major structural changes is underway in the four countries discussed, as well as many other EU member states.
