Book The Perceptions of Educators about Corporal Punishment in Rural School Districts in Tennessee

Download or read book The Perceptions of Educators about Corporal Punishment in Rural School Districts in Tennessee written by Danielle D. Judkins and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to examine the perceptions of teachers, based on their demographics, regarding the use of corporal punishment in two rural Tennessee school districts. The research was designed to determine the differences between the teachers' beliefs of the use of corporal punishment based on years of teaching experience, use of corporal punishment, punishment received as a child, terminal degree, gender, age, teaching level, and two school systems' board policies. These variables were compared to the teachers' religious, cultural, legal, and discipline effectiveness beliefs. Two counties, DeKalb and Roane, were selected due to their similar demographics. The sample group consisted of 353 participants who completed Kiernan's Corporal Punishment Scale Survey. Eight hypotheses were tested using a Multiple Linear Regression and Multiple Analyses of Variance (MANOVAs). Five of the eight hypotheses were found to be statistically significant at the .01 level of significance. There were no significant differences in teachers' religious perceptions of corporal punishment based on the variables tested. A significant difference was found in teachers' cultural perceptions of corporal punishment based on the teaching level. Significant differences were found on the legal construct based on the teachers' use of corporal punishment, punishment received as a child, gender, teaching level, and school system board policies. There were significant differences in teachers' discipline effectiveness perceptions of corporal punishment based on teachers' use of corporal punishment and punishment received as a child. The legal construct was the area that was most affected by the teachers' demographic variables. Recommendations concluded from this study include the education of teachers in alternative measures other than corporal punishment and the re-evaluation of state laws and school board policies. Research recommendations include a correlational study between discipline records and infractions compared to corporal punishment and a comparison of the attitudes of teachers' in the Southern states with other regions of the United States.

Book Corporal Punishment of Children in Theoretical Perspective

Download or read book Corporal Punishment of Children in Theoretical Perspective written by Michael Donnelly and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: divDespite being commonplace in American households a generation ago, corporal punishment of children has been subjected to criticism and shifting attitudes in recent years. Many school districts have banned it, and many child advocates recommend that parents no longer spank or strike their children. In this book, social theorist Michael Donnelly and family violence expert Murray A. Straus tap the expertise of social science scholars and researchers who address issues of corporal punishment, a subject that is now characterized as a key issue in child welfare. The contributors discuss corporal punishment, its use, causes, and consequences, drawing on a wide array of comparative, psychological, and sociological theories. Together, they clarify the analytical issues and lay a strong foundation for future research and interdisciplinary collaboration. /DIV

Book The American School Discipline Debate and the Persistence of Corporal Punishment in Southern Public Schools

Download or read book The American School Discipline Debate and the Persistence of Corporal Punishment in Southern Public Schools written by David M. Hargrove and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dissertation examines the history of American school discipline and corporal punishment in southern public schools. Pedagogical literature, court reports, and popular fiction show that school discipline was a controversial topic throughout American history. The conflict over corporal punishment in schools led to a 1976 Supreme Court decision, Ingraham v. Wright, affirming the power of educators to use corporal punishment. When the school discipline debate peaked late in the twentieth century, most American schools no longer used corporal punishment but southern educators continued to paddle students, especially African American school children. By the twenty-first century, southern city schools adopted non-violent forms of discipline but paddling persisted in rural southern schools, reinforcing images of the South as a violent region.

Book Corporal Punishment Religion and United States Public Schools

Download or read book Corporal Punishment Religion and United States Public Schools written by Jane Hall Fitz-Gibbon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines corporal punishment in United States public schools. The practice—which is still legal in nineteen states—affects approximately a quarter million children each year. Justification for the use of physical punishment is often based on religious texts. Rather than simply disregarding the importance of religious commitment, this volume presents an alternative faith-based response. The book suggests the “hermeneutical triad,” of sacred text, tradition, and reason as an acceptable approach for those seeking to be faithful to religious text and tradition.
